Step son used my bath towel

Green0911 · 19/01/2025 01:31

Want to gauge if IABU here.

My and my husband's towels are in the bathroom. Teenage SS keeps his in his room. We each have a hand towel and a bath towel. They all get changed every 3-4 days. When it came to changing them, I realised SS didn't have his towels in his room. He said he'd put them to be laundered a few days before. When I asked him which towels he'd been using in the meantime (he'd showered at least twice during this period), initially he claimed none, then admitted he'd used mine.

I blew a fuse. Couldn't believe he thought this was acceptable. Husband has laughed it off and is accusing me of being dramatic/blowing things out of proportion.

AIBU?

Makes sense now. He’s rather get mud and other stains all over your towels than his dad’s.

Have you asked him he didn’t use his dad’s towels?

I would make even more certain that his dad picks up after him, not you.

What makes you think the teenager targeted OP and didn’t just grab the first towel available?

This is disgusting. I would be really upset too. You've no idea if he washes his arse properly never mind any diseases! I wouldn't even share a towel with my DH unless it was a dire emergency. I'm shocked that so many people are OK with this.

Diseases 😆! Another trying to avoid leprosy!

OneWittyLemonCat · 19/01/2025 09:52

Make sure you keep you mug, plate and cutlery in your room too. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’d been using them too!

ChristmasFluff · 19/01/2025 09:52

Given the drip feed, I'm surprised OP didn't notice that step son had used her towel after his first shower, since he's such a grubby bug....

Washing towels after just one use is what is grim. Why on earth would you do that? Incredibly wasteful and unnecessary, and dreadful for the planet.

We will have to agree to differ, we don't wear same clothes twice either including pyjamas, pillow cases changed twice a week but bedding only once. I like clean.

I have woken up to 17 pages of response. I'm only on page 3.

He is gently encouraged to shower (not of his own accord as per usual with teenage boys) following sports. He often leaves showers with mud all over his legs. His showers are suspiciously short. He refused to use deodorant. He used my hand towel in the past and left it absolutely filthy (noticeable stains). This is the first time I found out he'd been using my bath towel.

His towels now are hung in the bathroom with his father's. Mine will remain in my room.

That’s the best approach in the short term. Teenagers can be disgusting and better for you to try and stay calm.

That said, your partner’s approach was unhelpful and you might want to look at how your DSS is encouraged to be more responsible going forward.

And make sure he has his own kettle to boil, the diseases that could be caught from the handle of that!

Because he told OP he’s been using her towels. For days,

Me too. I’ve never shared someone else’s towel in my life and I’m certainly not going to start now. I can’t believe the normally uber fastidious MN considers you unreasonable @Green0911. I’d be appalled.

Yes and perhaps issue him with gloves and a face mask to ensure any airborne contamination is kept to a minimum.

Growlybear83 · 19/01/2025 09:55

@Netcam ☹️. I don't have an en-suite and there certainly isn't enough space in my bedroom for two towel rails! The hooks on the back of bedroom doors in my house are used for dressing gowns.

And what makes you think that was because it was hers and not just a towel? Unless you’re saying that the teenage SS is making a vendetta of this, which is a different thread surely.

viques · 19/01/2025 09:56

Does he know the combination for the padlock to the clean towels cupboard?

howsthehair · 19/01/2025 09:57

Yeah but still ... are going to acknowledge that "blowing a fuse" was completely over the top?

Because he didn’t say he’s been using any available towel, he says he’s been using hers.

Iloveeverycat · 19/01/2025 09:58

I don't get it I wash bath towels after each use then it doesn't matter who uses which towel.

Moier · 19/01/2025 10:00

Well first of all..don't keep your towels in the bathroom. Keep them in your bedroom.
But who uses a towel more than once? How do you dry it after you have used it? To use again? .. Just keep a fresh pile .. take one.. use it.. get rid of all those dead skin cells.. put in laundry .. take fresh one next time.

DaDaDoDaiDa · 19/01/2025 10:00

I am very unfastidious on the whole, but I don't share towels - any skin disease can easily be passed on that way.

Gloriia · 19/01/2025 10:00

howsthehair · 19/01/2025 09:57

Yes this the actual relevant bit. We can all have preferences and rules but to blow one's top when rules are flouted does seen ott.

Did you apologise op?

If everyone stuck to their own that wouldn’t be necessary. Not everyone want to do endless loads of unnecessary laundry.

😂😂 You dry damp towels again by hanging them on the towel rail in the bathroom like the vast majority of people do in the real world.

Eyerollexpert · 19/01/2025 10:01

I have a problem I don't want to miss any of this unmissable thread so can't get out of bed. 😀

SL2924 · 19/01/2025 10:02

That’s gross. What a weirdo. Plus he knew it was weird or he wouldn’t have lied about it. I’d have felt the same.

PreferMyAnimals · 19/01/2025 10:03

maverickfox · 19/01/2025 09:40

Seriously? What a waste of time never mind the impact on the environment.

You do you. I'll enjoy my comfortable fresh towel.

And time? One minute to put it on, one minute to put it in the dryer. They're not hand washed.

Funnywonder · 19/01/2025 10:03

musicismath · 19/01/2025 09:46

That you didn't answer the question re whether you'd mind using the towel if you were in OP's shoes.

I think I did. But just to be clear. I would be momentarily uncomfortable about finding out that someone else had used my towel and would take steps to ensure that it was unlikely to happen again. I certainly wouldn’t overreact or make someone feel uncomfortable about something they had done in error.

Nobody would be actively ‘happy’ about it, would they? ‘Neutral’ is the best you could hope for. It was an odd way to frame a question.
