January really is crap

Nomoreburritosforgodsake · 10/01/2025 19:23

I’m a positive person and try to make the best out of things, count my blessings etc, but it really is the most depressing month…cold, wet, quiet, no money..just so blah.
I don’t mind staying in, have put fairy lights, candles, pjs and throws..still crap
Think it’s more the money and weather, just getting by, the most excitement being taking the dog for a walk and making lasagna. Dd asking for zoo, cinema, soft play and takeaways..just not happening this month

How to make Jan-well-Jan-March better?!

Does anyone actually prefer these months? I remember a brilliant year pre Dd where we went ski ing and then to Thailand just to escape it, no option for that these days 😅

I love the cold and frost, love the dark nights, this is my time of year, I hate summer and the never ending days, sweating and lack of sleep. This is my month where I seek revenge to all the summer lovers those who tell me all summer that "it's not that hot", I say to all you January and cold weather haters "it's not that cold" or "the colder & darker the better" Wink

Oh I could not agree more! Loathe every minute of summer and so do my pets. We are creatures of cold and dark 😁

True, but you have said / inferred that there is no joy for anyone in January.

None I can see, no. Nobody has explained it.

Clingfilm · 10/01/2025 22:09

I've always found it fascinating that our northern hemisphere attitude to Jan is that it's just grim but if you asked an Australian, they'd associate it with back to school and the end of summer. I doubt their Augusts are as miserable as our Januarys though!

Ilovemyshed · 10/01/2025 22:09

Its interesting to see the split of love/hate for this time of year. Just goes to show we are all so different.

I value all the season changes but like Autumn /Winter better and am not keen on Summer at all. Hey ho.

Objectrelations · 10/01/2025 21:59

@cardibach where roughly are you located? It does sound grim.

South Wales. It’s no grimmer than anywhere else, objectively, and less so than some places. I fucking hate the cold though. It makes me depressed. Really depressed, not just a bit fed up.

One of the things I really hate is the palaver of going out.
Summer - slip my sandals on. Don’t even have to bend down.
Winter - make sure I’ve put in my thermals. Thick socks. Lace up the boots. Hat. Gloves. Scarf. Can’t be arsed.
There’s no joy to find. It’s grim.

Yep, it is a bit of a palaver, I agree. But once you’re dressed and going, it’s all good if you are warm and dry! And that in itself makes me happy; that I am all bundled up against the cold (me 1 - winter 0)😊

It’s a mindset thing (unless you suffer with SAD) - yes it might be far from ideal, but butting heads with something you cannot change means you either have to choose to adapt to it and accept it as it is or stick with being miserable about it. Either way, it’s still winter.

So yeah, annoying about the sandals thing but it’s not worth spending months feeling grim about.

Lamplighting · 10/01/2025 22:11

You lost me at ‘it’s cold’. That’s it. The end. Vile, depressing, horrible. The sun doesn’t help - just means it’s colder at this time of year. Makes me feel ill. Stops me enjoy8ng any of my hobbies - and most of them are indoor. I dread leaving the house and getting cold going to them and all the time I’m there I dread getting g cold leaving to come home again. I do wish people would stop telling me I should be grateful for sunshine when it actually means things are worse for me.

Edited

It’s really not that cold though! Double figures next week. We actually have pretty mild winters in this country compared to most of Europe and North America.

Once you’ve spent ages doing something you hate doing you can go out and it’s a little bit less crap than it could be? All bundled up against the cold = uncomfortable because of too many layers and still not warm, but it’s less crap than not wearing any clothes? Brilliant. I’m cured.

There is total joy in going for a walk on a perfect winter day like yesterday, cold, dry, bright and sunny, trudging through deep snowdrifts with a big woolly dog for company. It's just glorious!

AmiablePedant · 10/01/2025 22:14

The cold and ice and dankness is completely miserable, but it could be worse. We could be writing from Los Angeles.

Lots of people have.

Sunny cold days are liked by some

Seeing bulbs pop is liked by some.

Fires, blankets, books and telly is liked by some.

Just because it’s not for you, doesn’t mean it’s not for others. No judgement.

I think -5 and thick frost on the ground all day is pretty cold. Are you one of those who don't have the heating on and have all the windows open in mid winter types?

No double figures here for ages. It does get to 10 in the forecast later in the week. 10 is still cold though. 15 is sort of ok, as long as it’s also dry. 18 is the temp I have my house, and I wear several layers including an oodie and have a blanket over me, so it’s not really warm, is it?

Isseywith2witchycats · 10/01/2025 22:15

Its not been double figures in Halifax single figures during the day and minus figures at night hoping it does go to double figures next week

No there isn’t. It’s horrible.
See. We can both state it as though it’s fact. It’s not. It may be for you (fuck knows how) bit it isn’t for lots and lots and lots of people.

SunnieShine · 10/01/2025 22:19

Bloody love January - cold and crisp.

Take joy from it being a little bit less crap; a small win, so take it 😊

I’m sorry that you find it so miserable, can totally understand why it isn’t everybody’s cup of tea and you’re hankering for summer and warmth and light. I am too!

This current cold snap isn’t normal though is it? Hence it being all over the news. And no not at all, I actually hate the cold! But rather than spend January being miserable, I try and look at the positives. I do think the forecast for next week doesn’t look bad considering it’s mid winter!

Read the room. Or at least the thread.
It’s not crisp everywhere.
Lots of people hare the cold.
The cold hating people are likely to be on a thread saying January is crap, so don’t come on being chirpy about it.
What do you hate? I’ll make a glib post saying how fantastic it is when you complain about it.

Nature hibernates in January and I let myself align with that if I need to - a slow pace of life, rest etc. In a completely opposite state of mind, I also use January to review my plans for the year, do the annual budget with DH, think about things we want to do and things we ought to do (house jobs) etc. Sometimes have a little clear out. It's like the pause between the out breath and the in breath.

This is beautifully put.

I do this too without realising it.

I think December can be so hectic, that I really appreciate the slower pace.

It’s cold and I don’t have much money, so I stay in and snuggle up with a blanket and watch Tv/book, which I always feel guilty about doing too much of the rest of the year.

It gives me time to think about/plan what I want to do this year.

Yes, it’s totally normal for January. Which is why January is crap. I’ve lived through worse ones. This one is still shit.

Why should they read the room. It’s their opinion.

i'd rather read a book sitting in the garden in the sun and the thought of decluttering and having a clear out doesn't fill me with joy.
