Parking issue

Rick1985 · 05/01/2025 09:22

I’m writing this post to establish if i am
being unreasonable by wanting simple (ish) access to my driveway without having to drive forwards and backwards multiple times to avoid hitting the parked van. I appreciate this isn’t a serious matter but more a frustrating one given the selfishness of the owner, who could easily park it outside his own property on his double driveway. Instead he’d rather inconvenience others. I’ve referred this to the local authorities and they will get back to me in due course. The company aren't interested as we’ve talked to the owner and they’ve said it’s a neighbourhood issue. Well, of course but it involves property of yours ! Also, if emergency services want access to our elderly neighbour to the right, they’ll never get through. Interested in sensible comments only. Thanks

If it’s a public highway, he can park where he likes really (obviously excluding yellow lines and anything similar to that)

BoobyDazzler · 05/01/2025 09:52

You must be a pretty shocking driver if you’re having difficulty with parking there.

Itisjustmyopinion · 05/01/2025 09:52

Unless your photo is not reflective of reality, there is loads of room for you to get out

Yes inconsiderate parking is annoying but I don’t see it being that much of an issue in this case going by your photo

EdgeofSeventy · 05/01/2025 09:53

Great advertising for their company @Rick1985 .
Parking on a corner is the problem, not whether you can manoeuvre around him I think.

itsgettingweird · 05/01/2025 09:53

Why when OP has a drive they can park on as demonstrated in the photo?

OP said he also has a drive he could park on.

So I don't see why if him causing an issue is ok because it's legal they same can't be applied to the OP?

JazzHandsYeah · 05/01/2025 09:53

I can’t believe you actually called the number on the van to complain about its parking.
From the photo, I can’t see what the issue is, apart from it being too close to the corner. There’s plenty of room.

I appreciate that I can still “get out” but not without difficulty. Emergency services if needed next door - can’t “get in” though.

Can't they drive over your dropped kerb? Or is it the turning circle? Might be worth asking your local fire station if they could do a drive by at some point and check out the situation.

sushibelt · 05/01/2025 09:55

I think if you're going to use a photo to complain about it you should use one without your cars on your drive or you are just showing that you can still access your drive

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 05/01/2025 09:57

Unless your photo is very misleading I can't fathom why you find it hard to get out nor why ambulance and police at least can't get through. Fire engine might not they're pretty big where I am.

GuineaPigWig · 05/01/2025 09:57

Interested in sensible comments only. Thanks

Have you had any responses yet that you deem sensible, OP? 🤣🤣

Fire engines are quite important

Inertia · 05/01/2025 09:58

I can see why it’s awkward- looks like there’s a telegraph pole on the left so it’s not a case of just swinging around the van.

Can you park your car in that spot first? It might just be a case of breaking the habit.

mitogoshigg · 05/01/2025 09:58

From the photo I can't see the issue, similar room to many car parks and more than from my parking spot

Onthefarsideoftheworld · 05/01/2025 09:58

They should not be parked within 10 metres of a junction…Highway Code rule .

DDivaStar · 05/01/2025 09:58

I honestly can't see the issue. I have a similar set up with a much narrower shared drive. Always cars or sometimes a van parked opposite, yes I mutter under my breath when they're parked awkwardly but this is just one of those things.

Rick1985 · 05/01/2025 09:59

I never said that I “struggled” - when the black car to the right is driven in (it’s an EV, and requires charging via a tethered cable) with the lamppost to the right (when reversing and mine to the left) it’s problematic getting out without a multiple point manoeuvre. That’s the context, but appreciate your contribution 🥴.

If you don't struggle and it's just a bit of a pain in the arse then I don't think it's going to go anywhere. Your only issue here is the whole parking on a corner thing, and the fire engine which may or may not be a problem as most of them have quite long hoses.

Rick1985 · 05/01/2025 10:00

A few but then I remembered we left the EU and had. Conservative government for 14 years so I expected nothing less.

OP posts:
Onthefarsideoftheworld · 05/01/2025 10:00

I can see that the lamppost will make it more difficult to manoeuvre

Pumpkincozynights · 05/01/2025 10:02

Why doesn’t he park on his own driveway? That’s the question. Is it his house? Or does it belong to someone else and he hasn’t declared that he lives there?
I can’t think of another reason why he would just to park on the corner of a junction.

toomuchfaff · 05/01/2025 10:02

So I wouldn't approach it from what you want, but what the van is doing wrong.

The van looks like it's parked too close to the junction, so might impeded other road users and its parked on the curb - in my area it's illegal to park on the curb if it prohibits prams, pushchairs, wheelchairs from using the pavement, , meaning they have to go into the road to pass.

Ergo also the progression of emergency vehicles; think fire engine vs ambulance. Again I think this is a council issue vs police.

Inconsiderate prick when all said and done, think that if they can't see it then it's OK. Have you asked them to move it somewhere else?

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 05/01/2025 10:03

He is parked illegally as he shouldn't be parked on the bend.

That said if you can't get your car on your drive with the space you have shown in the picture you should probably consider some additional driving lessons that are focused on reversing.

Charlotte120221 · 05/01/2025 10:04

What did the driver say when you asked him not to park there?

Rick1985 · 05/01/2025 10:05

Correct. The reason he doesn’t is his girlfriend parks her car there too and I guess it would be considered right but change the layout of the driveway. I’ve always maintained politeness and courtesy, and what’s the problem in phoning the employer? It’s their asset. THANKS to those who understand what sensible means.

OP posts:
mitogoshigg · 05/01/2025 10:05

As for how close to the junction it is, that rule in the Highway Code falls under a "do not" section so not legally enforceable on it own but can be used as a broader case. Here everyone parks wherever they can including opposite junctions, no tickets ever
