Friends awful baby name

My best friend is due to have a baby soon, they are having a girl and she has been talking baby names with me, which feels super special. She has got a few very lovely traditional girly names, and a couple of more unusual choices, but not ‘offensive’. They are names I would expect from her. However, she has one absolutely terrible name, that actually just feels very cruel. It would be bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names. It’s not that I wouldn’t choose it, it’s just crazy stupid and the child will be ridiculed by peers and adults. Some of her choices are genuinely wonderful, but I’m so worried she will madly choose this one awful name, I can’t say anything can I?!

I got the name, girl: Eternity

That would be daft but not toe-curlingly terrible.

It’s not a ‘made up name’, it’s a word that you’d use, a bit like Integrity. That’s the closest I think I can get without saying what it is

Prosperity?
Blessing?
Admire?

One of my friends got quite wild with the name ideas when she was pregnant and had a list of potential names I can’t remember them all (there were a lot !) but I remember some! (She won’t mind as we laugh about it now)
Amberleigh-maison
Juneberry-fleur
Prairie-rose
Wynter-faerie
Roseabella-mae

When she had her baby she called her Emily !

ToWhitToWhoo · 01/01/2025 21:06

Reality? As in former NSA translator Reality Winner. She lived up to her name, ending up in prison for illegal whistleblowing about Russian interference, There was a film about her

Viviennemary · 01/01/2025 21:07

Nobody can judge unless you say what the name is. Bit silly.

FizzyBisto · 01/01/2025 21:10

Effluence?
Balderdashina?

GrouchyKiwi · 01/01/2025 21:11

I read a (totally ace) series of books where the main character is called Integrity, Tegs for short, and I thought it made a cool name. For a character in a book.

<misses point of thread>

Teresa Palmer got in before her on the Prairie front. Just googled and she called her daughter Prairie Moon. The other kid is called Poet Lake. (tragic that I know that).

My mother was an Alice, as was her mother. My sister gave her daughter Alice as a middle name, to much maternal delight, without mentioning that it was done to please her husband's very ancient granny. There used to be a lot of them about!

I have an Alice DD.

Always thought she might switch to a cooler sounding Ali but not so far, although she has had friends who shortened it.

Not named for anyone although later found out my Irish granny had a sister Alice.

Although my mother died a couple of years before she was born I could still hear her voice i. My head "oh ah do 'ate fancy made oop names". So trad it had to be.

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 01/01/2025 21:15

If it really is that awful, I would tell her. It’s not like you’re saying you hate her actual baby, just one of a few possible names. She might thank you later on. If you’re very close, I doubt she’d let your views on a name ruin the friendship. I wouldn’t

I am guessing the name is Chastity, in which case I would tell her it’s opening the girl up for a lot of teasing. She might be prepared to face that down like “a boy called Sue”, the song by Johnny cash, it might make someone mentally strong to handle that much teasing but would her child choose it herself?

Is it 'like a ship called D***y', by any chance Op?

In which case I agree with you.

Oh I could just listen to that now.
I’m sniding off with YouTube. 🤣🤣

Here are some alternatives to “integrity” that could work as a name:
1. Honor
2. Truth
3. Virtue
4. Grace
5. Noble
6. Faith
7. Justice
8. Credence
9. Valor
10. Verity

Each carries a sense of integrity while also feeling unique and name-worthy.

chat gpt…

is it virtue op? Cos you gotta do the right thing and tell her 😅

ijustneedtokeepbreathing · 01/01/2025 21:24

Is is Charisma?

Nah, you can't say anything op. Just keep praising the non-bonkers options.

RavenQueen · 01/01/2025 21:27

Intention that seems a good solid name, lol. Hmmm or maybe Radiance. Radiance Jones has a nice ring to it 😂

Working in customer services I've come across some weird names. GodsGift & Tuppence were the most unusual. Surnames now that's another level 😂

Gowlett · 01/01/2025 21:29

Jimberleigh… Ha ha!

is it Lolita?

Flatbellyfella · 01/01/2025 21:29

Hymen Klitouris Jones is my guess .

lastgreat · 01/01/2025 21:31

Is it Virtue?

Birdscratch · 01/01/2025 21:31

Is it also a plant?

The problem is that at least half of those sound like plausible model names for gas combi boilers.

I used to work in an aircraft hanger which had a Tannoy. One of the guys there was called Jim Deville and the other was Harry Cowey, so whenever they were called to the office it sounded like Ginger Bill and Hari Kari lol

Birdscratch · 01/01/2025 21:36

If I was going to choose that kind of name, instead of Faith, Hope and Charity I’d go for something like Practicality, Serendipity or Nonchalance.

outerspacepotato · 01/01/2025 21:38

Please don't take me back to the nightmare time when Ashley (and all the special variants of) Nicole ruled the land (US).

Keroppi · 01/01/2025 21:40

An Australian Love Island type influencer has named her twins Locket and Poetry. People freaked out but it is what it is

I would say nothing negative over message tbh! Lots of people have strange baby name ideas whilst pg
