What 3 things are keeping you in your current job?

I’ve been thinking about my current job lately - it’s stressful, with tight deadlines and a lot of pressure, and I’ve seriously considered quitting. But despite the challenges, there are a few perks that are keeping me here longer than any of my previous roles:

  1. Stock options
  2. Free lunch and bottomless snacks/drinks
  3. Travel opportunities

What’s keeping you in your current job, even if it’s not ideal? Are there perks or reasons that make you stay or do you just love what you do?

In this order ...

  1. Flexibility - absolutely crucial for me in a job role (seems like this is the same for many on here!)
  2. Allowed to WFH
  3. Colleagues in my team are lovely
  4. It's an easy job that I can do whilst half asleep 😄
Nothatgingerpirate · 16/01/2025 10:49

Just the money it brings, three times, if you want, OP.
Domestic and commercial landlords, myself and my husband.

Pay

pension

No weekend work

The management hide in their office, never on the floor and tell you they want to support everyone but really they don’t.

Gumbo · 16/01/2025 10:52

100% wfh
Unbelievably good sick pay (was clearly an error when they wrote my contract)
Excellent private health care for my whole family

TheStigarette · 16/01/2025 10:53

Wow @PersephonesPomegranate that pension and leave is fantastic. Where do you work (if you don't mind giving a rough idea)

stanleypops66 · 16/01/2025 10:56

Term time only contract
Good pay
WFH- organise my own diary so lots of flex

cadburyegg · 16/01/2025 10:56

Hybrid working, 2 days a week mandated in the office and 2 days wfh. I like the mix.
Flexible, good for me with the kids. Never had an issue in emergencies etc
Commute is reasonable
Parking
Colleagues are decent and hard working (had flaky colleagues in my last role)

NoahsTortoise · 16/01/2025 10:57

I don't massively enjoy my job - or more accurately, I don't enjoy it at my current workplace as it's dull and I wfh alone 100% of the time. But the things that make me stay put are:

Decent pay with annual payrise & bonus

Wfh allows flexibility for dropping/picking up my toddler, plus I can look after her if she's home sick

Want to have another baby so can't risk moving to an unknown maternity package

pointythings · 16/01/2025 11:00

I actually love my job, though it isn't that well paid, but here goes:

Terms and conditions; it's NHS so excellent sick pay, annual leave and pension

The people. Things are insanely stressful, we are short staffed but the solidarity is palpable

Operational independence: I can suggest and make changes that improve things

  1. Flexible hours and WFH
  2. Can use my annual leave flexibly
  3. Can manage my own workload and nobody breaths behind my neck
I don't particularly enjoy my job or my work place. But those are not something I'm willing to give up for a better place to work.

Can't think of a 3rd

My job doesn't pay a lot. But!

It's manageable with my anxiety disorder.

I am my own boss.

I meet loads of dogs.

Me too!

maddiemookins16mum · 16/01/2025 11:03

WFH 95% of the time (and self manage).

ShinyPebble32 · 16/01/2025 11:04

Exclusive WFH

Flexibility

Perks (lots of free products end of season, and yearly bonus/work trip)

QueenofallIsee · 16/01/2025 11:07

Bonus entitlement (up to 60% of my salary per annum linked to performance both of
me and the company)
flexibility (hybrid working, formal flexi work arrangement available for all staff)
menopause support (official support network in place, encouraged to nap if I need to with the fatigue that’s killing me)

Crushed23 · 16/01/2025 11:07
  • Intellectually challenging
  • Well paid
  • Get to work with smart, like minded people
  • Employer is sponsoring my visa to work in my dream city
  • Client entertainment budget means I get to do cool things for free, like go to sports games, fancy bars and restaurants etc.
  • All sorts of smaller perks (my favourite is free breakfast)
Acc0untant · 16/01/2025 11:09

The pay
I work from home full time
My manager is amazing

FastFood · 16/01/2025 11:10

I could earn way more in a bigger company / team but in this job I have

  • a lot of autonomy
  • flexible work hours and WFH. I can also spend a full day without any meeting so great for deep work
  • very small team so high individual impact
BubblePerm · 16/01/2025 11:16

Money - although not highly paid, I wouldn't be prepared to work for less.
Skills - I am not skilled for much else.
Interest in the job - although it's going to have a shelf life as I am a detective in major crime.

TeenTraumaTrials · 16/01/2025 11:17

CathyCole · 16/01/2025 09:14

Pay
Leave entitlement
Pension

That's about all I think!

This

I work in the public sector and am over 50 - pension trapped could have been a term coined for me. DH is in exactly the same position. We are both counting down to retirement which is a fairly sorry situation to be in but I get no satisfaction from my job anymore and a happy retirement is pretty much all that is keeping me going. Plus paying for DCs university

BrieAndChilli · 16/01/2025 11:31

5 minute commute
everyone gets on really well both in and out of work
As a small company get to work on a variety of projects and tasks, travel etc.
