On the Beach advert. Is it just me?

Or is it borderline offensive? I like to swear as well as the next person but this just sounds so crude and awful. I can imagine if you're a bit hard of hearing then you'd be quite shocked.

I don't often get annoyed by this type of thing but this is really winding me up at the moment.

Oh but aren’t you afraid people will think you’re one of ‘the less well travelled’? 😉

Didn't you know that a northerner's passport only allows them to go on cheap package holidays ?! 🤷🏼‍♀️

luckylavender · 16/01/2025 08:47

I haven't seen it but the worse holiday I ever had was with On the Beach & they totally refused to accept any responsibility.

  • HelpMeGetThrough It's Paddy McGuinness saying "booking genius" etc to sound like "fucking genius"

So it's this that's borderline offensive?

Yes.*

Wow, is there anything that people don't find offensive these days.

Is there anything people won't (slightly) misquote to ramp up the outrage.
"Borderline" offensive - they stepped close to the line - deliberately. It is the reason we have regulators. Defines the line.

FluffyPineapples · 16/01/2025 09:06

Doesn't bother me in the slightest. You need to stop being a delicate flower if it does. There are far more irritating adverts than this.

Iloveeverycat · 16/01/2025 09:58

Never entered my head it was offensive. He just says booking genius.
Until seeing this thread I would never of thought about it.

Actually one of the characteristics of a gammon is that they are racist.

To clarify, it isn't a term I use. But I know what it means.

Love the irony in this answer😂

Ssshhhh but have you heard about the special passport stamp for northerners? 🥓

flapjackfairy · 16/01/2025 11:41

I always think that their adverts are guaranteed to put most people off ever booking with them. Surely nota wise move in the world of advertising!

Calua · 16/01/2025 11:44

I just searched for it as had never seen it. People must be trying really hard to be offended by this, although it'll give whoever deals with complaints a good laugh. 😁

I wouldn't say I'm offended by it and wouldn't bother complaining. I don't think most people actually would. But it's OK to not like it and express an opinion without the passive aggressive laughing emoji response.

Calua · 16/01/2025 11:56

@Crystall88 I mentioned it as according to Google it received quite a lot of complaints, and Paddy McGuinness himself made a video response to all the people getting in touch with him on social media over it.
Wasn't meant in a PA manner, but having worked in complaints many years ago, I can imagine something like this would give someone a laugh in amongst reading numerous negative (and usually fairly boring) emails.

Edit to add: It's not people disliking it, but the ones who are actually offended by it, which quite a few seem to be.

StockpotSoup · 16/01/2025 12:16

YABU. It’s a crap advert and I’d walk into traffic to avoid the family in it, but I can’t get worked up about something sounding vaguely like “fucking” if you try really hard to hear it.

I do wonder why they use such obviously non-aspirational characters in the ad, but maybe it’s a deliberate contrast to the typical holiday ads where everyone looks glamorous - a kind of “You too can enjoy lounge access even though you’re not thin, rich and beautiful” hook. They’ve been running the campaign for years, so it must be working somehow.

Irony is another word you don't know the meaning of, I see.

Works for me. I gave up being aspirational about 25 years ago.

Makes the grind of daily life a little more tolerable.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/01/2025 13:23

Irritates me too, especially as the company is trying to appeal to the family market.

KittenPause · 16/01/2025 14:30

I hate it too

It clearly is marketed to a specific demographic

onwardsup4 · 16/01/2025 15:06

Likewhatever · 15/01/2025 21:05

Yes, grim. Not keen on KFC’s use of “clucking” either.

Edited to add, the lowest point was kitchen roll Plenty’s “Juan Sheet” character. I’m not going to quote but just revolting.

Edited

Wasn't that meant to be one sheet as in only need to use one sheet?

murasaki · 16/01/2025 15:16

onwardsup4 · 16/01/2025 15:06

Wasn't that meant to be one sheet as in only need to use one sheet?

Oh come on, it's one shit, surely.

murasaki · 16/01/2025 15:17

And that awful family in the old advert put me off even considering them. The fact they were northern was neither here nor there, it was the behaviour.

onwardsup4 · 16/01/2025 15:23

@murasaki no I don't think so not for kitchen roll. I actually quite like the Juan sheet. Not that I watch adverts anymore

onwardsup4 · 16/01/2025 15:26

It's Juan Sheet does plenty nothing to do with one shit

murasaki · 16/01/2025 15:27

I didn't mind it, that's just what I thought it was saying, and to be fair, I do use kitchen roll as a starting point to deal with my arsehole cat's so called but probably deliberate occasional 'accidents' so my view is probably biased!

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 16/01/2025 15:32

I'll defend Juan Sheet as well. Kitchen roll is not shit-related, the pun is one/Juan.

CornishTeaTime · 16/01/2025 15:35

soupfiend · 15/01/2025 20:11

I dont like implied swearing either, even though I am a complete potty mouth.

Adverts are not the place for obscenities

I thought it was booking.com to be honest anyway, shows how much impact it had

I also never liked and would never buy anytnig from French Connection UK for that reason either.

I also thought it was for booking.com
Ive heard it several times this week and each time it grabs my attention abd genuinely think it sounds like f@£#ing.com - the marketing/pr has done its job we are all talking about it!!!!
