What food from Waitrose do I need to try?

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 21/01/2025 00:00

I've never shopped at waitrose, apart from popping in for an emergency water bottle, kind of thing. I'm an Asda/Lidl budget shopper 🤭

I've got a voucher to use there for an online shop, £15 off of an £80 shop.

So which food would you recommend i buy? Which food tastes amazing and is a must try? I'm thinking of venison, never had that

Is the pasta superior? Any seasonings?

They are surprisingly good value and the quality of fruit and veg in particular is much better than other supermarkets.

I love their Duchy cream cheese!

ThePoliteLion · 21/01/2025 20:52

I love an occasional Waitrose shop! First I’d go to the fresh fish and meat counter. Then the cheese selection is brilliant. In the frozen food section, I’d zoom in on the raspberry tart and profiteroles. I’m fond of my local Tesco, it’s fine for basics and the staff are very nice, but the food in Waitrose is much better IMO.

twiddleit · 21/01/2025 20:54

Their economy shortcake and malted milk biscuits are the best I have found. We make a special trip just to buy them.

tobee · 21/01/2025 20:54

Oh yeah i may be a lazy bastard but their pre peeled garlic cloves are brilliant if you need lots and the white papery skinned ones are a pain in the arse otherwise

OnTheBoardwalk · 21/01/2025 20:54

I really missed Waitrose when they ended the Ocado franchise and was not happy when they went M&S. I loved Duchy Organic

since then I’ve noticed many branded goods have uped their game and are to the same standard via Ocado and Waitrose have stayed the same

go for all the Waitrose branded treats and you'll be ok. Watch out for substitutions though

NewNeolithic · 21/01/2025 20:55

Rough oatcakes, waitrose own brand. No palm oil and SOOOO much nicer than Nairns or other supermarket own brands. And not expensive. I stock up when I am occasionally there.

Postchristmasblah · 21/01/2025 20:55

They do a brisket in their Japanese range that is excellent in bao buns. Their keralan chicken fry in their Indian ready meal section is also good. Otherwise it’s just a shop where things are quite expensive. I rotate between sainsbos, Waitrose and Lidl but less shopping from Waitrose even though it is closest

dizzydizzydizzy · 21/01/2025 20:56

You go to Waitrose for niche foodie items or better quality.

I always buy bread there called Heart of Nature, which is really a load of seeds squashed together. It's expensive but delicious and good for my blood sugar.

I buy raspberries and blueberries in Waitrose- they're juicier and sweeter. In fact most of the fruit and veg in Waitrose is better quality .

Coffee beans. Tesco have very little offering and they're bad and expensive. Waitrose has a large range and they've often on offer.

Fancy olive oil. I eat a lot of salad and like a posh olive oil on it. Waitrose has a far better range than any other supermarket.

Not at ours, the quality of fruit and veg is v poor.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 21/01/2025 20:58

Bertinet bakery bread
Waitrose sticky banana loaf cake
No 1 Victoria sandwich
Fresh fruit and veg are very good quality and last well.
Huge watermelons really nice.
Grapes lovely and sweet and big.
Sea bass fillets
Waitrose ice cream is lush
Waitrose French salted butter
Burford Brown very large eggs (fantastic poached)
No. 1 Cornish cheddar
Best selection of Bonne Maman products if you like those

Enjoy your shopping.

“Waitrose has a far better range than any other supermarket.“

has it? Sainsburys has a massive shelf containing every brand including v posh that you could think of. Not sure Waitrose could have more and why more would be wanted.

I think other supermarkets have caught up. I do wonder if Waitrose is struggling. As I said at ours the fruit and veg isn’t great. Yellow old kale in bags, zero clementines or tangerines, not much choice of a lot of things and what there is is always going over and not very fresh. Christmas food was very underwhelming those year, very few checkouts….

Whyherewego · 21/01/2025 21:04

In my view the Waitrose essentials are good. So their meat and dairy is higher welfare as an example and I find their essential veg to be always decent quality.
But if you want more interesting options, their venison steaks are lovely fried (3 for £12 and they freeze well). In their 3 for £12 mest ranges their chiken tikka and their Jamaican jerk chicken is tasty. I agree re their own brand tea bags. Some of their desserts are very good too.i tend to just buy what's on offer

dappledgreyandwhite · 21/01/2025 21:06

I would be never shop anywhere else.

Waiteose has the best selection of cheese of any supermarket in my opinion, lots of varieties you don't get in any other supermarkets so I always stock up on that

It's also good for different types and cuts of meat (that you can get at butchers but not other supermarkets)

I really like their own brand chocolate especially the dark milk one.

They do a good own brand white chocolate ice cream. Their truffle saucisson is also good.

Otherwise they have good ingredients so if you have any recipes where you struggle to find ingredients outside specialist shops, it's worth looking for them

I've seen some of their ingredients that I've just never seen in Asda so I've put those on the list

Also trying some of their pasta sauces

I'm gonna try a few of these, especially the bread

There's a few no.1 items in my basket, I'm expecting to be blown away 🤭

It’s restaurant quality isn’t it.

I'm 8 months pregnant and I could eat it 12 times a day 😂.

MissBridgetJones · 21/01/2025 21:35

If you have a big Waitrose the spooning Gorgonzola is soo good. On the cheese counter.

Cheeseandapplechutney · 21/01/2025 21:39

Their almond croissants are the nicest. Their essential shower gels are good.

bostonchamps · 21/01/2025 21:39

My big shop is always Waitrose - where we are other supermarkets are shite for subs. Every now and then I do a basket comparison with Tesck and there's never usually more than a few pounds in it, but we don't buy brands or value range, usually own brand/luxury own brand.

Always always always get the no. 1 Greek yoghurt, prepeeled garlic, deli anchovies, no. 1 chocolate (I love the salted blonde and dark with orange ganache) and essentials bbq sauce. If you're doing a shop this week, the stock brined chicken is 1/3rd off and pork crackling joint is 1/2 price.

If you're interested in wine OP, they do a fab range called loved and found - lesser known varietals. They don't afaik currently carry a skin contact (orange) wine, but the treixaudra has a skinsy feel to it. £8.99 a bottle, which is super value for the quality you get - it's good with charcuterie or a meaty fish like tuna. The No. 1 Amontillado sherry is also great quality.

Excellent cheese deli counter.

Veg is top quality and the Essentials own brand is often better than than the branded equivalent.

Love the bakery too and the best commercially made Welsh Cakes!

Yes. The cheese.
