Friends awful baby name

ThisIcyHare · 01/01/2025 16:26

My best friend is due to have a baby soon, they are having a girl and she has been talking baby names with me, which feels super special. She has got a few very lovely traditional girly names, and a couple of more unusual choices, but not ‘offensive’. They are names I would expect from her. However, she has one absolutely terrible name, that actually just feels very cruel. It would be bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names. It’s not that I wouldn’t choose it, it’s just crazy stupid and the child will be ridiculed by peers and adults. Some of her choices are genuinely wonderful, but I’m so worried she will madly choose this one awful name, I can’t say anything can I?!

She's going to call it whatever she likes, my friend asked in passing about a name that has no family connection etc if I liked it and I said a less polite version of 'gosh no! that's awful , why that name?' she called the child it followed by even more 'interesting' middle names.

HugoYorway · 01/01/2025 19:08

@OptimisticRealist2024 , the Welsh name is Euryn. It's a nice name and is not pronounced Ew-rin.

It’s not a ‘made up name’, it’s a word that you’d use, a bit like Integrity. That’s the closest I think I can get without saying what it is

It's a bit like those influencers who called their daughter Industry I guess (Indy for short)? It's a bit odd, but each to their own. I prefer the random word names over made-up spelling names.

BringBackWorshippingCats · 01/01/2025 19:09

Is it
honesty

unity

or

Honourableness

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 01/01/2025 19:10

I honestly don't see why you can't say: 'Friend, I love all of these names except Varucacella, which worries me because it reminds me of the foot problem and the musical instrument, and the dear girl might get teased in school. Though I agree that the actual sound of the name is lovely and I can see why you chose it. '
Wouldn't that do the trick?

Charisma? As in the actress off of Buffy?

I've not read whole thread. I have boys but considered the names Verity and also, Clemency for a girl. My DH would entertain neither and not an issue in the end anyway.

Both lovely names.

Ilikeadrink14 · 01/01/2025 19:13

I, like many others probably, plodded through this post because I was sure the poster would give the name eventually. She didn’t! I hope she is happy that she wasted so much of our time with such a pointless post. It was like getting to the last page in a book and finding someone had torn it out!
I am pretty easy-going, and it takes a lot to rile me, but this post has, with knobs on!
I have made a note of her name so I can avoid her posts in future!

AcrossthePond55 · 01/01/2025 19:14

Naming children after virtues goes back hundreds of years and a lot of those are now mainstream (Faith, Constance, Justice, etc). I can only think that either OP's friend has picked an unusual synonym for a virtue or is giving it a You-nique spelling that could be pronounced in a different way.

I can see why she doesn't want to say the actual name.

Is it Destiny?

speaking as a parent of a Faith and an Honour who is happy with my choices 😊

No it’s not, those are totally lovely and normal, this name is not normal !

Oh good lord I said in the original post I wasn’t going to because it was so unusual that it would be obvious who I was if my friend saw it! I came asking whether or not to voice an opinion/concern. Gosh people on here really think they are saving lives when it’s a waste of time being on here anyway 😂

I know someone who was thinking of calling their girl Lettice.

It was popular in the Victorian era, but you would get ripped at school now. Thankfully, she decided against it.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 01/01/2025 19:17

Oh sorry, I've just read that it's not a made up word but an abstract noun.
In that case, could you say that you think that name would a lot to live up to, and that the child might be teased by failing to live up to it? That is a genuine problem with names like Chastity, Patience etc.

UndertheseaPineappleHouse · 01/01/2025 19:18

Chastity? Purification? Immaculata?

then go away

I was once introduced to a man called Aìnus (pronounced anus)
Never has a 'nickname ' been so apt. Turns out his own mother had bestowed this upon him.
I met a baby called KiaBeetle a long time ago, the reason for said name was definitely mushrooms 🍄

I have laughed heartily at suggestions on here (& nc because Aìnus is a difficult one to hide from 😂)

This is the kind of advice I was seeking, sounds very sensible whilst also being mindful of her feelings. Thank you!

What an utterly pointless thread. Well done OP

Hugely entertaining though........is it Frances, aka Fanny ? I guess we'll never know !

I find myself agog at some of the more 'normal' names these days, some people seem to be giving birth to their great grandparents, with their Ada and Esme type names. But that's just me, having grown up with those as 'old people' names, and I know I'll get used to them.

Just waiting to meet my first little Eglantina. It's not Eglantina, is it OP?

No but I might try that on my husband next time!

I knew a Velocity once. Think her Dad was RAF. And of course, most people heard “Felicity” when introduced, not “Velocity.” I thought it was a great name!

DD was at university with a Velocity, and I think her dad was a pilot - so I guess the same one. Did her surname begin with A?

Persephone?

While we're on the classics.

A beautiful name from mythology. Usual yes but not ridiculous!
