Friends awful baby name

ThisIcyHare · 01/01/2025 16:26

My best friend is due to have a baby soon, they are having a girl and she has been talking baby names with me, which feels super special. She has got a few very lovely traditional girly names, and a couple of more unusual choices, but not ‘offensive’. They are names I would expect from her. However, she has one absolutely terrible name, that actually just feels very cruel. It would be bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names. It’s not that I wouldn’t choose it, it’s just crazy stupid and the child will be ridiculed by peers and adults. Some of her choices are genuinely wonderful, but I’m so worried she will madly choose this one awful name, I can’t say anything can I?!

Intention that seems a good solid name, lol. Hmmm or maybe Radiance. Radiance Jones has a nice ring to it 😂

Working in customer services I've come across some weird names. GodsGift & Tuppence were the most unusual. Surnames now that's another level 😂

Every time I met or otherwise encountered Radiance, I would be constantly hearing inside my head...

"And how are we today, Sir? Radiant, Sir; Radiant!!"

If there's a concrete reason I'd tell her (e.g. "did you know that means penis in X language?") but otherwise I think I wouldn't to be honest, unless you're very close.

Ha ha! Or make up some obscure language and tell her that anyway. 😀

If I was going to choose that kind of name, instead of Faith, Hope and Charity I’d go for something like Practicality, Serendipity or Nonchalance.

Nonchalance... or Meh for short.

Be honest and say how awful the name is and that the child will get teased. At the same time, praise her other choices and hope she chooses one of them 🤷‍♀️ Remind her that she’s not just naming a baby, she’s naming a human being who will have to use that name at work/school etc. My opinion is that it’s better if the name is a bit boring, let the personality shine through.

It’s never inevitable that a child will get teased. It depends on how other children get raised.

Oh, yes XXuglynameXX would be a great second or third name to XXgorgeousnameXX.

It’s not a ‘made up name’, it’s a word that you’d use, a bit like Integrity. That’s the closest I think I can get without saying what it is

As in honesty/having strong moral principles or as in being of sound construction? The former seems in keeping with various names like faith/charity etc I guess. The latter seems weird

NalafromtheLionKing · 01/01/2025 21:53

I think you’re being harsh. Integriteigh is a lovely name 🥰. If she has twins, she can call the second Honesteigh.

I have triplets called Independence, Discovery and Potential. Everyone tells me what beautiful names they are.

MirandaBlu · 01/01/2025 21:55

You say in your OP that the name you dislike is bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names - so WORSE than something that takes a word with negative connotations and gives it a "creative" spelling that does not derive from any traditional form of the word in any known language or culture. I think it's pretty straightforward to offer criticism of names that are also commonly-used English-language words with negative meanings - Tragedy, Felony, Rubella, etc. - however they are spelled.

Then you say it's like Integrity - a virtue name, as others have noted, although one that is unusual at the moment (and might have absurd connotations for South Park fans). Historically, socially, and linguistically, Integrity is a far cry from "Tragedeigh"!

Regardless of the name and why it's "bad", can you at least articulate TO YOUR FRIEND what you feel is wrong with the name/why YOU would not choose/use it? You've said that you value the trust she's placed in you by telling you the names she's thinking about; why not reciprocate that trust by being honest (although tactful) with her? If she comes back with "it's my husband's grandmother's name!" or "it's the name of someone I knew/met/read about in x context" or even "I love it/we chose it because of y ..." then you're in a better position to help her without having offended her.

I don't want to go down the American standards path if you've America!!!'d out of the blue - but if it is relevant (friend or baby's other parent is from the USA or has background/heritage there and/or they live there), specific names can feel quite a bit different even in different anglophone countries and there are some different historical and social considerations around naming in the USA specifically. But your friend should be able to keep all of that in mind and still consider your feedback -- maybe not as a "no" to the name but as a consideration that might move it down the list.

(Edited because apparently the interface can't handle an underscore.)

Fair enough; but it's their constantly ignored brother Dave that I feel most sorry for.

Liking the list but let’s change Probitie to Analprobiteigh and include Gertrude in Rectitude to make Gerectitudeigh.

I can’t say the name just in case she sees it, it’s too obvious. I’m sorry! Hate being that person! It’s just outrageously bad.

If it’s really that bad I would gently say ‘you know I’m really not keen on Cherry-Anne, it reminds me of xxx’ and give some sort of example. Then you know you did at least try to avoid potential disaster.
I know a girl with a name she hates and she was angry at her parents for many years.
