Thanks all, been at work and just reading through all comments.

Dd is 6, she wrote this at home, could use own pen, paper etc, I just wanted to see her writing.

Her friend is called Gabriel

The picture is hers and all writing and spelling lm her own

To a Pp who commented about the bitten nails…it’s my hand 😂

So, I wanted to see how she compares to others, we live abroad, so doesn’t start formal learning until September.

I’ve read to her since she was a baby and taught her sounds etc when younger. She’s always known her letters, but writing is the one thing I’ve not actively taught her, as she will learn quite differently in September, when they teach it and I didn’t want to confuse. I’m thinking I should intervene a little and work on where to put capitals and where to use lower case and work on presentation? Should I or leave it to the teachers in September? She only writes her name and the copied date at school, she writes sometimes for fun at school.
Her reading age is 9.5, it’s just her writing, it’s poor in comparison to others in her age group, isn’t it?

I don’t think you need to worry about it if she’s not in school yet. She would be behind in the UK but we start kids far too early and I bet she will have caught up within a year of being in school. She looks to be doing great with her spellings for her age and her handwriting will come in no time. It’s lovely she’s enjoying writing and writing for fun- keep it fun.

It’s common for productive skills to come much later than receptive skills. She’s doing great. Don’t worry 😊

ThesebeautifulthingsthatIvegot · 20/01/2025 22:10

That makes perfect sense. If she's not started formal learning yet, she wouldn't know about "writing on the lines." She's doing well for 6 without formal phonics teaching if she can spell "beach" and a good approximation for "Gabriel." Letter formation is behind an "average" 6-year-old in UK schooling, which makes sense if she's not been taught it. Teach her if she's interested, but don't worry at all as she seems to have good pen control and will learn when taught at school.

This. Don't compare her to UK kids she will slot into the education system where you are. Our system isn't necessarily the best for kids even if they can write and read earlier.

Strictlymad · 20/01/2025 22:44

I’m a teacher and I’d say 6 is spot on - year 1/2. The replies saying nursery when she writes beach correctly and tricky words to and the are up a gum tree!

Oh well this makes a world of difference in my opinion.
If she hasn’t started formal learning yet then this is great for independent learning.
Letter formation starts as young as 4 in England (I thought the writing seemed that of a new learner).
If she loves reading, read with her and gently point out the capital letters at the beginning of each sentence and see if she can point some out on the next page.
You and LO are doing great x

What would you say about spelling and sentence structure, putting the handwriting aside?

It’s a lovely bit of writing, what’s written was obviously important to her!

Spellings - most of it you can tell what she’s writing as she’s using phonetically correct spellings.
Capital letters are randomly placed, punctuation is missing.

Saracen · 20/01/2025 23:42

I'm sure once she's at school and doing loads of writing, it will come on in leaps and bounds. One of my kids started school at nine, having been home educated up to that point with no requirement to write unless they wanted to. The speed and tidiness of their handwriting improved dramatically within a month of starting school, due to all the practice.

Like your daughter, mine was doing well in all other areas, so the slow handwriting alone didn't cause their self-esteem to suffer. So I don't think you necessarily need to work on it in advance to get her ready. She can work on it at school.

Should have read all your posts before replying!

Bilingual and not even formally in school yet - she’s done a cracking job!! And so have you teaching her!

If she wants to learn, I’d get her forming lower case letters correctly. There’s loads of fine motor skills games you can play as well to help with pencil grip.

These things will come, she hasnt even started school yet - it’s brilliant! 🤩

Dishwashersaurous · 21/01/2025 06:49

Don't worry about it, she will be taught properly, and pick it up quickly, when she gets to school.

The different education systems make it hard to compare which is why people are saying reception because in England formal writing is taught early.

However, if she's never been taught then this is fine and she'll pick it up.

Really focus in encouraging drawing and small motor skills rather than specifically writing.

Always have pencils and paper available so she can draw.

LittleScampi · 21/01/2025 07:10

We‘re also abroad, DS was just shy of 7 when he started school and started to learn reading and writing (his school language is not English).

Please, stop comparing your child to UK children! It’s a completely different learning process. And definitely leave it up to the teachers- anything you teach your child now might have to be unlearned. For example, letters and numbers might be formed differently. DS is now in Year 2 of school and they are only just learning to capitalise and use full stops.

I teach at secondary level here, all the children are fluent in at least 3 languages and can all write beautifully! So don’t worry, your child is probably miles ahead of her future classmates.

PC7102 · 21/01/2025 17:52

year 1 or 2? My son is in reception and doesn’t write words yet but I’m not sure if he’s at the typical level for his age though (he’s 4)

RL here. Yes we do. Last term of Nursery. It’s part of read write inc to do so.

My daughter is 21 and writes like this so it’s impossible to tell!

She has a learning disability and severe autism but that does not make her less than anyone else…

And I’m pleased that she can even write like this because of the absolute mountain it was for her to climb

Kellph83 · 21/01/2025 18:06

I’d say reception age late nursery.

Nursery school or reception if a child that is very young in their year and struggling.

No it’s not poor for her age, these threads always illicit stupid replies ‘I think a 6 month old wrote it’ etc

I don’t think it’s poor at all, I work with children and I would have guessed 5/6. It’s really good to say she isn’t actually at school yet!

Reception, some letter formation and presentation points. at this stage of year 1 the majority would be writing on lines (some with guidance)

Year 3/4. Age about 6.

I agree. My NDN's son just turned seven in November. He wrote our Christmas card and the handwriting was very similar to this.
