That picture of the Southport killer

That has been circulating today.

Remember that sweet boy that was in all the reports at the time? The one who looked about nine?

Can anyone think of any other serious criminal who has pictures of them as a child out in the press?

The photo that's been released now seems deliberately scary.

Newsflash for you - most mugshots are scary to a degree. There’s nothing deliberate about it.

TomatoSandwiches · 20/01/2025 17:36

We really need to focus on how MH issues that bring up for children and teenagers is assessed and treated. We currently have an appalling system that really just waits for people to time out of the age brackets and pass these people along until something tragic happens.

Tittat50 · 20/01/2025 17:36

I'd like to debate this case / story but focusing on the mugshot feels a bit daft.

JHound · 20/01/2025 17:36

Coldanddamp · 20/01/2025 17:34

@JHound I haven't said they didn't but are you saying it doesn't fuel the right?

Well everything is fuel to the hard of thinking. The other option was to share no photos and that would not have helped either.

PandoraSox · 20/01/2025 17:38

Trikey · 20/01/2025 17:29

I'm more concerned with who decided to have that trial today to hide it against the inauguration of Trump,
And what the Prime Minister and Home Secretary knew about this evil person, when they knew it and what they decided to tell the public.

What are you talking about?

What do you think they knew other than the terrible crimes he committed and the fact that there were red flags all over the place about this young man for a long time and the system failed to do anything?

If you want to politicise this and try to point the finger at PMs and Home Secretaries you should be pointing at the previous administrations under which the system failed to act.

The courts would have set the day btw.

Exactly. Mugshots are not exactly taken to flatter and not infrequently people have been having a rather rough time before they're taken. They almost invariably look some combination of crazed, vacant, dragged through a hedge, and dead behind the eyes. Even for people who look perfectly sane and well-groomed normally.

WettyBite · 20/01/2025 17:39

I find most mugshots alarming tbh.
The majority of the people in them look crazed.

Coldanddamp · 20/01/2025 17:39

Agree, he was referred to Prevent 3 times!!!

JandamiHash · 20/01/2025 17:40

YANBU, it’s disgusting that the focus at the time seemed to be on “Let’s make him out to be angelic”. And then it turns out after people had been imprisoned for “falsely” linking him to Islamic extremism, it turns it he was an Islamic extremist. Starmer is a joke, far more concerned by not upsetting people than protecting children

TomatoSandwiches · 20/01/2025 17:40

How far will it have to escalate until we as a society take MH issues seriously as in make changes to the systems in place?

How about when we start to prosecute parents as in certain states in America if your child kills someone with a knife/weapon?
When parents are investigated to see if they sought out psychiatric help for their dependants?

PandoraSox · 20/01/2025 17:40

Exactly.

Trying to spin this into some sort of conspiracy involving Starmer and Cooper is disgusting.

Trikey · 20/01/2025 17:40

Axel Rudakubana had been reported to Prevent three times. He was known to the authorities. The police will have known very quickly who had carried out this crime. That information will have been made known to the Home Secretary and Prime Minister within hours. They knew he was not a choirboy from Wales. The vacuum of information and misinformation led to the riots.

Coldanddamp · 20/01/2025 17:40

@JHound Personally I don't think people
should be labelled stupid. I don't think it's helps anything & think it's one reason we had Brexit.

This story highlights so many problems beyond immigrant status ( I know he was born here), and beyond race. The conditions he is suspected having ( not sure if diagnosed) are very relevant. The fact he was referred to PREVENT age 13 'but deemed not to meet the criteria despite evidence of concerning views and beliefs based in extreme Islam ideology. That's the problem for me.

Was it simply a resource deficit problem or akin to what others are concerned about ref the two tier approach. I don't know the answer. I'm not bothered about his photos.

You do you. I shall continue to refer to stupid people as stupid.

I don't think their is the appetite to pay more tax

Where are you reading he had “beliefs based in extreme islam ideology”?

"He used computers at the school he attended at the time to search for material on school massacres, it is understood."

The above & the fact he bought a knife to his school should have meant someone thought there was a risk

Let me go back and find the source. I wrote that and thought - can I trust the source I just read there! I could be talking shit - I will be back. 🙏

BallerinaRadio · 20/01/2025 17:46

It's scary the lengths some people will go to to try to stretch this into some of conspiracy.

Like 'innocently' asking whether there have been other photos of child killers 🙄

Treesinthewind · 20/01/2025 17:46

To cover up the fact that the Prevent referrals system had massively failed? I can't help but think he'd have been taken more seriously as a threat if he had been Muslim.

BobbyBiscuits · 20/01/2025 17:46

They found the most childlike looking picture to shock people. Now he's in court they're showing him looking like an axe murderer. To shock people. Like the fact it happened isn't shocking already enough?!
