I put butter in the fridge, DH wants it on the counter. Who is right?

We don’t have a huge kitchen so it will always be at least 1 mt away from hob or window. Would a butter dish “protect” it enough from it? I have always assumed butter goes in the fridge but he says it doesn’t. What do others do?

Based on its price Lurpak should be in the safe

Dogstar78 · 21/01/2025 21:14

We use a French butter pot. I like to think I am fancy 😁

Is putting it on the counter an English thing because I’m Scottish and I don’t know anybody keeping it on the counter.

I'm scottish and my butter is kept on the worktop in a butter dish. It's still solid when I try to spread it on my toast at this time of year!

Cut it in half, put half in each place, both happy

Same here, I have two tuppawear dishes, one for fridge butter, one for counter butter.

Fridge, with the caveat that I only use it for cooking. I don't like how the outside goes all yellow when left out. I use spreadable butter for bread.

My butter has never gone yellow. Did you keep it in a butter dish?

Butter in the fridge! It can become bad and rancid if not 🤢..

Never happened here. I live alone and don’t use a huge amount

Anyotherdude · 21/01/2025 21:16

Depends if it’s salted or not… salted butter should be kept at a normal room temperature (so not in the kitchen) in a covered butter dish. As PP have said - put half the block there and the other half in the fridge if you prefer it cold…
Unsalted butter, on the other hand, will spoil quicker at room temperature, so if the butter is going to be used up quickly, it’s ok to leave it out for a day.

UneFoisAuChalet · 21/01/2025 21:16

I have a butter dish in the cupboard with other condiments - oil, salt, pepper, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce etc…We hate food items on the worktop so this works best for us.

Goodkingcharles · 21/01/2025 21:16

On the counter unless it’s unspeakably hot, when my mum used to come over to watch my son while I went to work she’d always clean my kitchen for me while he napped (a godsend of a woman!) but every time without fail I’d come home and find the butter hidden in the fridge, like I was just a total idiot that would consistently forget to put it away every day. I don’t see how even spreadable butter is usable when it’s been in the fridge without a couple of hours to warm up a tad!

Some on the side always, but remainder of block in fridge.

Same. I don't like it sitting out long before it is eaten.

Millyjanice · 21/01/2025 21:17

No one is right. It depends on personal preference. I like my butter cold. Some people like it soft and easier to spread.

You get his and hers butters. Then it’s not an issue.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 21/01/2025 21:17

Depends on weather. In fridge in the summer but counter in winter unless it’s an easy spreadable one in which case it can always be in the fridge

This is true. If it’s a preference, great. If it isn’t and is about the fear of it going off, that’s a bit daft.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 21/01/2025 21:18

Mines in a butter dish in a cupboard, i cut a chunk off the block, the rest lives in the fridge until the butter dish runs low.
If anyone has any butter dish recommendations?? Mine got dropped and glued back together so could use a new one

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/01/2025 21:19

I have a small covered pot. I keep butter in the fridge and slice some off to keep in the cupboard. I don't get through a lot of butter so I have to keep it in the fridge so it doesn't go off. It's much easier to portion as I need.

Sorry WHAT?!
I’m off to google.

(butter not in fridge here unless it’s so hot it’s melting)

its off in the summer but means it’s always soft in winter, even in our cold kitchen

In a butter dish unless peak summer (you know that two weeks in late June when we all get hopeful, only to be disappointed very soon after!)

Newbie8918 · 21/01/2025 20:47

Does the argument change if it's spreadable? 🤣

Well, it isn't butter if it's a spreadable. It's a spread that may or may not contain butter so I would imaging you would need to keep that in the fridge.

Caerulea · 21/01/2025 21:24

My cat prefers the butter to be left on the side.

ruethewhirl · 21/01/2025 21:24

I'm with your DH OP. It's so annoying when the butter is so hard it rips holes in the bread.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 21/01/2025 21:25

Get a big block of butter. Cut smaller pieces off it and keep them in the butter dish on the side, keep the main block in the fridge.

Cheeseandapplechutney · 21/01/2025 21:25

I agree with DH. You can’t spread real butter from the fridge.

Cinnamonrollsforbreakfast · 21/01/2025 21:25

Half in fridge. Half out. Unless you eat a lot of butter and then leave the whole thing out.

Guineapiggywiggy · 21/01/2025 21:26

Newbie8918 · 21/01/2025 20:47

Does the argument change if it's spreadable? 🤣

Yes. Then it’s not butter, it’s a mix of other fats.

rainbowunicorn · 21/01/2025 21:27

oharibo · 21/01/2025 20:48

Real butter definitely not in the fridge!

Pretend butter like lurpak needs to stay in the fridge as it's almost 50% oil

Not all lurpak is spreadable though. Not sure why people think that it is. Lurpak comes in block form as well.
