January really is crap

I’m a positive person and try to make the best out of things, count my blessings etc, but it really is the most depressing month…cold, wet, quiet, no money..just so blah.
I don’t mind staying in, have put fairy lights, candles, pjs and throws..still crap
Think it’s more the money and weather, just getting by, the most excitement being taking the dog for a walk and making lasagna. Dd asking for zoo, cinema, soft play and takeaways..just not happening this month

How to make Jan-well-Jan-March better?!

Does anyone actually prefer these months? I remember a brilliant year pre Dd where we went ski ing and then to Thailand just to escape it, no option for that these days 😅

Sorry to hear about your mum and your wife's miscarriage.

Thank you. When it rains it pours eh!

Which Facebook meme did you get this little nugget from? Just to manage expectations, it's absolutely untrue. The sun won't set at 7pm until after the clocks go forward at the end of March. 11 weeks/77 days, not 38...

😁You are correct.

Even so the sun noticeably is coming back. It was dark at 4pm at Christmas and now 2 weeks later it's light at 4.30. By the end of the month it will be light at 5pm. I can drive home in the light!

Newmeagain · 12/01/2025 20:31

I definitely should not be living in the U.K. because I don’t react well to to this constant greyness. Yesterday was cold but sunny and I felt like a different person. Just felt happier, more motivated, went for a run. Today felt very different.

TuesdaysAreBest · 12/01/2025 21:40

Just peeking my head above the parapet to say I saw snowdrops today, lots of them.

For the 19264826391846 time. It’s. Not. Beautiful. It’s. Fucking. Cold. The sun makes it worse not better! It means it’ll be even colder.

I hate winter too and agree with everything you say but can I just ask how does it being sunny mean it's colder?

Ilovecakey · 12/01/2025 22:18

cardibach · 10/01/2025 21:44

One of the things I really hate is the palaver of going out.
Summer - slip my sandals on. Don’t even have to bend down.
Winter - make sure I’ve put in my thermals. Thick socks. Lace up the boots. Hat. Gloves. Scarf. Can’t be arsed.
There’s no joy to find. It’s grim.

Totally agree with this! In the summer it's so quick to get ready, just put on underwear and a dress and sandals, or shorts, top and sandals plus quicker to get the kids ready too, can even go out with wet hair and it will dry in the sun. Couldn't go out with wet hair in winter you'll freeze!

stargirl1701 · 12/01/2025 22:24

I try to see the positive in every season. It's brilliantly cold this year! DC have been up to Glenshee today for sledging. We made ice lanterns during the week. Curling is on - both DC and DH curling during the week.

Enjoying the hearty food - stews, soups, roasts and risottos. Roast beef and yorkies tonight. Porridge for breakfast.

Not doing Dry January. I had a lovely sherry before bed half an hour ago. DH enjoyed a wee whisky.

Loving sitting by the fire in candlelight. Winter poetry books are out to enjoy with a cuppa. I bought a peat fire candle which is making the house smell like my childhood!

Burns Night to come. DC have their poems and are practising. Tartan bunting up. Table runner out. Scottish Yoto MYO cards heard throughout the house.

I bought fortune cookies for Chinese New Year which is soon. There'll be a parade in town which is always fun.

If you try to live your life like Summer, you will find Winter incredibly hard.

malificent7 · 12/01/2025 22:31

I like rhe clean slate feeling and the fact that I am still in a comfoting dazed cheese coma after Christmas.
Why am I so skint though?!

Just peeking my head above the parapet to say I saw snowdrops today, lots of them.

And I saw snow (still lying on the ground for the 8th day)

I agree about the palaver of putting so many clothes on before going out @cardibach
I then have the palaver of having to vacuum the salty grit that I have had to put on the step and path off the carpet.

In winter clear skies mean colder temps. In summer, warmer temps.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 12/01/2025 22:53

I am struggling this year. Family issues and low carb diet, when all I want to do is sit around eating biscuits and cream cakes.

MabelMora · 12/01/2025 23:05

Scottish Yoto MYO cards heard throughout the house.

Forgive my ignorance but what does this mean?

stargirl1701 · 12/01/2025 23:16

@MabelMora

Yoto audio player with a 'Make Your Own' card of Scottish songs, rhymes and poetry for DC.

Oh does it? Thanks I never knew that. Anyway I checked my weather app and it looks like it's going to be a bit warner this week. 9 tomorrow and Wednesday here so at least it's not freezing anymore

Doyouthinktheyknow · 14/01/2025 17:52

It was noticeably milder here today and with blue sky, I could feel some warmth from the sun, it was lovely. The light felt better, gives me hope for spring.

It’s barely half way through January, still feels like a never ending month though!!

daisychain01 · 14/01/2025 19:09

I felt the same @Doyouthinktheyknow I stepped outside onto the patio at lunchtime and it really felt such a relief not to feel that biting cold, it was such a gentle mildness, just like Spring. Did my first bike ride for 7 days, which felt good!

owlexpress · 14/01/2025 21:13

Whereas it's been pouring here for days, warmer at about 10 degrees but windy, cloudy and dark. I much prefer the bright skies when it's minus 5, as long as you dress appropriately it's fine.

cardibach · 14/01/2025 22:00

As I (and some others) have pointed out repeatedly @owlexpress its not ok for all of us even dressed appropriately.

Many people didn't go back to work until the 6th Jan though (last week). In two weeks January will be over and the evening don't get dark until gone 5pm. That's the same time as October just after the clocks go back. And then we have another month where it gets even darker (and colder).

I totally get the summer love. I hate the expense of winter. But January isn't the problem everyone makes it out to be. Happy Birthday me for tomorrow 😁

Yes you've said, multiple multiple times... We get it! But as I am saying, not all of us prefer the more mild weather. Other opinions are valid too.

You stated as a fact that it’s fine dressed appropriately. My opinion I’d rather have the rain and warmer (appropriate clothing also available for rain) was dismissed by you. I was just pointing that out.

goodkidsmaadhouse · 14/01/2025 22:45

I hear you @stargirl1701

I have to admit when I lived in London I didn’t like January. But January in Scotland is bloody brilliant! There’s often skiing, and if not there are beautiful frosty hikes. The most gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. Lots of Burns and Lunar New Year excitement. And you can definitely feel the light creeping back in as folk have already mentioned.

Also we leave all our Christmas lights up through Feb which makes the house so pretty on the dark evenings and mornings.

Maybe where you are. Here there's just muddy puddles and nobody could give a fig about Burns. Night or lunar new year (including me). Surely nobody actually gets excited for Burns Night?

The kids absolutely do.
