Random cupcake!

Has anyone else received a random chocolate chip cupcake in the post this morning? It's clearly a marketing stunt - and looking at the sender it may have come via Tesco - but I'm a bit foxed! Not least because I have a clubcard and never in my life have I bought cupcakes at Tesco - I am not their demographic in the slightest for this - I don't have a sweet tooth and never trouble the cake aisle when I go shopping. I'm not complaining, just seems a bit odd!

No cupcakes here, but I do love the expression "I never trouble the cake aisle" 😂

I loved that too!!

No cupcake here either. I've googled and nothing is coming up, so I'm just hanging around to see what it's all about.

Ooh how intriguing! I wonder if it’s something like that Cadbury Secret Santa chocolate thing? Although would be weird for someone who knows you to send a secret cupcake if you don’t eat sweet treats.

Sorry, I’m no help. Following with interest. Hope it’s not a wind-up 😩

Offcom · 13/01/2025 12:56

Hmm, first thought is it Blue Monday related? Although I believe in our culture it’s traditionally observed on the third Monday in January so maybe not

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 13/01/2025 12:57

I wished I'd been sent a cupcake.

I googled too and nothing came up which is why I thought to post here.

It definitely looks like a promo thing - luckily not just a random cupcake with a note saying 'Eat me!' which would make me think someone was trying to poison me! (And if they wanted to do that they should just put the arsenic in pasta!)

It really is! Thanks for joining me in curiosity!

I should take a photo really to help internet sleuths shouldn't I?!

That crossed my mind too - but as you say, a bit early in the month. Plus why me?!

I'm loving the terminology - troubling the cake aisle and mauling the wine aisle. Makes shopping sound like fun. (I don't buy frozen stuff much so give that aisle the cold shoulder).

Yes please to a photo.

(I'm really invested now!) 😁

Have you abandoned all your New Year’s resolutions in spectacular style? Maybe there’s some incriminating CCTV from said wine aisle

Here we go! It was sent via tracked mail too!

And Tesco is mentioned on the advertising blurb that came with it…

I’ve checked the packaging for asbestos and explosives - neither present, so I don’t think anyone is wishing me harm?!

Random cupcake!

Good theory! Although I’m doing Boring Dry January so nothing blackmail-able there. It’s a mystery!

I remember a few years ago, a company did something similar and posted chocolate bars through people's letterboxes. All hell broke loose when the owners' dogs ripped the packaging and ate the chocolate, which is poisonous to dogs.

MartinCrieffsLemon · 13/01/2025 13:36

Looks like a promo from the cake company not Tesco

Do you use any freebies giving sites?

JoanCollinsDiva · 13/01/2025 13:37

How weird - are you going to eat it? I wouldn't!

StrawberrySquash · 13/01/2025 13:38

Looks like it's a new product and they are doing sampling via Tesco. Tesco have the database that will be far better than the muffin people. Although I'd expect them to target cake aisle troublers. You need people with some likelihood to buy!

Nope, no freebie sites - maybe a joint promotion between the two because the note says it is available in-store from today... presumably thinking that people will eat it and then go and buy more.

I live very close to a big Tesco but no one else in my flats got one as it was too big to put through the letterbox slots so was left on top and I got there as it was being delivered - I'm the only one out of six to get one, so it's not just a 'send to the local area' thing... weird!

Nope! Even if it was my favourite food I wouldn't be tempted by an unsolicited muffin/cupcake-thing!

Exactly! If it was a free bottle of Pinot Noir then guilty-as-charged from a database perspective! But I am the furthest person away from buying this product. Also the fact that it was tracked delivery!! And it wasn't just in a protected envelope... it had it's own little box!
