On the Beach advert. Is it just me?

Or is it borderline offensive? I like to swear as well as the next person but this just sounds so crude and awful. I can imagine if you're a bit hard of hearing then you'd be quite shocked.

I don't often get annoyed by this type of thing but this is really winding me up at the moment.

I did love him in Phoenix Nights

I also can’t stand the Air B&B advert (I think it is) the song they use at the end has swear words muted but you can obviously tell what they’re meant to be.

Which advert? I just looked it up and the songs were aux champs elysees or teenage dirt again. Is there another one?

LoveBluey · 15/01/2025 22:51

I dislike paddy McGuiness and on the beach so no arguments here but I hadn't actually noticed he was doing implied swearing. I think it's because of the exaggerated accent.

In my accent booking doesn't rhyme with a swear word so it didn't click!

Youtookmyhandle · 15/01/2025 23:03

It was only said once in the first advert. I think people complained and now they say it a lot more.

snotathing · 15/01/2025 23:09

It's a horrible ad.

itsnotmeitsu · 15/01/2025 23:22

@AndThereSheGoes Why is everyone aghast at the "tradfam northern gammonista ? > Perhaps because it's stereotyping 'northerners' as a generic group that nobody would want to be around.

namechangeGOT · 15/01/2025 20:40

What the book is a tradfam northern gammonista?

Someone who just wants to book a cheap holiday apparently.

Nanny0gg · 15/01/2025 23:33

MoodySky · 15/01/2025 20:07

It's Paddy McGuinness saying "booking genius" etc to sound like "fucking genius"

I thought it was just me!

But I hate the advert anyway

Why is everyone aghast at the "tradfam northern gammonista ?
I recognise that family dynamic. Every cruise ship is full of them.

Your classism says a lot more about you than the people you’re talking about.

Dramatic · 15/01/2025 23:36

Like a pp said I thought it was for booking.com for ages so it's not very effective 😂

Because using 'northern' as an insult is lazy and makes you sound like a bit of a knob.

Coolasfeck · 15/01/2025 23:46

These type of ads make me think ‘cheap’ and possibly fly by night. I wouldn’t risk handing my money over as I’d be concerned it’s a cowboy outfit and I’d lose my money and holiday when they inevitably go bust.

WhiteRosesInMyDreams · 15/01/2025 23:53

It’s so lame. Just like FCUK.

Is it supposed to be a little bit rebellious, subversive..? It’s just crap.

user243245346 · 15/01/2025 23:56

Emm - it's a play on words. "Booking genius". You might not find it funny but I can't believe anyone finds that offensive

Ooooh, people from the North. Not like you. Keep your distance from them, just in case they give you Northern cooties 🤣

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 16/01/2025 00:06

Had this conversation with DH tonight. Yes, it's clever marketing as it gets people talking, unfortunately it's putting a lot of people off. Not going on holiday but don't think I would even look at them for something. Also annoying is the adverts where they shout at you - currently Dunelm!

InSearchOfMartin · 16/01/2025 00:07

It's immature and juvenile and pathetic, just like booking.com, booking.yeah or whatever. Just grow up!

XiomarasHandbag · 16/01/2025 00:18

I've been wondering this for ages, does he say "holiday like a fool" at the end of the advert or am I mishearing it? (quite possible!)

Agree, it’s not new, it’s been a saying ever since they started those ads

PeachyKeane · 16/01/2025 07:16

Imagine targeting the working class northern oiks.... goodness me.

I use OTB every time I want to book a package holiday because they're a local firm to me and they're always quite a bit cheaper than the other firms such as Tui, etc.

Your holiday is what you make it. If you avoid them and pay more because you don't want to mix with the rif raf, up to you.

😂😂😂😂

They're a well established company. We've used them a few times in the past when we were looking for a relatively cheap break in the sun when DS was little.
Always had a a really good experience.

Coolasfeck · 16/01/2025 07:20

You must be a bit of a fan of the brand to know exactly what year they started - lol.

Doesn’t really change my view that they don’t sound like a company I’d trust to give a significant amount of my money to. This is why these type of ads are like marmite. Some love the tackiness of it all and some will be put off by it. The ad agency will have done their research into their target customers tastes.

Oh gosh. My mum and I both heard it as “fucking geniuses” for ages.
When I finally worked out what he was saying, I just thought it was his northern accent that my brain just couldn’t comprehend 😆

From reading this thread I realise it was clever advertising- look how it’s got us all taking
