How would you pronounce the 'name' Eieoie?

Irish names are, for the most part, spelt pretty phonetically. As with all other languages, Irish phonetics are not the same as English phonetics so I have no idea why you would expect Irish words or names to be pronounced according to English phonetics. Would you say the same for an Italian or German word/name?

That’s why I said ‘to my English eyes’ - did you not understand what I meant? Maybe I should have said ‘English-speaking…’

No, I wouldn’t say the same about a German or Italian name, since I did A level German, and having studied it for a while I do understand Italian spelling/pronunciation.
If you’d said Norwegian or Finnish, OTOH….

Choccyscofffy · 07/01/2025 10:42

Owie. Like my little niece used to say ‘I did an owie’

ABigBarofChocolate · 07/01/2025 10:42

I'd pronounce it eh-o-way

It’s not Irish.
Irish names are phonetic in the Irish language but difficult if you don’t speak it. Can’t think of any that don’t have consonants though.

I really wouldn’t know how to pronounce Eieoie, but I’d ask.

It is no more difficult than any other language if you don't speak it...

I understood exactly what you meant.

For some reason Irish names get ridiculed on MN for being "unpronounceable" to the English, predominantly monoglot, ears/eyes.

Well I googled It! I E O

Proof that Google is not always right. It has to have an we sound at the end like Melodie.

But a heck of a burden for a child.

Choccyscofffy · 07/01/2025 10:47

The Sun have already mocked the name based on a Reddit thread

CurlewKate · 07/01/2025 10:47

If it's a name from a culture I don't know, then however I was told. Otherwise Aioli.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 07/01/2025 10:47

Here to say this but too slow 🤣🤣

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/01/2025 10:50

Good lord! Is it Irish? If it’s used anywhere other than its home country I would say the parents really don’t like their child. I literally have no idea how you would say that! If I saw it written, I would just ask the person how they say it.

Choccyscofffy · 07/01/2025 10:50

Weyohweyoh · 07/01/2025 10:48

Hopefully they’ll name you something else as well.

HugoYorway · 07/01/2025 10:51

'How do you say your first name, please?'

CurlewKate · 07/01/2025 10:51

@OchonAgusOchonOh "For some reason Irish names get ridiculed on MN for being "unpronounceable" to the English, predominantly monoglot, ears/eyes"

They shouldn't, of course, be ridiculed. But they will be mispronounced. It's impossible for monoglot English people to even make an educated guess about Irish pronunciation in a way the might be able to about Italian or French names.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 07/01/2025 10:51

dick!

Namerequired · 07/01/2025 10:52

There’s not a right way, it’s not a name surely?

CurlewKate · 07/01/2025 10:53

@HugoYorway "'How do you say your first name, please?'"

Of course. But would you enjoy answering that question for the rest of your life? We chose an English transliteration of our ds's Irish name for that very reason.
