Friends awful baby name

ThisIcyHare · 01/01/2025 16:26

My best friend is due to have a baby soon, they are having a girl and she has been talking baby names with me, which feels super special. She has got a few very lovely traditional girly names, and a couple of more unusual choices, but not ‘offensive’. They are names I would expect from her. However, she has one absolutely terrible name, that actually just feels very cruel. It would be bad even by American standards and ‘tragedeigh’ names. It’s not that I wouldn’t choose it, it’s just crazy stupid and the child will be ridiculed by peers and adults. Some of her choices are genuinely wonderful, but I’m so worried she will madly choose this one awful name, I can’t say anything can I?!

Dignity ?

Destiny?
Or...Destynee?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 01/01/2025 18:39

I find myself agog at some of the more 'normal' names these days, some people seem to be giving birth to their great grandparents, with their Ada and Esme type names. But that's just me, having grown up with those as 'old people' names, and I know I'll get used to them.

Just waiting to meet my first little Eglantina. It's not Eglantina, is it OP?

TheSquareMile · 01/01/2025 18:41

I'm wondering whether it's Chastity, one of Cher's children was given that name at birth.

OrangeQualityStreetAreTheBest · 01/01/2025 18:44

I bet its Modesty. And agree, that would be cruel.

Or as PP said, Chastity - although wasn't that a name on Emmerdale?

lightsandtunnels · 01/01/2025 18:44

Obviously you know this is noyb OP. My DCs had a couple of school friends with some absolutely crazy names, think similar to splendour and magnificent. Tbh no one batted an eyelid really apart from an initial surprise and the children - who are now adults - just had a shortened name they chose or that evolved. I'm sure it won't cause them any harm long term!
Definitely don't say anything to your friend - it might be the end of your friendship if you do!

But is it just a name you don't like and find cringey, or is it objectively horrible? If it's a name that you just really don't like or has a strange spelling but isn't offensive, e.g. Brittaneigh or Kayleigh, then leave them to it. If it's something with an obvious and horrible/ridiculous meaning, like Beanleigh or Hades, then say something.

What is the "obvious" horrible or ridiculous meaning of Beanleigh please?

DizzyDandilion · 01/01/2025 18:44

I've not read whole thread. I have boys but considered the names Verity and also, Clemency for a girl. My DH would entertain neither and not an issue in the end anyway.

Oh and just imagine when she grows and has a child it'll be.....Destiny's child. Ba ba boom

The band got their name from a book name within a Stephen King book, Misery. The book was called Destiny’s Child. About the child of someone called Destiny.

So…yeah. You’re right.

AshCrapp · 01/01/2025 18:48

If it's something like Liberty or Justice, I think that's also fine.

AlleycatMarie · 01/01/2025 18:51

Got to be Honesty?!

Whydoeseveryonewanttoaegue · 01/01/2025 18:53

ThisIcyHare · 01/01/2025 17:01

Oh no, think ‘Integrity’. That’s where this is going! I’m not badmouthing actual names!

No just American tacky ones by standard.

Reetpetitenot · 01/01/2025 18:53

Hopefully not Rectitude.

cartagenagina · 01/01/2025 18:53

I’m thinking it has to be Chastity.

Verity isn’t uncommon. Honesty is weird, but wouldn’t lead to the same outcomes as Chastity in terms of bullying potential.

CamelsForChristmas · 01/01/2025 18:54

Some of the honour type names are lovely though. Integrity- maybe not so much though. I suggested Temperance and Deliverance if our Ds1 was a DD. Crappy names for our times I agree now, but at the time I loved them. Still do, but maybe not for an actual person.

One of my friends in the throes of pregnancy hormones had Euphoria on her list. TBH I did make my thoughts gently clear. Thank heavems. She named her along the lines of Sophia in the end. And a child in my younger DS's class is called Bliss. He is a he, not a she which somehow makes it worse.

Wordau · 01/01/2025 18:54

Solidarity?

Solid for short

Brings new meaning to "do me a Solid"

nevertrustanyoneagain · 01/01/2025 18:55

I think it is Truely. One of the children on Sister Wives.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 01/01/2025 18:56

Similar to Integrity? I’m assuming it’s something like Serenity or Amity. I wouldn’t say they were awful, just so unusual that they seem very hippy dippy and may not suit the child.

Can you gently point out that the problem with virtue/word names is that the child may be the very opposite of that virtue/word and then they will have to put up with the annoyance of people mentioning it regularly (and obviously say to her that all her other choices are SO much nicer).

Or suggest if she wants a virtue name that she goes for a subtle one -for example not everyone would be aware of what Felicity and Verity mean.

CactusSammy · 01/01/2025 18:57

Modesty? Chastity?

Iloveburgerswaymorethanishould · 01/01/2025 18:58

Dignity!

ChiliFiend · 01/01/2025 18:58

Once the baby is born and has been given the name, no you cannot say anything. When she's running several names by you while pregnant, you absolutely should say something, particularly if you genuinely think the child would be ridiculed. That's your duty as a friend. Isn't that what any of us would want in her shoes?

Thoughtsonallsorts · 01/01/2025 18:58

Is it sincerity 😆

Bogginsthe3rd · 01/01/2025 18:59

ThisIcyHare · 01/01/2025 17:15

No! It’s not honour, charity, faith. It’s like Integrity.

It's Rectitude isn't it

Thoughtsonallsorts · 01/01/2025 19:01

I'd say something along the lines of that's quite nice but xxxx said it was awful, then give her reasons what do you think.
Hormones can play havoc with name choices

CactusSammy · 01/01/2025 18:57

Modesty? Chastity?
