January really is crap

Nomoreburritosforgodsake · 10/01/2025 19:23

I’m a positive person and try to make the best out of things, count my blessings etc, but it really is the most depressing month…cold, wet, quiet, no money..just so blah.
I don’t mind staying in, have put fairy lights, candles, pjs and throws..still crap
Think it’s more the money and weather, just getting by, the most excitement being taking the dog for a walk and making lasagna. Dd asking for zoo, cinema, soft play and takeaways..just not happening this month

How to make Jan-well-Jan-March better?!

Does anyone actually prefer these months? I remember a brilliant year pre Dd where we went ski ing and then to Thailand just to escape it, no option for that these days 😅

No double figures here for ages. It does get to 10 in the forecast later in the week. 10 is still cold though. 15 is sort of ok, as long as it’s also dry. 18 is the temp I have my house, and I wear several layers including an oodie and have a blanket over me, so it’s not really warm, is it?

Edited

Not warm no, but looking at winter in lots of places, i do think we get off lightly here considering our latitude. I make myself go for a walk every day in winter where poss and it’s changed my outlook at lot. There is a lot of beauty in winter.
And failing that.. spring is around the corner.

ChicagoPizza · 10/01/2025 22:26

I’m a positive, sunny upbeat person who has found January 2025 an utter shit show so far. It’s dreary, hum drum, grey, cold and miserable.

cant wait for my sunniness to come back

olivehater · 10/01/2025 22:27

Love it. Christmas out the way. Kids packed off to school. Lots of fresh winter walks. A few plans to see people I love that couldn’t fit in in December. A bit of a clear out. Hate Feb though! Fed up of the cold weather by then. Feb half term is the worst week of the year. Stuck in with the kids and shit weather normally so nothings my for them to do.

Mrsgreen100 · 10/01/2025 22:27

Getting though with painting and making stuff
and then soup , reading etc
it’s really hard as can’t drive in the dark live remote
but it’s going to get lighter!!!!
🤞🤞🤞

@cardibach it's not about winning, it's about enjoying my favourite time of year, not sure where you live but I'm in the SE and we had lots of heat, sun and long days from June to October last year. I'll send some sympathy over though as sounds like you need a bit Wink

ChicagoPizza · 10/01/2025 22:30

For me personally, I feel like it’s something to do with living coastal in a deprived city. We don’t have a lot of indoor things to do.

We have one absolutely shit museum.

and about 6899 over priced charity shops. And that sums up the city centre!

It’s less cold than elsewhere. Whoop.
Spring - in any meaningful, non-meteorological sense - is month a away.

Are you being sarcastic?

No. Why would you think that? Someone comes on after pages of people saying it’s crap and not crisp to say it’s lovely and crisp. Insensitive.

cardibach · 10/01/2025 22:34

Doodleflips · 10/01/2025 22:22

Why should they read the room. It’s their opinion.

On a thread giving people who hate January space to vent and after it’s been pointed out that it’s not crisp mostly and anyway most of us (on the thread) don’t like it even when it is.
All the cold lovers get very cross when for 3 days it’s vaguely warm and they want to moan about it and those of us who hate the cold point out it’s 3 days out of 12 months…

Crikeyalmighty · 10/01/2025 22:35

I liked it more in Copenhagen when we lived there- proper snow a few times every winter- more sun , less rain although a fair bit of gloom still - a lot of xmas lights kept on till early Feb in houses, squares, balconies, , warm cosy cafes and candles and heating was all great geothermal heating and houses with no draughts!!

South Wales. Summer was crap, but actually 8 don't need it hot and sunny - just warm enough I can get out and about without feeling shit or putting on socks and boots and 47 layers.

People are entitled to their opinion. It’s a public forum.
Yes, you and others think it’s crap, me and others think it’s lovely.

itsalwaysthesame · 10/01/2025 22:36

@cardibach the op asks "does anyone actually prefer these months"? lots of winter loving people have replied to say yes and the reasons why.

Maybe if you put a bit of warmth in your attitude you might warm up a bit 🤪

Crikeyalmighty · 10/01/2025 22:37

@itsalwaysthesame blimey - we certainly didn't over here in Bath- was one long damp fest - we were away in Greece late July for 2 weeks though - so maybe 'that' was summer over here

itsalwaysthesame · 10/01/2025 22:39

@cardibach oooh south wales is beautiful , I'm jealous.
I was in Pembrokeshire a few weeks ago, utterly stunning, fancy a home swap 😆

Rosesgrowonyou · 10/01/2025 22:39

We have freezing fog to look forward to tomorrow. Can't wait for that.

And I’m entitled to my opinion that banging on about how lovely it is to people who are made actually depressed by it (not a bit fed up) is insensitive at best.

Do you understand it could be a rhetorical question?

I used to live in Ceredigion (much better than Pembrokeshire 😉) but now I’m near Cardiff.

How is someone having a different opinion than you insensitive?

Perhaps you are the insensitive one, considering myself and others have said that we enjoy January before you said anything.

I love January and it’s been crisp where I am.

I actually love all of the months but for very different reasons.

There have been multiple posters saying they love January.

Your opinion doesn’t trump anyone else’s.

Thegoatliesdownonbroadway · 10/01/2025 22:54

January, love it. So quiet.

No more shitty inflatable Santas and Snowmen everywhere.

I was out jogging today. Beautiful icy landscape. I prefer summer, but each season has its upside. The days are getting longer, spring is just around the😀 corner.

cardibach · 10/01/2025 22:42

It’s not a rhetorical question though is it.

OP has literally started the thread to ask that specific question.

fluffyblanky · 10/01/2025 22:57

I hate January and I hate winter. It's dark, cold and shit. Everyone is sick. It's just horrid !

RampantIvy · 10/01/2025 23:17

I love January. The hideousness that is Christmas done and dusted, crisp, cold and sunny days, birds singing their heads off, clean night skies full of stars and planets and no pressure to go anywhere or eat beige food. And the bulbs are coming up, letting us know Spring is on the way.

I agree about getting rid of Christmas. We are currently "enjoying" clear skies, but my god it is cold. The snow has been on the ground for 6 days and daily highs have been 1 or 2 degrees, with sub zero temperatures at night.

We haven't had any post or deliveries for a week, bins haven't been emptied and the pavements are like an ice rink. The snow ploughs have left a narrow channel on the main road because of the cars that were already parked there, and the trapped cars can't get out because it has been so cold the mounds of snow surrounding them have frozen solid.

Praying for a thaw.
