Ee-oh-ee.
But perhaps it’s one of those Irish names whose pronunciation (to my English eyes anyway) bears no relation to how it’s spelt.

Edited

Irish names are, for the most part, spelt pretty phonetically. As with all other languages, Irish phonetics are not the same as English phonetics so I have no idea why you would expect Irish words or names to be pronounced according to English phonetics. Would you say the same for an Italian or German word/name?

PreferMyAnimals · 07/01/2025 10:02

Eye-oh-ee. After some thought. I admit my first instinct was no idea followed by thoughts about Old MacDonald e i e i o. That's a thought I'd keep to myself if I met a person with that name though. If I were a teacher I'd ask to make sure I got it right.

musicforthesoul · 07/01/2025 10:07

Ee-oh-ee?

Would be a complete guess.

randoname · 07/01/2025 10:07

Bob

SemperIdem · 07/01/2025 10:09

Yes, you are correct.

Saschka · 07/01/2025 10:10

I don’t like the threads where people take the piss out of various “unpronounceable” foreign names and/or variant spellings, but I do not believe that is an actual name that any child has ever been given.

It is either Old MacDonald, or a bad Scrabble hand.

SpringleDingle · 07/01/2025 10:10

Ey-o-ee?

Maboscelar · 07/01/2025 10:11

Ee-ooh-ee. But honestly I'd ask or Google.

Thesheerrelief · 07/01/2025 10:12

Eee eye eee eye oh

catsoop · 07/01/2025 10:13

Probably wouldn't bother even trying. Just give them a swerve. 😂

Agree with this. Welsh is much the same, in being a pretty phonetic language, but English speakers seem to expect Irish/Welsh phonics to mirror English phonics, which they do not. Because they are their own languages.

I have no grasp of the Irish language but do broadly speaking understand how to pronounce a lot of Irish names. Mostly by working out the phonics in names so I get that certain letters together make particular sounds etc.

randomchap · 07/01/2025 10:14

Like i was yodeling

PreferMyAnimals · 07/01/2025 10:15

For those wondering, according to what I found on Google, it's pronounced Ay-oi-uh.

This!!! There’s no V or K for example used in the Irish language so these sounds are pronounced using other letters. V would be BH or MH for example. That other post implies that there’s something wrong with the spelling of those names when infact. Nope they’re Irish names derived from the Irish alphabet

Kaminari · 07/01/2025 10:17

Eyowie
