Absolutely shit scared about the future in the UK?

Name changed - I’m genuinely terrified by the hate, division and atmosphere here right now, online and spilling over on the ‘the real world’. I’m scared by how quickly things are changing, and just how much influence the US/Elon Musk/Reform+supporters are having. I’m scared of what the actual point of it all is - what’s the endgame? And what’s the solution? Why is no one protesting/rising up from the other way? Do people generally agree with all this?

I’m in no way a minority (white, female, 30s), I’m not super left, I have one little boy and I’m so scared for his future. I don’t want to live somewhere so intolerant with this constant atmosphere of distrust and something getting ready to blow.

What’s the general consensus? Is this what the people of the U.K. want?

If people were able to afford a very basic quality of life they might not be so quick to pick on people when they're being offered endless support from a country they've never lived in nor contributed to. People who are struggling believe that we have limited resources and a LOT of them are being diahed our to whoever turns up seemingly in need, and they're not wrong.

oh. Wait …
OP, I'm older than you, and more relaxed. I feel things go in cycles. Social media is not helpful

I'm also old and think that things go in cycles but I think we are headed for war and social unrest. This has also been cyclical. We are due for a period of unrest. We've had unpresidented peace since WW2. I'm in the we are fucked camp.

I agree with this.

I lived in Oz for years and people would always ask me “isn’t it super racist there”.

Possibly but not that I noticed particularly. But the Australian economy is doing very well and so are most people comparatively speaking.

It’s easier to find and blame a scapegoat when most people are struggling in life.

My cleaner (who is soon to be fired) had a rant last time she was here about alleged asylum seekers and immigrants and how they are given everything and talking about her woes (she is also an immigrant but like many white immigrants does not see herself as one.)

I tactfully pointed out some of the reasons she maybe struggling in life none of which are linked to immies….

Why do you keep contrasting “western” within “Muslim”?

Plenty of western men are Muslim.
Plenty of non western countries are not Muslim.
There are countries with huge issues with violence against women and girls that aren’t Muslim majority countries (such as India).

You don’t have concerns about women and girls. You have a bugbear with Muslims.

Just say that.

I agree with you about India.

I have the impression you haven’t travelled or lived much in Islamic countries.

Not your fault, of course and in many ways I envy you your ignorance about the profound cultural differences we are discussing here.

I have experienced and witnessed sexual assault by men utterly confident they are supported in that act by their culture and government. I came to the UK thinking I’d escape it.

We have now imported that culture in concerning numbers to Europe. Those men are standing in local elections; they are as likely to respect women’s rights as I am to fly.

it will give you nightmares, but I suggest you follow the links, C&P some of the languages you don’t speak into an app, and educate yourself on the true dangers posed by a culture that inherently believes women and girls are worth less.

And this is why people absolutely love the wealthy left-wing middle class, in general, and don't think that they sneeringly look down on the white working class at all.

"Ghastly woman", as Gordon Brown so famously and unfortunately said.

Yes. How awful I am for looking down on racists and xenophobes and people who blame others for their own poor life choices.

Ghastly.

Also “wealthy”?

“Left-wing”?

Whut?

Surely it should have been “Islington elite” for full bonus points?! 😂

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 05/01/2025 11:52

Reading this thread it sounds like you’re talking about a different country from where I live in Southeast London we’re supposed to be a poor area but I don’t see any of the crap that you’re talking about.

So you're happy to make your own life easier using a cleaner, who you then judge as having made a "poor life choice"?

Did she say anything actually racist or did she just express dismay at immigration levels and spending priorities?

Upstartled · 05/01/2025 11:55

Of course we have immigrants in this country who think current levels of immigration are unsustainable. Are you completely ignorant of the scale of net migration increase over the last five/ ten years?

Cornishclio · 05/01/2025 13:44

I hate everything that comes out of Farages, Musks and Trumps mouths but we are removed from it and they don't affect our day to day life. It is amplified by social media and other media outlets. I have come off X (formerly twitter) and have no intention of visiting the US who have no business in UK politics but beyond that what can we do? As long as we don't spout the evil that spills out their mouths and look after our communities I think that is all we can do. I am certainly not traipsing up to London for a protest which is usually taken over for others selfish interests.

I agree. I also think protests are generally a complete waste of time and often have the opposite effect of what the protesters want, as they tend to turn regular people against the annoying and sometimes destructive protesters.

because our population continues to grow through immigration, making it impossible to ever build enough affordable houses.
the population has also grown because people are living longer…
But these are our home grown problem. We have to deal with them. They were born here and live here.
**
We don’t have to support the rest of the world as well.

Thousands upon thousands of immigrants work caring for “our” elderly because “our” people feel such work is beneath them.
If those hard working, low paid workers upped and left, our elderly (and our NHS) would be completely stuffed.

We are not supporting them. They are supporting us.

Yes she did say racist and xenophobic things hence why she is now an ex cleaner (which she is not aware of yet.)

I have no idea what me using a cleaner has to do with abhoring xenophobes and those who blame immigrants and foreigners for their struggles in life instead of looking at their own personal choices.

When those immigrants are part of that number it’s a little bemusing.

It's not bemusing at all. People who moved here in say 2001 when total net migration totalled numbers lower than we now see in illegal migration alone, and are seeing the pressure on housing and squeezed local services, might well be concerned with how things are going. Is there any reason why they shouldn't be worried, more so than anyone else?

Don't worry, there's plenty of demand for cleaners. I don't think she'll struggle without your help and lady bountiful routine.

Musk has just thrown Farage under the bus saying he should be replaced as leader of reform, think because he hasn’t backed him on the Tommy Robinson issue. In the independent. Farage cannot see anything as his face is covered in shit from having his head up Trumps & Musks arses. Karma

I've been unsettled since Brexit but extremely worried since the summer riots. I find it very, very frightening. I feel like we're sleepwalking into something terrible. I feel like people can't see what's happening. They just get riled up by what Tommy Robinson/Elon Misk etc say abd they don't see the big picture.
On a positive note, I do believe there are enough people that can see through it. They can see what's happening and they won't accept us sleepwalking into fascism.
By the way OP, I've been going to antiracism protests since the summer. It does make a difference. Follow SUTR (stand up to racism) in your area and start protesting.

There's videos of it happening in Egypt (I posted one of three videos from that link) and it was about 15 years ago it happened to Lara Logan the US reporter in Egypt, and it was already well documented years before that.

The Lara Logan case made me feel absolutely sick to my stomach. I remember at the time some people minimising it saying she was "only" groped but I read the details, and it was a severe, sustained mass sexual assault of the worst kind.

It's horrible to know that this is something that women are suffering on a regular basis, and horrible to know that it's now spread to countries that were previously much safer for women.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that feels this way. Lara Logan was only one of a fair few journalists that this happened too - there was also a French one, an English one, an Arabic one, and I think a Dutch one. And then the many other thousands of women, some as young as seven years old.

Reading back my posts does make me feel uncomfortable tbh as I genuinely don't have an issue with anybody of any ethnicity/religion etc. Well, not specifically based on those factors alone. However, I think it's quite clear that we've experienced a rise in certain types of crimes that were already fairly common in other countries and it's unsurprising when you consider the increased levels of immigration we've experienced from men from said cultures.

I don't think it's rocket science to say that if we rehoused all the men convicted of DV in one town that we might see an increase in DV in that town. Likewise, if you rehomed all the repeat offenders of football violence in one city then you might see an increase in that specific type of violence in that city. In this case, we're talking about men from countries where there have been 500 documented mass sexual assaults within just a two year reference period. I don't think it's particularly surprising to see an increase in these types of crimes with an increasing number of these individuals arriving in our society and being poorly integrated (one of the key factors identified by the German government once they finally acknowledged that 1200 women had been sexually assaulted in one night).

And the reaction of the authorities in sweeping it under the carpet for fear of being seen as intolerant is exactly the type of reaction we see from people in response to posts like this. I feel there are a lot of parallels with the trans debate in that anybody who's been outspoken about that will likely have faced objection from people admonishing them for being 'transphobic' or a bigot. The more you beat the drum about that, the more people say "god, you really have a problem with trans people don't you?". But when faced with people who will happily bury their heads in the sand the only thing you can do is stick to your guns.

Somewhat ironic though that the largest anti-racism protest took place in Walthamstow - where a few weeks previously the Labour MP's office was vandalised with a hammer by a pro-Gaza protester and malicious leaflets distributed;

@Clavinova @SallyWD wasn't it at a Walthamstow protest where this Labour councillor suggested to the crowd that the 'right-wing' should have their 'throats cut'? www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cgrj75yx2q0o.amp

He said this at the same time that people were getting fast-tracked to prison for tweets. Yet his hearing got put off for months... not even sure if he's been to court yet.

I've also noticed in London that the 'anti-racism' marches are quite liberal with the antisemitism, to the extent that Jewish people are threatened and unsafe in their own city.
