I put butter in the fridge, DH wants it on the counter. Who is right?

We don’t have a huge kitchen so it will always be at least 1 mt away from hob or window. Would a butter dish “protect” it enough from it? I have always assumed butter goes in the fridge but he says it doesn’t. What do others do?

Butter dish on side.
Actually mine lives in the dining table with salt pepper and vinegar!

HornungTheHelpful · 21/01/2025 20:42

Real butter shouldn’t go in the fridge.

NewNameFor2025 · 21/01/2025 20:43

Out of the fridge.

Comefromaway · 21/01/2025 20:43

You can’t spread butter straight from the fridge. It needs to be out a couple of hours before you use it.

a compromise is to keep it in the fridge but keep a small piece covered on the counter.

CagneyNYPD1 · 21/01/2025 20:43

Butter in a closed butter dish on the counter. Spreadable (i.e. Lurpak) in the fridge.

NoSoupForU · 21/01/2025 20:43

On the side in a butter dish.

WithASpider · 21/01/2025 20:43

On the counter unless it's a hot day. It's impossible to spread otherwise!

Pieandchips999 · 21/01/2025 20:43

In the winter butter dish is perfect. It can get a bit runny on a real not summers day but it still doesn't spread from the fridge. That's why butter dishes were invented

coxesorangepippin · 21/01/2025 20:43

Depends on the temperature of the kitchen

Newbie8918 · 21/01/2025 20:44

We always argue about where ketchup, eggs and chocolate goes 🤣.

My usual argument is 'where do you find it in the supermarket?'

For me.......butter=fridge (sorry) 🤣

Unrulyrabbit · 21/01/2025 20:44

Cut it in half, put half in each place, both happy

Autther · 21/01/2025 20:44

On the counter unless it's very warm

Renovationhell · 21/01/2025 20:44

Always in the fridge for me! Leaving it out feels gross, no idea why though.

Coriol · 21/01/2025 20:44

What is it for? I always have a small amount of butter on the counter in a butter dish so that it’s soft enough for toast or sandwiches, but will keep a block in the fridge, taking it out if I need it softened for baking.

KrisAkabusi · 21/01/2025 20:44

Not in the fridge. You can't spread it.

Advent0range · 21/01/2025 20:45

DH is right.

Fleetheart · 21/01/2025 20:45

definitely not in the fridge this time of year. maybe if it gets very hot in the summer

TwinklyPearlPoster · 21/01/2025 20:46

In my fantasy it would sit on a marble shelf in a pantry like Nigella has.

However in my reality it sits in a fridge and when I need some I cut a bit of and the microwave for 30s to soften so it can be spread on a muffin etc …

Also I when I open a new packet I cube and freeze for baking later

SpookyAllSeasons · 21/01/2025 20:46

Definitely on the side!

CremeEggThief · 21/01/2025 20:46

Butter in the fridge especially in this weather?!🤪

persisted · 21/01/2025 20:47

On the side. Apart from the few very hot days in the summer, even then it comes out of the fridge for the whole evening

Newbie8918 · 21/01/2025 20:47

KrisAkabusi · 21/01/2025 20:44

Not in the fridge. You can't spread it.

Does the argument change if it's spreadable? 🤣

marshmallowfinder · 21/01/2025 20:48

Some on the side always, but remainder of block in fridge.

sammyspoon · 21/01/2025 20:48

Always on the counter in a butter dish. Depending on how quickly you get through it, adjust the amount you keep in there.

No! There’s loads of stuff that can be sealed so is ok in the supermarket but once opened is not ok - mayonnaise anyone? 😳
