I put butter in the fridge, DH wants it on the counter. Who is right?

We don’t have a huge kitchen so it will always be at least 1 mt away from hob or window. Would a butter dish “protect” it enough from it? I have always assumed butter goes in the fridge but he says it doesn’t. What do others do?

I get through butter slowly so mine lives in the fridge, and I just get out what I need in advance of using it.

LakieLady · 21/01/2025 20:48

On the side for spreadability.

A heavy earthenware butter dish will stop it from getting too warm in summer.

Lallybroch · 21/01/2025 20:48

Definitely not in the fridge unless it is the middle of summer BUT, I don't like the idea of it sitting on the work top, so my butter dish lives in the microwave until either the butter or the microwave is needed. That way I don't get the ick feeling.

oharibo · 21/01/2025 20:48

Real butter definitely not in the fridge!

Pretend butter like lurpak needs to stay in the fridge as it's almost 50% oil

PurpleFlower1983 · 21/01/2025 20:49

Real butter shouldn’t be in the fridge.

Spreadable in the fridge is ok I think!

Floralnomad · 21/01/2025 20:49

Proper butter in a butter dish on the side , spreadable butter in the fridge .

Newbie8918 · 21/01/2025 20:47

Does the argument change if it's spreadable? 🤣

Yes. Spreadable butter isn't butter.

Comefromaway · 21/01/2025 20:43

You can’t spread butter straight from the fridge. It needs to be out a couple of hours before you use it.

a compromise is to keep it in the fridge but keep a small piece covered on the counter.

But you can slice it! My mum keeps hers in the freezer 😂.

CrushingOnRubies · 21/01/2025 20:50

Heated butter dish on side.

Jemimapuddleduk · 21/01/2025 20:51

Butter for cooking in fridge, butter for spreading in sandwiches/bread/toast in a butter dish on side.

Doggymummar · 21/01/2025 20:51

I keep it on the side ina butter dish, unless it gets warm ( unlikely in the UK)

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 21/01/2025 20:51

Butter in a butter dish on the worktop and olive spread in the fridge.

TherealmrsT · 21/01/2025 20:51

Temperature controlled butter dish. I bought it as a bit of a joke for DH for Christmas a couple of years ago but we both agree that if it breaks we will get a new one.

We always argue about where ketchup, eggs and chocolate goes 🤣.

My usual argument is 'where do you find it in the supermarket?'

For me.......butter=fridge (sorry) 🤣

People in the supermarket aren’t trying to spread it.

Heated butter dish on side.

Sorry WHAT?!
I’m off to google.

(butter not in fridge here unless it’s so hot it’s melting)

BarbaraHoward · 21/01/2025 20:52

Definitely out assuming it's proper butter, but it must be given you've mentioned a dish. Ours sits much closer than 1m to the hob and is fine.

Butter in the fridge especially in this weather?!🤪

Especially in the cold? Why?

Pigeonqueen · 21/01/2025 20:53

I like my butter cut in thick little slices on top of hot toast, by the time I’ve put the little slices on across two slices they’re spreadable. I like my butter in the fridge.

Spreadable isn’t butter. It goes in the fridge (but not my fridge - vile stuff) because it’s been messed about with unnecessarily to make it spread from the fridge. Butter is fine on the side.

Saschka · 21/01/2025 20:54

Spreadable butter is better in the fridge because it lasts longer. Non-spreadable (normal) butter is better on the counter be side it is rock solid otherwise, but the downside is that it will go rancid quicker. A compromise might be to leave a small portion out in a butter dish to use and the rest in the fridge until needed.

MixedFamily · 21/01/2025 20:56

I don’t know why it never even crossed my mind to cut it and keep half of it in and half of it out, lol. Think I will start doing so and it will give me the excuse to buy a pretty butter dish

Ponderingwindow · 21/01/2025 20:56

We keep some in both.

if it is warm and you are nervous, you can use a butter bell, but honestly I have never had a problem just in a covered dish.

Magnalux · 21/01/2025 20:56

two butters, one in the cupboard one in the fridge

TwistedWonder · 21/01/2025 20:57

Always fridge for me and just take a portion out when you need it

wassailess · 21/01/2025 20:58

Our butter for using lives in a little house with a hat on the side.

Until there's space in the house it lives in the fridge. When the house with the hat needs filling in waits in the fridge.

Butter for toast and bread - outside of fridge. Apart from melty summer, then the butter house goes in the fridge again overnight at over 25C.
