Random cupcake!

Has anyone else received a random chocolate chip cupcake in the post this morning? It's clearly a marketing stunt - and looking at the sender it may have come via Tesco - but I'm a bit foxed! Not least because I have a clubcard and never in my life have I bought cupcakes at Tesco - I am not their demographic in the slightest for this - I don't have a sweet tooth and never trouble the cake aisle when I go shopping. I'm not complaining, just seems a bit odd!

That's a gluten free company. (Shar) they do a lot of testing / samples. Definitely a bit random though (I've had stuff sent from them before, but only cos I signed up to review)

SausageRoll2020 · 13/01/2025 13:45

The logo on the packaging looks like a gluten free company (can't remember their name)
Are you on any kind of caeliac mailing lists?

ElphabaFlies · 13/01/2025 13:47

It's Schar gluten free - so I bet at some point you've signed up, had a trial box, ticked a box somewhere.

Oh interesting - I'm not coeliac either. Also 99% sure I haven't signed up to anything - all feels a bit tangential!

I wouldn't be eating it, I watch Midsommer Murders!

Not my knowledge and I am sure I didn't deliberately sign up for it - maybe I idly ticked a box somewhere at some point?

Here we go! It was sent via tracked mail too!

And Tesco is mentioned on the advertising blurb that came with it…

I’ve checked the packaging for asbestos and explosives - neither present, so I don’t think anyone is wishing me harm?!

This is a gluten free brand, they often send out samples of stuff if you sign up to their newsletter or something. My daughter is coeliec so I use this brand all the time. Wonder was it sent to wrong house, maybe someone signed up to their newsletter and mistyped house number or something.

I've never heard of Schar or received anything from them before - maybe I ticked something, somewhere in the past without thinking, but definitely not on purpose. As goes to show really as I've never heard of them before but others on here have - wonder when I did that!

I thought it was an error at first but it was my name and my address - and my first name isn't very common, hence why it was so odd.

I'm now worrying that I have randomly signed up to something(s) without thinking and will be deluged in the coming weeks by trials of things that I would never purchase myself... still, could be fun?!

Nope, no freebie sites - maybe a joint promotion between the two because the note says it is available in-store from today... presumably thinking that people will eat it and then go and buy more.

I live very close to a big Tesco but no one else in my flats got one as it was too big to put through the letterbox slots so was left on top and I got there as it was being delivered - I'm the only one out of six to get one, so it's not just a 'send to the local area' thing... weird!

Others might not have Tesco Clubcards

BitOutOfPractice · 13/01/2025 13:54

<awaits free cupcake>

There should be an emoji for that.

Weird, yes you must have ticked something at some stage 😂in my experience they'll likely leave you alone now 🙏

Dulra · 13/01/2025 13:55

To add gluten free cupcakes are definitely not worth the calories

Sorry I wasn't thinking about the clubcards in that respect, I was thinking about a local door drop almost because we live so close to the store - a different avenue of investigation!

They'll put me on their 'Sent the silly cow a cupcake and she never purchased from us - no more freebies for her!' list!

I think I am going to gift it to the seagulls that live by me. googles if seagulls are allowed gluten-free cupcakes.

I'd be searching the company in my emails to see if it brings anything up ! If not then more the mystery...

DUsername · 13/01/2025 14:05

Well this thread was a rollercoaster. I was excited by the idea of a random cupcake arriving in the post, then sad that I hadn't been sent one and finally relieved when I saw it was gluten free.

I am a regular cake aisle botherer though.

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 13/01/2025 14:08

Excuuuuse me, but that's a muffin.

DecayingRelic · 13/01/2025 14:11

I would not eat it, it might be poisoned

Owly11 · 13/01/2025 14:12

That is not a cupcake, it's a rather sad, uninviting muffin.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomewsChristmasBone · 13/01/2025 14:13

Are you or anyone in your house gluten free ? Schär, the company that made the cupcake, sell gluten free products so maybe you're on their mailing list ?

StiffyByngsDogBartholomewsChristmasBone · 13/01/2025 14:15

Nothing on their socials about it though, which you would expect if they are doing a campaign
