I'm quite looking forward to this. And wondered if anyone else was. I don't expect so but thought I would ask anyway!

You're wrong. His team are absolutely excellent, JD Vance in particular.
What exactly are his radical ideas?

Ask Greenland.

midgetastic · 18/01/2025 11:51

So we in the uk already have sone growth
And the forecast recently revised up is for more growth

Trump however has a history of losing all his money and making crap investments

We also have a stumbling and falling apart health service whereas in the states you don't , and trump won't look at that

We have hugely lower murder rates and trump won't look at that

Yes .. it's clear what path to follow .. follow as in the sense of watch from a safe distance and pity the poor people living there

I think everyone who is a Trump supporter (and who dreams of this kind of "strong no nonsense" leader inflicted on every country on Earth) is going to see what this kind of leadership really does to the country, its people and world stability as a whole. Shame the ordinary people will suffer; and I feel very sorry for Americans who did not vote for him as the level of polarisation and hate towards anyone who is not towing the line is insane.

I do hope though in the long run it will quiet down the extreme right wing love affair the world seem to be having at the moment.

I'm not a Trump supporter but this thing with this sort of comment is that many people voted for him not because they actually like him, but they see the alternative in their country and it isn't pretty.

If my only options were Harris or Trump he'd have had my vote. And we vowed to never return to the USA when he became president last time round even though we have close family there. Surely stopping the bombing in Gaza is a good thing already?

LegoBingo · 18/01/2025 11:53

I quite like watching ceremonial things so yes. But I'd feel like that who ever it was.

I can't imagine having that much free time, have you considered a hobby?

Yet here you are, spending your valuable free time reading about Trump on a chat forum. Imagine that.

JanuaryBluehoo · 18/01/2025 11:54

@Notagoodenoughreason5

Sorry why shouldn't she choose mn and where did she say passionately adoring of the trump??

I read, I'm looking forward to the inauguration as am I.
That says nothing else.

whatwouldyoudoifisangoutofkey · 18/01/2025 11:57

I'm looking forward to seeing how Trump looks and performs if only because of the cartoon like presentation and his contorted tiny mouth gurning holds a horrible fascination .
But also because I want to discern any signs of ill health and mental decrepitude.

I’m unsure if you’re responding to me, but if you are, I live in the UK but spend a few months of the year in the US.

The recent ‘upgraded’ growth is only relative to other European countries…and let’s be honest, the EU is stagnating as much as the UK, if not more so in some places. It doesn’t mean that the Labour Party are doing a very good job. It means the whole of the EU are currently getting it wrong.

Whilst it is good to feel safe, and that in the UK very much depends on where you live, we desperately need to feel more prosperous. Currently the least prosperous US state has better GDP than the UK.

Shetlands · 18/01/2025 12:00

No you're not unreasonable if you voted for that criminal, volatile, creepy, ignorant, mentally unstable, racist, misogynist, rapist, sociopath man-baby.

midgetastic · 18/01/2025 12:08

No the EU isn't getting it wrong and growth is growth - now you want more growth .. never satisfied - why? The US doesn't do anything good with it anyway

there is much more than "growth" as a measure of success

Like the health of its citizens
The happiness of its citizens
The survival of its citizens

I understand that some people voted for Trump while pinching their nose, and the alternative was questionable. And I hope his talk is mostly that - just talk. But some of the stuff he is promising to do is actually pretty scary, to me, anyway - it can be interpreted in several ways but I can see he is heavily in favour of the type of set up they have in Russia - nominally a democracy, but in reality a criminal state run by powerful gangs. Where no alternative views are allowed and everyone is heavily dependent on the whim of the person at the head of the country, who basically owns you.

So based on the above, I would have voted for anyone rather than Trump. But as I said, I can see why he won. And I have a lot of friends and family in the US, with the majority supporting him - I also see what they have become, some of them are now proper nuts and its impossible to discuss politics without them screaming and acting weird.

Middle East peace - well, I'm sorry, this is just another temporary stop. I can't see it resolving anything. Good, of course, but it will not last. Also, wasn't it Biden who done this? I would really hate this sort of "peace" inflicted on Ukraine - where nothing is resolved and all it will do is give Russia time to recuperate and attack again.

Serpentstooth · 18/01/2025 12:12

I'm looking forward to using up any free tv subs I can find so that no news from USA seeps into my awareness over the next few weeks. Roll on 4 seasons of Slow Horses (7 days Apple tv via Prime) followed by Bad Sisters. No Trump hopefully. Americans must be so proud, electing a criminal and admitted sex offender to lead the country. Well done. You know what to expect. Good luck.

HellsBalls · 18/01/2025 12:12

I’ve only ever seen the president do the oath thing with his hand up. This time I’ll try and watch the whole spectacle. I think Trump will be good for America.

The EU has gotten it very wrong and the change in attitude to current issues, that we see in places like Sweden illustrate this.

Minimal growth is not sufficient. It’s not enough to improve the health of British citizens. It’s certainly not enough to improve the happiness of British citizens. The UK government will still have to try to find more money and that means higher taxes, and I hear they are going to look at disability benefits?
Higher taxes will make us poorer still and further dissatisfied.
The big problem is that Labour doesn’t seem to know how to grow an economy. But I hope they will see how Trump does it.

I understand that we don’t all share the same view. I think Labour have been a disaster since they took office, although I was also highly critical of the Tories. I guess we’ll see and I’d absolutely love to be wrong and for the UK to suddenly start to really thrive…but I don’t see it.

wholettheturnipsburn · 18/01/2025 12:18

Nah OP

I'm not American so have no interest.

We'll get some soundbites on the news, I imagine.

I don't worship at the altar of the US and find then"special relationship" cringey as fuck

Plus of course the orange nutcase is a wrong 'un.

Women championing a misogynistic, regressive, criminal rapist. What a time to be alive.

And hoping he “rubs off on us here”. Urgh.

What changes in attitude in Sweden are you talking about?

VonHally · 18/01/2025 12:36

The World Economic Forum is taking place in Davos next week. Trump will not be there in person due to the inauguration. I kind of wondered if those in command of the WEF engineered the date to coincide with the Big Day for T, but I'm sure it didn't....

Trump will participate by video link or other means probably an AI version of him 😊so he is helping climate change in his own way by staying in the US. Many of the rest of them at Davos despite calls for climate change action, arrive by private jet and helicopters.

Just musing to myself.

Anyway like a pp, I will just watch and wait, avoid most of the news about him and hope that all will be well in the end.

Changes in attitude to immigration

Interesting @Needmilkandbread .
Because we live in Sweden, and have not noticed those changes in attitude that you are talking about.

Absolutely, but everyone on here hates him so good luck. He's going to be a fantastic president.

I will have what you are on.

SnidelyWhiplash · 18/01/2025 12:53

I avoid all things Trump, so won’t be watching - the sight of him makes me nauseous.

3kgNET · 18/01/2025 13:00

You are right that the Government is making changes, and rightly so. There is simply not enough capacity. I meant in general I can not see a changing attitude among most people.

I was talking about the attitude from the point of view of the country and leaders, rather than the general public.
