You do not cook, clean, tidy, drive or iron.
There seem to be a load of people on this site that do none of these things (and I am not advocating that they are the only people in a family to shoulder the burden).
So what, exactly, is your contribution?

I get brought margaritas whilst being wafted by palm leaves

PonyPatter44 · 11/01/2025 23:06

Presumably.they pay other people to do those boring jobs.

SevenWeeks · 11/01/2025 23:07

I'm the breadwinner and I have a househusband to do all the domestic chores.

monkeysox · 11/01/2025 23:08

Ironing is irrelevant

Greywarden · 11/01/2025 23:11

I do these things at least some of the time (except for ironing, which I hate and leave to my DH). I accept that they mostly seem to be important things. I don't accept that they define a person's worth though.

Off the top of my head I imagine people might do other useful or lovely things like working to earn money, playing with their kids, looking after their kids, taking their kids out, taking themselves out, organising stuff for their kids, doing life admin, socialising, doing hobbies, doing extra study outside of paid work, providing support for unwell relatives, volunteering....

Your list doesn't seem very comprehensive in terms of tasks that make useful contributions to a family and has no mention of leisure or of paid work activities.

MarkingBad · 11/01/2025 23:11

I do not iron, I make sure all my clothes don't need ironing

TooManyChristmasCards · 11/01/2025 23:13

I am amazing in bed. HTH.

I hire someone to clean and iron. DH drives and cooks. My ‘contribution’ is supporting the family financially, general parenting etc.

TankFlyBossWalkJamNittyGrittyIAmFromAMidSizeCity · 11/01/2025 23:16

I just sit around looking pretty mainly.

9tee · 11/01/2025 23:19

I don’t iron. I do the other things. I only buy clothes that won’t cause ironing - applies to entire family. I won’t waste time on ironing.

Same

Juiceinacup · 11/01/2025 23:29

I don’t cook DH does the cooking he enjoys it, I make snacks and lots of tea and coffee I don’t drive ( medical reasons) only buy non iron clothes, we do have an iron and ironing board if my DH feels the need. I do have to clean and tidy unfortunately but I’m thinking of getting a cleaner. I work full time, have my grandkids to stay over a lot, do the garden and put the bins out. Organise life stuff, holidays, finances and the shopping. I also do loads of volunteering in my community.
I have hobbies and spend time with my elderly mum so I’m content I’m doing my share.

I don't drive, I use public transport. I don't iron.

Barney16 · 11/01/2025 23:34

I read books.

Screamingabdabz · 11/01/2025 23:35

Everyone in the household cooks. Sometimes we eat together and it’s a joint effort.

Everyone cleans up after themselves.

Ditto tidying.

I drive. So does the rest of the household.

I don’t iron. But cotton and linen exist so the iron lives in the cupboard for anyone who needs it.

Domestics are for everyone. Not just those with vaginas.

Ilovelurchers · 11/01/2025 23:41

Not being deliberately obtuse, sincerely, but I find this thread weird.

There is LOADS of stuff not included in your list that people might do:

Work outside the home to earn money to pay the bills.
Childcare
DIY
Gardening
Handle household finances
Shopping and other errands

And also, some people are unable to do any of the things on your list or mine. My father for example is very unwell with dementia. He can't do any of the things you or I have listed (apart from the fact, I suppose, that his work earlier in his life now generates an income for himself and my mother through his pension).

He still contributes to his household and our wider family. Simply by being his own precious self.

NoNoNona · 11/01/2025 23:49

@Ilovelurchers
I meant to post this ages ago, when people were making a virtue out of NOT doing the things I listed.

Agix · 11/01/2025 23:54

I tidy and clean. I dont do any of the rest. Instead I read, play computer games with partner, watch youtube shows. My contribution to our home...not sure, think its mainly looking cute and singing songs.

MrsPinkSky · 11/01/2025 23:55

I twiddle my nipples.

Caswallonthefox · 11/01/2025 23:56

Take out, maid, walk, what is this you speak of?
I watch my maid while I listen to a book and crack my whip when I feel they are slacking.
When I can't be arsed to walk I get my cat to pull my carriage.

Hollowvoice · 11/01/2025 23:58

I drink wine and I know things

NuffSaidSam · 11/01/2025 23:59

So you're asking what things people do other than your very short list of things?

Work
Childcare
Pet care
Family admin
Laundry
Food shop
DIY
Car care
Care for other relatives

Why don't you make a list of everything you do and see what else is there other than the things you listed? That'd give you a good idea.

GuineaPigWig · 12/01/2025 00:02

I spend time instructing my estate manager to advise my housekeeper to manage the cleaner and the gardener and the cook and the ironing-boy (we call him Tefal Tim).

When I have spare time, I do my hobby (which is too outing to tell you about)

HTH.
