  1. Childminder announced they now finish at 5pm -was 530pm. They are "going to send me a new contract to sign". Hmm yeah but l am probably not signing it as l have a real job and 530pm is already waaaay to early. Time to find another childminder most likely
  2. Ex announces his girlfriend has moved into my road (for context the plan was for them to live together). Particularly odd as we live in a city with thousands of other roads and no shared children
  3. Drain man cancelled yet again so house still hums

What do you mean what is wrong with everyone? And what’s a ‘real job’? Like being a childminder isn’t one? I’d leave that childminder too but the ‘real job’ thing doesn’t work.

I am not running down the childminder job. It is hard to get to a childminders for 530pm, getting there for 500pm is nigh on impossible. I have a responsibility to my employer and my co-workers -that is what l mean by a real job so can't just do what l want. In effect if l am leaving 30 minutes earlier a number of days a week, then l am leaving someone else to do stuff, doesn't feel very fair

  1. find a new childminder
  2. why is your ex telling you this if there's no children involved? So strange
  3. that's life
Gizlotsmum · 08/01/2025 11:51

Oh that is frustrating. Good luck with finding the childminder, I guess they have their reasons but yes annoying. With the ex’s girlfriend better to be told than bump into unaware. Oh and boo for drain man. Assume private not shared sewer, if shared try you water company

loropianalover · 08/01/2025 11:52

I was rolling my eyes at you until I saw your house stank, that would put me in foul humour too so I’ll let you off 🤣🤣

This! The only oddity is why an ex would get in touch to tell you about where his new girlfriend is moving to.

It is the run of other people annoying announcements and scatty behaviour

  1. Already had a scan around and have found 2 childminders with the right days and they work until 6pm.
  2. I know right. Why tell me? If we had children and it was impactful on them then fine. We do not. This is on the back of telling me how great things are going with her -again why tell me. For clarity l don't seek this out by asking, he announces it in work meetings we have together
  3. Well, letting someone down twice is unprofessional. So back to 1) l suppose and find someone else

My house is foul. There is only so much candles can do and it's too cold for windows open all the time!

God knows. There was no wild or outrageous reaction by me and l can't see how he would get one. I just said the takeaway at the top of the road is worth a visit and good luck with the parking

I have a real jobs and I finish at 4:30 🙄

I'm sure a post on mums net, and dwelling on these things, will sort it all out.

Probably want to work less -wouldn't we all! Surely they know 5pm is so so early. The tone annoyed me as well, contractually yes they can do that but l won't be accepting it even if l wanted to. I already have a flexible work request and l my employer won't let me change it every 5 minutes -l only changed it recently

Whats wrong with you is what im thinking.
A childminder is a real job.
Tell your ex you dont give a fuck if his gf moves next door.
Drain man may have had something come up.
Have a coffee and chill out before you piss your self off even more.

5128gap · 08/01/2025 12:02

Your ex probably felt the need to explain why he's going to be in your street a lot. Sensible in a way as otherwise you may have thought it was connected with you.

fitzwilliamdarcy · 08/01/2025 12:06

It doesn't sound like you have much trust in your childminder anyway, what with your references to them being workshy, so probably best you're parting ways.

Hope the house gets sorted soon.

Yep, this pretty much confirms you don’t think childminders have a “real job” 🤨

You know every job is a real job, right?

HorsesDuvets · 08/01/2025 12:09

Sounds like "you" problems, not "everyone" problems.

Laserwho · 08/01/2025 12:09

Bring a childminder is a real job. The childminder will have other responsibilities and a 5.30 finish no longer works for her. If she has children herself she could be freeing up time to take her children to an after school activity or have other responsibilities at that time. It's not all about you

FranticHare · 08/01/2025 12:13

I'm with you OP.

Child care finishing at 5pm when many jobs are 9-5 is not helpful. Of course that is her choice, but not helpful. Ex's by default are idiots. And hate waiting in for people who don't turn up!

Hope all is sorted soon.

Childminding is a real job. You are slagging off her job.

If the hours don't suit you sure don't sign the contract. But she's perfectly reasonable to offer whatever hours she wants

TinkerTiger · 08/01/2025 12:16

I know a CM who does 9-5, term-time only and has a wait list. Parents always stopping her on the school grounds asking her if she has space 💁🏽‍♀️

SeaShellsSanctuary180 · 08/01/2025 12:19

Get the girlfriend to look after the kids as so conveniently located and her house probably doest hum as much.

Always best to have a positive outlook

dynamiccactus · 08/01/2025 12:26

Childcare finishing at 5pm when many jobs are 9-5 is not helpful

This. And by law she has to give reasonable notice, she can't just make a change unilaterally, it's a breach of contract.

In practice however, she can do as she likes as there is a shortage of childminders.
