  1. Childminder announced they now finish at 5pm -was 530pm. They are "going to send me a new contract to sign". Hmm yeah but l am probably not signing it as l have a real job and 530pm is already waaaay to early. Time to find another childminder most likely
  2. Ex announces his girlfriend has moved into my road (for context the plan was for them to live together). Particularly odd as we live in a city with thousands of other roads and no shared children
  3. Drain man cancelled yet again so house still hums

I have a real jobs and I finish at 4:30 🙄

Oooh

WhatFreshHellisThese · 08/01/2025 12:42

Zero issue with shift work or variable -done lots of it myself. But you can't just float in and out of work with my job or any of the jobs you listed. Imagine Judge Brown has a case in court 3 but no one can find her, turns out she need to go to pick up and has left so the case now needs to be re-scheduled. Not great for the judicial process or victim

My meaning is l have a real job then l have a commitment to. I can't chop and change on a whim. I have had previous jobs where colleagues have flaked a lot due to "childcare issues" thereby pushing the burden onto me and l am reluctant to do that. It is unfair and unprofessional

sushibelt · 08/01/2025 17:43

latetothefisting · 08/01/2025 13:52

so why not just SAY "I have a job" then.

OP CHOSE to insert the word "real" where, as you've pointed out, it was completely unnecessary, the point that she couldn't get there by 5 because her job hasn't finished by then, was already made without it.

She then kept on doubling down and defending it by making random comments like "I meant it was a job where I have obligations to my employer and co-workers" - so, again, literally ANY job, then?

The only possible implication of the word 'real' is that jobs where you potentially can finish earlier than 5pm, aren't 'real', which is just a stupid, and quite insulting, thing to say, so people are entitled to point that out.

This 100% this. There's some sneering going on

WillimNot · 09/01/2025 17:58

I can beat that.

  1. I run a pub and catch every cough and cold going. Tried to get a GP appointment for a week now as I'm pretty sure I have a very bad chest infection. GP desk witch says no, go and get Bronco Stop (despite me saying I've tried every OTC going)
  1. There was a fight in said pub over Christmas, crap but it can happen in a town centre pub. All involved barred. Except suddenly we have had loads of official folk turn up over "anonymous complaints". Despite it being obviously malicious, I'm having to put up with pen pushers treating me like a moron. The latest was Fire Regulator. I keep "all" my fire doors locked. Considering one is the front entrance very doubtful. They were so condescending to me but changed to polite when talking to DH. Clearly I'm just a woman and dim because DH told them what I did and they listened to him.
  1. Money is tight and it sucks. I'm starting to think this was a hugely bad idea but DH is so fucking positive (ignorant) that he doesn't see it. I'm very close to getting a job in Aldi because at least I will have an actual income

4 The amount of companies this year telling folk to do Dry January and avoid the pub. Get in the fucking bin. We do have non alcoholic and soft drinks you know. We don't force feed people Tequila and Fosters.

JohnTheRevelator · 09/01/2025 18:10

You have a 'real job'? So being a childminder isn't a 'real job' in your opinion? You sound lovely.

Yeah but pub soft drinks are always flat, they're horrible. I don't think you actually taste them. And there's hardly any variety, especially of sugar free drinks. And why is everywhere only doing Pepsi Max and nothing else now

Sounds like you live near a crap pub and somehow think every pub is the same. Try some
more variety

FranticHare · 08/01/2025 12:13

I'm with you OP.

Child care finishing at 5pm when many jobs are 9-5 is not helpful. Of course that is her choice, but not helpful. Ex's by default are idiots. And hate waiting in for people who don't turn up!

Hope all is sorted soon.

Might be worth pointing out that the OP is an ex too.

Crakajak · 09/01/2025 19:26

I was there until the real job comment. I don't need to say more. I will leave it to others.

Mama3737 · 09/01/2025 19:29

@FrannyScraps yes - so true. The childminder is already working a longer day than you in order for you to be able to drop your child/ren off and get to work in your real job on time, plus working longer at the other side for you to finish work and get back to collect them. But she now needs to finish at the same time as you do, and that's an issue? Why is it okay for you to finish at 5pm and not her @WhatFreshHellisThese ?

Bilboben · 09/01/2025 19:50

What is wrong with you that you assume everyone should play by your needs. If people cannot you the service you want move on.

croydon15 · 09/01/2025 19:52

I also agree with you OP that 5.00 pm is early as lots of people finish at 5.00 pm and therefore 5.30 is a more reasonable time, of course CM can dictate whichever time they want the children collected but it's making life even more difficult for parents.

Nope that's pubs that don't check their gas properly, shit or running out gas always equals flat drinks.
We do have Pepsi max and Diet Pepsi on draught, but we also have ginger beer, we have dandelion and burdock, we have bottles of coke and diet coke, loads of juice, as well as Heineken, Guinness and Gordon's zero. We're now looking at getting Appletise and some zero alcohol peroni.

I actually check our lemonade and pepsi gun to make sure it's fizzy, can't stand a pub that serves flat warm drinks.

Sunhatweather · 09/01/2025 20:02

Oh yay! We found the only person in the world with an actual REAL job 😁🎉 🙄
Or get other childcare or a nanny, OP.

Exactly!

To be honest, operators like me hate the lazy lot who don't sort their bar out. We've spent about £30k so far to turn ours around (it was a drug den before, mates thought we were mad) and everyone now comments how clean it is, how the beer tastes crisp and cold, how it always smells lovely here and it's well stocked.

I clean and tidy every single morning, check our lines, DH cleans them once a week, everything is always available and nice. If I'm expecting money to cross the bar, you have to make people want to be here. It's still hard (18 hour days and we've yet to take on staff) but it's what we have to do.

I'm glad there's still people happy to defend us!

That was covered on the 1st or 2nd page. Going to see one tomorrow and another next week. Both do until 6pm

It does make life more difficult. Before children l assumed 600 or 630pm was the norm

I’m impressed by your IT skills that you know my working hours and schedule for every week. From what l know then l work just as many hours as the childminder if not more. It’s her who wants to finish work at 5pm. If it was up to me then l would work until 6pm

A 'real job' wow. I wouldn't be handing you another contract to sign, I'd happily be getting rid!

I took it to mean a full on, full time job.

Mama3737 · 09/01/2025 21:08

@Sharptonguedwoman like... childminding?

Absolutely like childminding but I didn’t think OP was being derogatory, just that she couldn’t change her hours.

Exactly, l can’t keep on changing my hours. This is only a couple of months after changing my hours to accommodate the Childminder. I asked why it wasn’t mentioned then but didn’t get a proper explanation. I can’t change my hours every other month, my workplace have been accommodated and understanding but that can’t last forever

Sympathies. I used to work in a pub once upon a time and it’s hard work. I also used to live 6 doors down from a pub which l loved (great for Christmas Day as l could still cook lunch whilst at the pub, as it was a 2 minute walk). There were some NIMBY’s who lived on the road who couldn’t grasp the pub had been there long than them (think 50+ years) so why should it vanish when they turned up living there as they didn’t like living on the same road as a pub. So would try to stir stuff up for the landlord 🙄

If it’s any consolation l would LOVE a trip to the pub right now. Dry January is very over rated
