Is it disrespectful/problematic to take a sex toy in hand luggage to Marrakech?

We are going to Marrakech for a holiday in a few weeks and I would like to take my vibrator.

I’m likely to take just cabin bags.

Will I encounter issues either going through or leaving the airport? I know it’s not illegal but I don’t want issues - or to appear disrespectful.

No judgments please, advice only.

They are quite tight at the border. Not related to luggage but I was held up for an hour while I was quizzed about my job.

I'm going to sound like a massive prude....
I think it's quite disgusting to have a vibrator in your hand luggage when someone is potentially going to have to go through your luggage. Like maybe you are getting off on the fact that the security person has to handle your used vibrator?

It's a bit like men watching porn on the tube / bus... involving unwitting people into their fantasy wank bank.

You don't sound like a prude. Given where your imagination's going, quite the opposite.

I have been all over Morocco with work, boyfriends and later, my DD.

I would not take this in hand luggage to Marrekesh and DEFINITELY not during Ramadam. They are very particlular about things like this. DD(5) was taken away for 15 minutes qestioning once. Just because. Alcohol (unopened) has been confiscated.

No idea about legalities, but I would not do it. Also be very respectful with clothing.

This.

It is clear that previous posters cannot comprehend cultural differences and/or have not travelled to the country in question.

Whilst Morrocco might have sex shops… it’s certainly seen as taboo for women to go to them and OP could find herself in an uncomfortable situation.

I'm not sure it is fair on the security staff to put them in a position where they have to handle a used sex toy.

They handle far worse!

Make sure you clean it at the other end, you don't know where their hands have been lol

The base or the tip?

Nutribioadvanced · 09/01/2025 13:22

Actually, I think there is a fair bit of judgement on this thread. Lots of remarks that suggest that what the OP is suggesting is offputting/disgusting. It's feels pretty prudish.

Whilst I probably wouldn't bother taking one, as it seems potentially a hassle, I totally understand why the OP would want to. Most women i know use and carry a vibrator with them when they travel.

Taking a vibrator in your cabin bag shouldn’t be an issue at airport security, as it is not illegal. However, since Marrakech is in Morocco, which has more conservative cultural norms, it’s a good idea to take some precautions. Perhaps you could pack the vibrator in a way that is discreet and doesn’t attract attention. It’s battery-operated; so just remove the batteries to avoid it turning on accidentally. If it’s rechargeable, make sure it’s switched off. When your bag is searched, remain calm and polite. It’s a common item, so it’s unlikely to cause issues, If you’re still feeling worried, you could check directly with your airline or Morocco’s customs policies for extra reassurance. Safe travels, and enjoy your holiday!

Ilovelifeverymuch · 09/01/2025 13:22

Sounds like a threat to Morocco's national security 😂

Don't worry about it, cover it in your bag so it's discreet and not popping out if they open your bag and everyone sees it, but it's not illegal or disrespectful unless you're doing some silly tiktok prank or something.

Enjoy your trip and have fun flicking the bean 😂

I once made a security guy at a small airport gag. I was commuting by plane regularly, and had just thrown my wallet and passport into a bag I hadn't used in a fortnight, since the last time I flew -- and he put in his (fortunately gloved) hand and drew out a banana so black and soft it had disintegrated entirely, took one look and gagged, poor man.

I apologised literally every time I saw him for ages. I think his colleagues took to piss out of him...

Not the point but I'm amazed sex toys are illegal in Thailand considering what goes on there!

They don't like the competition.

Whatafustercluck · 09/01/2025 13:24

In which case, perhaps op needs to remember the lube, too.

Sorry.

I think the comment about using my hand is judgemental about using a vibrator.

Oh please!! This is ridiculous, if you don’t want any embarassment at the airport then don’t take it. Simple as that.

Curiossir · 09/01/2025 13:27

They probably see hundreds every day- I wouldn't worry.

MaggieBsBoat · 09/01/2025 13:28

Put it in one of the small plastic liquids back that way they don’t have to handle it. I wouldn’t want to touch someone else’s potentially unwashed vibrator.

FKAT · 09/01/2025 13:28

Help me out here as I'm confused. Why is it disrespectful to take a vibrator through Marrakesh security but not (say) Heathrow, Luton, Manchester etc?

MudpiesinEssex · 09/01/2025 13:31

Is it true "Carry On" scriptwriters look for ideas on Mumsnet?

This scene is bound to involve someone shouting "Son of a camel!" at Charles Hawtrey.

And Barbara Windsor's bra flying off at some unsuitable moment.

ABigBarofChocolate · 09/01/2025 13:34

As long as you take the batteries out it should be fine.

TiredCatLady · 09/01/2025 13:34

It’s unlikely to be confiscated at UK security but may be considered to breach morality laws in Morocco. Up to you if you want to risk that for the sake of a short break. From my own experience with North African and Middle Eastern countries, anything that seems to be a grey area is to be avoided entirely.
It likely counts as an electronic device so you will have to pull it out of your luggage at security in both the U.K. and Morocco along with everything else. It will also need to be charged or have it’s batteries in so as, if asked, you can switch it on/off.

The concern was because of the laws/customs of the country that you are flying into. It's not the airport itself, it's the destination.

It's less that it's 'disrespectful' than that some countries have legal restrictions on the possession of sex toys, as linked above.

Heybugee · 09/01/2025 13:35

I think I've watched too many "Real Housewives of..." episodes as I didn't give one second of thought that it might be odd to take a vibrator for a long weekend trip. Not that I've done it.

kate592 · 09/01/2025 13:36

When your bags get searched it's done by people wearing gloves, I've had it done a few times. I don't know why people are so disgusted by someone touching a washed vibrator wearing gloves, if you own a pet or have had a child you're often cleaning up shit how is that better? Or do people not wash their vibrator after every use? Now that is grim.

The chances are your bag won't be searched, ours weren't when we went to Morocco. Personally though I'd get a bullet vibrator, take the battery out and take it apart and then it just looks like the top of a lipstick.
