I put butter in the fridge, DH wants it on the counter. Who is right?

We don’t have a huge kitchen so it will always be at least 1 mt away from hob or window. Would a butter dish “protect” it enough from it? I have always assumed butter goes in the fridge but he says it doesn’t. What do others do?

On the side. Mind you, it's so cold in my kitchen that things I take out of the freezer don't defrost. And the olive oil was practically solid earlier

HarryMcGraw · 22/01/2025 22:45

a LOT of posts on this, can’t read them all, but definitely not in the fridge. Take out enough for a day or two and it’s lovely from the butter dish. We need a poll!

To add- I would, though, probably rather go to the inconvenience of getting a slab from the fridge to put in the bowl every morning, or even twice a day, than have the whole packet out. Very unappealing! For aesthetic reasons I suppose. Mind you, when I’m spreading it easily and eating it happily, even that aesthetic consideration is like eaten bread - soon forgotten.

On the counter.

The notable exception for spreadable/softer butter is kerrygold. Dunno how they do it, but it’s just butter, no added oils

It still has a weird slimy texture though. Just have real butter out on the side. It doesn’t go rancid before you can eat it (I live alone and don’t even use butter every day and I have no problems).

The le crueset ones are great.

Yes, we use a little Le Creuset pot with a lid as a butter dish. We keep the pack of butter in the fridge, and cut enough for the butter dish to last a couple of days.

SnozPoz · 23/01/2025 04:09

It depends where you live. In a cooler climate like the UK definitely small amounts in a butter dish out of the fridge is the way to go. In hotter climates it will go sour quickly out of the fridge so unfortunately probably needs to be mainly in the fridge, (taken out an hour before use if possible)

Glitterblue · 23/01/2025 04:47

Real butter can be in a butter dish in the kitchen, things like Lurpak in the fridge.

Could you compromise and keep a little bit out, enough for the day, and the rest in the fridge? It doesn’t spread from the fridge.

Your husband I am afraid… lol

Second that.

Definitely on the counter! How are you spreading hard butter.. Im cringing at the thought 🤣

To save space you cpuld have a little dish with a little butter in that you bith constantly top up?

GentlyAnarchistic · 23/01/2025 08:11

He is. I use a thick Cornishware one.

Oh I do have real butter. Not bought anything other than real butter for years.
after my mum fed us vitalite and flora for our entire childhoods 😬

TheGoogleMum · 23/01/2025 08:21

It won't be spreadable from the fridge, a pain when you're making a sandwich

Streetsofkenny · 23/01/2025 09:15

We keep butter in a butter dish on the worktop. Even then, in the winter it's difficult enough to spread - it would be 10x worse if kept in the fridge!!

Problemzapper · 23/01/2025 09:22

I keep butter in a very pretty butter dish on the dining table, along with the salt and pepper pots, so it's kept at room temperature so easy to spread.

However, in really hot summer i sometimes stick the whole dish in the fridge for a while to stop it melting altogether.

ForeverinBJ · 23/01/2025 09:23

Real butter in a butter dish (mine lives next to the bread in a cupboard
Marj in fridge (but not in my house)

Butter is unspreadable in the fridge. I wouldn't even contemplate putting it in there.

CJsGoldfish · 23/01/2025 10:45

French butter pot.
Seals the butter in so it stays fresh as well as soft.

WeWillGetThereInTheEnd · 23/01/2025 11:02

We only have real butter and keep it in the butter dish in the cupboard - so the cats don’t knock the lid off, and lick the butter! (A never ending obsession of theirs) We always use it up, before it goes off!

I keep one block in the freezer and another in the fridge, as back ups. The one in the fridge is for baking, which needs cold butter.

The only time, we put the butter dish in the fridge, is when we go on holiday for 2 weeks in the summer!

Hmm1234 · 23/01/2025 11:07

How long does butter out of the fridge last?? What if your kitchen is too warm??

Ages. Even in summer. I live alone. I don’t eat a lot of butter. I have never had a block go rancid. It’s to do with the molecular structure apparently. Remember butter is essentially a way of preserving milk.

WeWillGetThereInTheEnd · 23/01/2025 14:12

Ours doesn’t last 2 weeks; and it’s never gone rancid, regardless of how warm the kitchen is!

ellyeth · 23/01/2025 16:43

In the fridge until opened, then in a butter dish on the counter - except when it is very hot.

Sukhareva · 23/01/2025 20:07

And tomatoes and cheese.

Tomatoes should never be put in the fridge!!
