You do not cook, clean, tidy, drive or iron.
There seem to be a load of people on this site that do none of these things (and I am not advocating that they are the only people in a family to shoulder the burden).
So what, exactly, is your contribution?

To posters who don't iron at all( and don't pay someone to do the ironing) do you wear all manmade fibres? Because cotton and linen clothes need ironing otherwise they look like a wrinkled mess. Same with cotton duvet covers and pillowcases. Do you ever use a tablecloth because unironed ones look awful. What about if you wash cotton or linen cushion covers, they need ironing or they look a mess?

Oh crap you’ve now added washion cushion covers to the long list of things that it’s never occurred to me till now that I probably ought to wash sometimes. I’m 56.

I don’t iron bedding…I love ironed bedding..but I don’t have the desire to iron it.

I live in a filthy hovel, wear wrinkly clothes and eat pot noodles.

Me, too! Apart from the pot noodles. I make sometimes delicious meals from frozen ingredients that can be microwaved or air fried. I read, watch films and fiddle around on Mumsnet. It's not a bad life - though I could do with a cleaner. Are you offering, OP?

SqualidSlob · 12/01/2025 06:09

Fiddlesticks. The clothes come out okay if tumbled or hung up to dry. Never ironed my bed linen, and it's all cotton. Minimum 400 thread count - perhaps yours is just cheap?!

Highlighta · 12/01/2025 06:14

I drive and cook.

I don't do the rest as I employ someone who does.

Are you really looking for a list of things I do in place of doing those jobs?

I don't live in the UK, so your post sounds quite naive actually.
People across the world do things differently.
Your normal isn't everyone's normal.

Summerhillsquare · 12/01/2025 06:15

I love ironing!

[Gets coat]

Wallywobbles · 12/01/2025 06:21

I bring home most of the bacon, cook, family admin, washing and pay for a cleaner. When she's off DH does the ironing. I am setting my self up as self employed so do that quite a lot of setting that up at the weekend as I enjoy it.

I do the daily sheep tasks and the horses. DH does the ducks and chickens and helps with the sheep as required.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 12/01/2025 06:44

People on the site who do none of these things? Or lots of people who don't do 1 or 2 of these things?

I don't clean or iron because I have an incredible (very part time) housekeeper. She'll also tidy on the days she's here, but I tidy obviously the rest of the time.

I do drive and cook.

As to what else is my contribution? 'Just' being a parent (this doesn't get enough credit - the endless chatting about random 5yo thoughts is like a full time job in itself), all the shopping - groceries, cleaning products, clothes, organising all the DIY, sitting on the PTA, ensuring DS has uniform/clothes/is paid up on every extra-curricular group/school trip. Keeping track of endless parties and play dates, making sure each party has a age-appropriate gift/card/gift bag. Planning an annual birthday party, Easter egg trail, hosting playdates and keeping a mental log of which of DSs friends don't like broccoli or are lactose intolerant so I can feed them. Making doctors and dentist appointments. Dropping everything to care for DS if he's sick. Planning days out and holidays. Planning Christmas/stockings/decorations/festive outings. Looking after a terminally ill DM, making all her appointments, organising carers, keeping track of her wardrobe and personal care items and buying replacements, taking her out on day trips, finding this to keep her occupied.

Oh, and working full time in a successful job as a single parent to fund it all, because - surprise - women can work too! Even if I didn't, I'm pretty sure that's enough to make a 'contribution'. It's 2025 - are we ever going to stop judging other parents for having a little help?

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 12/01/2025 07:16

What a peculiar question. Are you a man?

I work, tidy and cook. Mainly work. I iron very rarely and definitely not sheets!

Ironing is irrelevant

I wish I had told my Chief Wren at wrns basic training that. The heat and light of her explosion would have light Cornwall up for years!

GrantMitchell · 12/01/2025 07:23

To save me from ironing in a moment of weakness, I don’t own an iron. It’s the safest way.

There's always one

Still irrelevant for most people.

madamegaskell · 12/01/2025 07:37

I drive.

I don't do any of the others, except tidy as I go.

My husband cooks.

We have a cleaner who also does a bit of ironing.

kiraric · 12/01/2025 07:45

I do cook, because I really prefer my own cooking. I don't really do the others

I have a cleaner who cleans and tidies

We don't have a car so no one in our household drives - we walk, cycle and use public transport

I just don't wear clothes that get too wrinkled

What do I do? I have this new fangled thing women can have these days - a job.

I have children who I spend time with. I read books, I go to the theatre, I volunteer.. I have yet to get bored enough to iron

Sherararara · 12/01/2025 07:46

I’m too busy doing my OnlyFans.
I don’t really need to iron for that.

WoahThreeAces · 12/01/2025 07:50

I iron only if I need to. If something is too creased to wear. Happens about 4 times a year. My family's clothes just....don't crinkle 😂

I could list all the things I do that aren't cooking and cleaning but it's early and I can't be bothered. But there's so many other things involved in raising a family and running a household than cooking and cleaning.

I have never agreed with anything on Mumsnet more!

Destiny123 · 12/01/2025 08:12

Haven't ironed since mid uni. Just hard shake the clothes before putting on the airer or hang dresses when still wet and there's no need. I do all the rest

I wear mostly 100% cotton clothing and never iron anything! I don't think I look like a wrinkled mess?

Pigeonqueen · 12/01/2025 08:16

Ironing is so outdated now, no one needs to iron anything anymore unless you’re one of the small minority of people who still wears crisp shirts to work or something. No one gives a shiny shit if you wear a top / dress that’s been ironed or not. (Yes I can hear my Mums voice in my head “but I care!”) but honestly society has changed so much now people care so much less about peoples opinions about what they wear. I haven’t ironed anything in about 10 years since I stopped wearing shirts for work.

I do cook and drive because I like to eat nice things and go to remote places but other than that I do as little as I can. I spent years trying to keep a super clean home and then I suddenly thought why? As long as it’s not a health hazard and looks okay I’d rather spend time doing what I want to do - Mumsnet, reading, watching crap on Tv, going for walks, etc.

Work. I work and ferry my children around. Repeat repeat repeat.

(I do drive though)

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 12/01/2025 08:32

I don’t iron; we buy clothes that generally don’t need ironing. Maybe we get the iron out once or twice a year.
do have a cleaner for the big stuff but lots of day to day cleaner still needed (have toddlers).
cook, drive and tidy though.

plus work, looking after kids, everything else needed - laundry, shopping, life admin etc

godmum56 · 12/01/2025 08:34

ThirdStorm · 12/01/2025 08:38

I don’t iron. I do the other things. I only buy clothes that won’t cause ironing - applies to entire family. I won’t waste time on ironing.

This!
