I put butter in the fridge, DH wants it on the counter. Who is right?

We don’t have a huge kitchen so it will always be at least 1 mt away from hob or window. Would a butter dish “protect” it enough from it? I have always assumed butter goes in the fridge but he says it doesn’t. What do others do?

@cardibach we'll agree to disagree on spreadable not being real butter.

I'm talking about spreadable butter and not sun flour spread with additional oil etc.

My understanding is the ingredients of spreadable is the same and it's the production process which is slightly different.

Real butter, in a butter dish, out of the fridge- DH was quick to correct me when we first moved in together (I had always had margarine).

User67556 · 21/01/2025 21:00

In one of these on the kitchen worktop. Keeps it cool and protected. We only put it in the fridge when the weather is (rarely) over 30 degrees.

It’s not butter.

On the side, obviously. Otherwise you can't spread it.

Although in summer if it's particularly warm I cut it in half, keep one half in the fridge for later and one in the dish

Negroany · 21/01/2025 21:00

I keep it in the butter dish, on the counter. I keep one spare in the fridge and a few spare in the freezer.

If it's really hot, I only put half a pack in the dish at a time because it can go a bit rancid at the edges.

My butter dish is pottery with a wooden lid.

Out of fridge

Newbie8918 · 21/01/2025 21:02

@cardibach because you're looking at their sunflower spread. Anchor doesn't make spreadable butter currently.

The butter that is currently being used is in a butter dish and the other butters are in the fridge. We get through a lot of butter.

HeffalumpsAndWoozlesAreHoneyRobbingTwats · 21/01/2025 21:03

Buy a Le Creuset butter dish and a decent block of Lurpak (salted). Cut in half, delicately place one half in the butter dish and the other half in a quality dish that can be placed in a fridge.

Draground · 21/01/2025 21:03

Well we have butter only for baking or cooking so I keep it in the fridge for longevity. If I needed it to be spreadable I would take a slice of it and put it in the butter dish each evening.

gidsquame · 21/01/2025 21:03

DH and I had a petty “battle” about this for a couple of years (lighthearted…). In the end I decided to use it as a bargaining chip - it could stay on the counter as long as the toilet lid was left down after use. When he forgot, I put the butter back in the fridge. He soon got tired of this and now the toilet lids stays down. Butter on counter has grown on me I have to say - it’s always ready to spread and as our kitchen is overlooked, it’s never too runny in summer.

I’m not bi googled for spreadable butter, not specifically anchor. I’d suggest they aren’t making one because it’s not possible to without adding stuff - or everyone would.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 21/01/2025 21:04

On the counter in a butter dish for us too. In the summer when it’s too hot, I usually buy a tub of spreadable which I’m not particularly keen on, but it does. We always have some spare blocks in the fridge too.

Marine30 · 21/01/2025 21:04

On the counter-top, although this week it may as well have been the fridge 🥶

Tautumnal · 21/01/2025 21:04

Out of the fridge. Ditto spreadable butter if we ever buy it. Unless it's extremely hot weather.

gidsquame · 21/01/2025 21:05

However we only use one of those plastic containers with a lid - our cat had figured out how to push even a very heavy butter dish lid aside 🤢

sammyspoon · 21/01/2025 21:05

While we're at it, eggs don't need to be in the fridge. They can be in a pretty egg basket.

Spreadable is shite, but if you buy it it should stay in the fridge. It’s only reason for existing is that it spreads direct from the fridge.

ManyATrueWord · 21/01/2025 21:06

Salted butter I have out in an insulated butter dish. It's hardly ever soft enough except in the middle of summer. Only one pack at a time. The rest are in the fridge.

The one we use. Lidl also do one. No added oils. But get what you're saying. I can't bare sunflower oil or similar spreads.

Cut it in half, put half in each place, both happy

^ this. I keep about 1/3 block in a covered ramekin on counter, rest in fridge

Butter in a closed butter dish on the counter. Spreadable (i.e. Lurpak) in the fridge.

This.
