Reform UK neck and neck with Labour?

1000 replies

NeatDog · 10/01/2025 11:09

Absolutely shocked to read that in a poll Reform UK are neck and neck with Labour...

About 25% polling share for Reform and Labour.

I thought Blair was the worst PM ever, but Starmer seems to be giving him a run for his money.

Why won’t it end well? What will people do? Post angrily on X? That’s why you sanction it.

I don’t like reform, but you can’t sanction a political party just because you don’t like them. They as a party aren’t actually breaking any laws as far as I’m aware.

You can say they have racist members, well it’s not like Labour have never had any of those.

Bitrr · 10/01/2025 13:24

I thought Blair was the best pm in my lifetime.

Blair was a dilettante narcissist with a media-friendly smile, who rode on the coat tails of Gordon Brown. Everything that Labour government achieved was down to Brown.

@ilovesooty
So you have literally nothing of value to add, but wanted to hint that you would call me demeaning slurs if you thought you could get away with it.

Right you are. Duly noted.

Ah, another thread full of bigotry faintly disguised as (faux) concern.

NeatDog · 10/01/2025 13:31

To be fair, I think Labour and the Tories are equally bad.

I think Labour and Tory councillors are probably fairly decent people doing their best for the communities.

But at front bench level I think they are both out of touch.

And it is exactly this of take that pushes though who would have always considered themselves centrist/centre left, ever “further right”.

The BBC has been talking about the crisis in the NHS all week.

We also know that Labout has been talking about a "housing crisis".

The truth is, we just don't have the resources to look after refugees etc.

Did you post about this when the Tories let in up to 5m people from HK, one of the worlds leading financial center's and where UK companies operate there very easily?

No i didn't think you did.

Perhaps you posted, outraged, when, since covid, millions of people have come here to do v low paid work, claiming in work benefits plus allowing 100s of 1000 of students and all their dependents too....

No i doubt you did then either.

Oh i know, you were too busy posting about the 10s of 1000s crossing the channel since 2021?

No?

So why the faux outrage now? let me guess....... Labour.

That's not what I hinted at all. I was responding to the part of your post where you said "how many names you call me". Nothing more, nothing less.

Yes, I am finding people ignoring facts in favour of demanding censorship and hinting that the millions who finds Starmer unconscionable are (choose slur of choice) while wishing that ordinary working class people were not allowed to vote and political parties could be shut down at their bidding, do indeed seem very bigoted trying to disguise their authoritarian views as faux concern.

If it makes you feel any better, I don't think we should be allowing low skill immigrants in either.....

Especially ones that don't speak English.

Nope, its just that with all these threads, there was a distinct lack of tory voters criticising Truss Bojo or Sunak....

Threads on Reeves crashing the economy, because gilt yields have gone from 4.3% to 4.8% BUT when they went from 1.8% to 4.5%.... all of you were silent...

Well, its the tories that lowered English requirements, so why were there no or few posts about that?

Labour have inherited these issues but at least they have said they will "encourage" uk unemployed to do more low skilled work or lose benefits.

Something that should have been done years ago.

Proof will be in the pudding...

Why would the government be letting in people who don't speak English and giving them work visas? You need a certain level of English to work in the UK.

Ehhhmmmm, OK.

I was a tory voter and I'll criticise them if you want.

Bojo never gave us the Brexit that was promised.

Sunak's father in law is a billionaire that made his money from outsourcing UK jobs to India.

Reform need to be banned immediately before they start to get political traction amongst the working class in the north of England.

This is all the fault of X, and I hope Keir Starmer and the Labour have a robust plan for sanctioning social media sites that allow disinformation free reign to be accessed by ordinary people who do not possess the ability to sift fact from fiction.

Frightening times.

Your post is more frightening tbh. You want an unpopular government to ban a legitimate political party? Also want them to restrict what we’re allowed to see? Are the working class too thick to be able to make a considered decision? Your post says a lot about you.

We need to join together and rise up against plutocrats like Musk and people who are just out for themselves like Farage.

If you don't think the Labour party aligned with the unions movement set up for the very purpose of looking after the interests of workers, led by a person who has chosen public service as his career and has not sought out vast wealth has your best interests at heart why would you imagine Reform does?

Led by a banker wheeler dealer and funded by the richest man on the planet? Why do you think they care about your interests or what is best for the country for one minute?

Indeed. It's genuinely terrifying and is the playbook for all Communist and Fascist authoritarian regimes in history. Ban words, ban debate, ban political opponents, lock up dissenting voices, and in the end ban elections altogether.

Pol Pot, Hitler and Stalin would all agree completely.

This thread neatly demonstrates how populists win elections.

Slow hand clap to those who continue the narrative of 'everyone who doesn't agree with me me must be a right wing fascist or too stupid to have a vote' with no sense of irony about the fact that they are no better by trying to silence alternative viewpoints.

From a Political Theory view point these are fascinating times, the political landscape needs to adapt in in line with the changing world and we are living now through this change.

The next few years are going to be a rollercoaster but without doubt the left is handing it to the 'far right' by doubling down on its superiority complex.

Ok clearer now.

We are out of Europe and apart from a science and some criminal data sharing, out of all of its structures... so what else do you want?

Immigration? Well pre brexit, at least most of our lower skilled workers came from Europe and many returned easily.... esp as their economies improved.... look at Poland?

Now we get them from SE Asia and Africa, places were English isn't a 2nd language and where, due to cost and the fact their countries wont improve much economically, they'll never return, even when visas expired.

Brexit has caused many of the problems here.

It's so depressing. Heartbreaking even. I do not understand how anyone can actually believe that screaming abuse at those with different ideas will change a single mind or win a single heart, and I do not understand how anyone at all thinks advocating for denying other people a vote because you hate them (and she clearly does hate them) makes you anything but a terrifying authoritarian.

Flustration · 10/01/2025 13:48

Upstartled · 10/01/2025 12:20

You've accidentally made an interesting point. While the middle classes have convinced themselves that we live in a post- class age, it's just tribes y'know, it seems that a political discourse willing to discuss the concerns of the working class has, of course, disrupted the business of the established parties.

How Starmer can think he did anything other than seal the dea when when waved away the concerns of so many as far right brainwashing is beyond me. This is really dangerous on so many levels now and they will deliver us into the hands of Reform unless they act to represent the electorate and not lecture them about the form of their concerns.

I agree!

If we want to defeat Reform we need to understand their appeal and offer a real alternative.

16% of people in the UK are functionally illiterate. 1/3 of current school leavers do not achieve even a low pass in English. 18% of people in the UK live in absolute poverty and we have the one of the highest levels of income inequality in Europe.

The economic factors behind hardship are incredibly complex and simply not accessible to many people.

Instead people rely on their lived experience, and their lived experience has shown them governments come and go with no perceivable improvements in their quality of life.

These people lack the education and experience to properly understand their situation and the eloquence to express the challenges they and their communities face. Instead of listening with empathy, we rip their poorly made arguments to shreds and then dismiss them as stupid/racist.

Then someone like Farage comes along.
A rich charlatan, yes, but one a who is able to voice their fears and concerns in a way they can understand.

He tells them they are not stupid or racist. He offers simple and easily understandable explanations and when he tells them he can improve their lives they believe him.
