What 3 things are keeping you in your current job?

I’ve been thinking about my current job lately - it’s stressful, with tight deadlines and a lot of pressure, and I’ve seriously considered quitting. But despite the challenges, there are a few perks that are keeping me here longer than any of my previous roles:

  1. Stock options
  2. Free lunch and bottomless snacks/drinks
  3. Travel opportunities

What’s keeping you in your current job, even if it’s not ideal? Are there perks or reasons that make you stay or do you just love what you do?

  1. inertia
  2. fear of failing to get anything else
  3. laziness
Hippomumma · 16/01/2025 09:47

Flexibility (WFH)
Unsettled job market
Pay

honeylulu · 16/01/2025 09:48

Good pension
Security (long service)
Well paid (could get bit more elsewhere but on balance it wouldn't make up for the above two points)

Also, I like the actual work (lawyer) which i enjoy and find interesting.
Plus hybrid working which I like and hours which can be long are nothing like some other law firms.
We merged with a bigger more corporate firm a couple of years ago and the culture is a bit toxic and the teams and work have been restructured and nothing feels cohesive. Lots of our junior lawyers have left.

I've had a couple of other offers but weighing everything up, I'm better off where I am.
I'm 50 and planning to retire in 10 years anyway.

Decent money, nice people, close to home. Easy. No stress. Interesting. Plus they are paying for me to get a qualification I should have got 20 years ago.

  1. I love it
  2. I have a great team
  3. Great work-life balance
PissedOffNeighbour22 · 16/01/2025 09:53

I hate my job most of the time as I work long hours and it's very stressful. But I stay due to:

Leave entitlement - it's good because I've been in the job 20yrs so have accrued

Fairly flexible - I can pretty much have whatever time off I want, date wise.

Can plan my own time - this is essential as my DP has multiple jobs and a main job that is not flexible. I travel overnight for work regularly so can only do this on days my partner isn't working. Work rarely dictate the days I have to travel.

EvilNextDoor · 16/01/2025 09:54

Work from home
pension
my line manager

That’s it - pay is so so

Dweetfidilove · 16/01/2025 09:55

My manager/team is amazing.
The job is quite secure.
Flexibility.
Generous annual leave.
Good pension.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 16/01/2025 09:56
  • It's incredibly flexible, I actually feel like I can parent around my role without DS being an inconvenience every time he's sick/has parents evening/pops into my head at work
  • It's really challenging and engaging in all the right ways. I'm currently building several functions and have the right balance of being left on my own to get on with it/support from peers.
  • It pays well, and the benefits are incredible.

Honestly I think I'm here for the long haul now - I've worked in many different places and all like to say they're flexible/supportive/have a good culture, but this is the first place I've found that actually is and I'm hooked 😂

My own room.....(so I can surf MN!)

School holidays (work term time only)

Pension pot

😏 I do sometimes worry that MN is the top option for webpages on my work laptop 😂

cheesegromit13 · 16/01/2025 10:02
  1. Lemon Drizzle Cake. (someone's always baking)
  2. 3 minutes from kids school
  3. Hours, I don't need childcare anymore
Dontcallmescarface · 16/01/2025 10:02

Pay
Location - a 20 minute round trip
Zero stress - I clock on, do my hours, clock off and forget about work.

PlainJaneSuperbrainthe2nd · 16/01/2025 10:04
  • good boss
  • Flexibility and job share
  • applying for new jobs is a massive amount of additional work

I don't love the job, but don't dislike it enough to go through the effort of looking for something else. Having a good boss, a good team and flexibility (plus a part time role at my level) are also incredibly valuable! I have young children so I guess this things are even more important in my situation

Mum2KSS · 16/01/2025 10:05

LardyCakeLover · 16/01/2025 09:40

  1. Only an 8 mile (20 minute) commute
  2. Easy, totally stress free work
  3. £700 day rate

But sooooo boring

Intrigued to know what you do Lardy 😯

Kashmiri24 · 16/01/2025 10:07

I’m a healthcare professional and for me it’s my colleagues, the patients (I work in dementia care) and the fulfilment I get from my work. Money isn’t everything.

Weepingwillows12 · 16/01/2025 10:07

My work is usually (not always) interesting and i lean new things all the time

I like my colleagues.

My boss allows me to have loads of flexibility.

QuimCarrey · 16/01/2025 10:08

Flexibility, enjoy role, reasonable ratio of effort to money.

YessicaHaircut · 16/01/2025 10:08

It’s term time only and I work 3 days a week (job share)
I have my own office
No direct supervision so I can plan and manage my own workload.

Good thread OP, it’s definitely worth thinking about the positives of our jobs!

ItWasntMyFault · 16/01/2025 10:08

Reasonable salary
The fact I can work from home
Decent amount of leave
