January really is crap

I’m a positive person and try to make the best out of things, count my blessings etc, but it really is the most depressing month…cold, wet, quiet, no money..just so blah.
I don’t mind staying in, have put fairy lights, candles, pjs and throws..still crap
Think it’s more the money and weather, just getting by, the most excitement being taking the dog for a walk and making lasagna. Dd asking for zoo, cinema, soft play and takeaways..just not happening this month

How to make Jan-well-Jan-March better?!

Does anyone actually prefer these months? I remember a brilliant year pre Dd where we went ski ing and then to Thailand just to escape it, no option for that these days 😅

For the 19264826391846 time. It’s. Not. Beautiful. It’s. Fucking. Cold. The sun makes it worse not better! It means it’ll be even colder.

Totally hear that you don’t find it beautiful. I do. I absolutely loved my walk this morning, it was stunning.

May is practically summer! Spring starts in March!

Meteorologically maybe. It’s still fucking cold, wet and grey most years. As is April.

MotherOfUnicorns4 · 10/01/2025 21:37

January is a huge struggle for me this year as the cold, damp weather is making the arthritis pain in my feet unbearable. I’m usually a lover of all things winter and a sweaty mess in summer, but I am impatiently waiting for the relief of warmer weather now.

I’ve not hated it as much this year, as we booked in some post-Christmas treats. I went to the ballet with a friend and to see A Midsummer Night’s Dream with DH.

The sunsets have been amazing this year, and the night skies have been so clear!

I’ve had a massive declutter, and feel so much better for it.

And I spotted some green shoots poking through the mud the other day, so Spring’s just around the corner.

Too cold to leave the house for anything non essential. Isn’t fun.

yipyipyop · 10/01/2025 21:39

I've enjoyed it so far. Especially the super cold weather this last week. So beautiful when it's frosty and sunny. Not a fan of dark mornings though.

The worst is over and there is the merest hint of Spring in the air. Even in the north of Scotland. Have faith.

No it isn’t. January and February are far worse than November and December (though I hate all 4). And March and April are little better, Sheree September and October are often ok.

I prefer the cold, dark, quiet times. June/July/August are my difficult months...

Totally agree 😊Really don’t like July and August!

38 days till the sun set at 7pm. Hope this helps.

No. Because a) 38 days is a long time and b) it’s the cold, not the dark that depresses me and c) 7pm isn’t really that late anyway.

For you. Only one or two posts have told you ‘you’re wrong’ but just as you love the heat of summer, some love the cold of winter. Some like both!

No one is a huge fan of january. We use it to chill out and plan some of our year: mini breaks, main hol, plans with friends/family… things to look forward to. No huge plans or spending.

It’s v cold where i am and i’ve some days off. I’ve enjoyed having some time to do nothing and stay home in the warm. I’ve pottered doing small jobs, read, watched films, done spin and yoga. Much needed down time after christmas and being ill twice in a month beforehand! It’s looked beautiful blue skies outside today but our street is hideously icy still…

Maybe you need to book a january holiday in future? i know some people love that.

Pretty sure it would make everything worse. I’d dread coming back and it would feel even colder and more miserable.

Try to find the joy. Always try to find a positive.

Simple pleasures, whatever they may be. Mine so far have been swapping some lamps around to make the room look different and sorting the under stair cupboard. Very satisfying. Plus some lovely walks all wrapped up on the sunny days. Blood oranges. New bright red laces in my winter boots. Picking up some bargains in the shops for next christmas. New pants from Sloggi sale. Lots of £1.99 hyacinths from Lidl, love watching them grow so quickly.

A proper Going Out in the Cold outfit by the door - gloves, soft tissues for the endless watery eyes, decent umbrella, second pair of socks, proper hat.

Annual Planning Month in this house, keeps us cheerful. We look up nice restaurants/concerts/walks/trips/museums/markets/recipes/projects for the year ahead, the more obscure the better! Just bung them in your calendar willy-nilly. We went for an early breakfast at an old school caff one wet Sunday in Jan last year and it is one of my nicest memories of the whole year, tea in a chipped mug, formica tables, looking at the winter morning outside. So small, but such joy.

Embrace the dark and cold, you can’t change it; find a cosy, warm, satisfying indoor project and hunker down, knowing you won’t have the time or the gloom for it in the summer!

One of the things I really hate is the palaver of going out.
Summer - slip my sandals on. Don’t even have to bend down.
Winter - make sure I’ve put in my thermals. Thick socks. Lace up the boots. Hat. Gloves. Scarf. Can’t be arsed.
There’s no joy to find. It’s grim.

Great. Happy for you. But I’m fed up of people telling me I should be happy because it’s sunny. It just makes everything colder!

But I don’t tell people they should just find the joy in summer. I tell them I don’t understand how someone could prefer dark wet and cold because I don’t.

Mielbee · 10/01/2025 21:48

It's awful with a toddler. Especially one that needs to be exercised twice daily to stand a chance of bedtime before 10.30pm. In summer we can easily spend 3 hours at the playground and that helps but in winter it's a nightmare. She doesn't tolerate gloves for long and then gets really upset when her hands are cold and sore and we have to go home... Not to mention it going dark so early so there's a limited window to get out after nap. Just an all round shitshow.

I didn’t tell you that you were wrong. I expressed my opinion.
You’re entitled to disagree, but I am entitled to my opinion as much as you are.
Why are you so determined to tell everyone they are wrong, yet you are getting cross because you think people are doing that to you?

True, but you have said / inferred that there is no joy for anyone in January.

TroysMammy · 10/01/2025 21:50

I'm another year older mid January.

No-one in work is off on holiday so I don't have to work extra on top of my usual 2 1/2 days.

The sunrises are lovely and if I see a streak of colour in the sky at 7.30am when I do go to work I change route to drive along the road which is parallel to the beach. The silhouette of the palm trees against the emerging colours in the distance of the awakening day lifts my spirits and I'm in a good mood to get me through an 11 hour shift. Well it does for the first half hour anyway.

Darlingstarlings · 10/01/2025 21:51

Love January, love how quiet and calm it is after Christmas. Love seeing the brightness of the day becoming that bit longer. I feel I can breathe again.

laloue · 10/01/2025 21:51

Usually I love January- it’s my birthday, we generally try to go somewhere warm or exciting each year having “given” each other flights for Christmas or similar. We get back and the place is bursting with bulbs and life and newness. This year everything is off - no Pompeii, no Sorrento as planned because I have had a promotion and we’re moving…again …10th time in twenty years. I am excited but also miffed . My favourite month has been hijacked by life 😩🤣

MissAnthr0pe · 10/01/2025 21:56

Like: Christmas is over and not happening for another 11 months

Dislike: Tax return month! I know I can do it earlier but I'd rather not think about it until a few days before the deadline

WinterFoxes · 10/01/2025 21:57

I quite like it. It's the month where you get motivated to start the year well. No booze, healthy soups, frosty walks.
Can you set your DD some healthy challenges like going for a walk to clock up 5000 steps each day, or helping you make soups or casseroles and banana and blueberry muffins.
Teach her some constellations while the sky is clear and Venus is visible and the nights are dark before her bedtime.
Make the most of being indoors a lot by reading with her, making popcorn and hot chocolate then watching movies or having a game night.

Objectrelations · 10/01/2025 21:59

@cardibach where roughly are you located? It does sound grim.

Isseywith2witchycats · 10/01/2025 22:00

been stuck indoors all week due to the snow and I am climbing the walls with boredom, couldn't even get to my volunteer work this week, house is small so clean that took Monday out but I am praying this snow will go by Monday I hate it the disadvantage of being older not risking going out and slipping on the ice under the snow

Objectrelations · 10/01/2025 22:02

@cardibach not disputing the crapness by the way I hate it and find it utterly depressing too. But i'm looking to move and so won't move to where you are 🤣

Ineedanewsofa · 10/01/2025 22:04

I quite like Jan, as per PP I use it to rest and reset. I clear out junk, make sure I eat well, get back into a groove with exercise and plan for the rest of the year. Plus my birthday is end of the month!
It’s already getting lighter (wasn’t properly dark until past 5 tonight), I like the cold, crisp weather we’ve been having and the industry I work in has a busy January schedule so lots to get done.
It’ll be Valentines and half term before we know it!
