To think dogs shouldn't be in pubs?

Orangesinthebag · 01/01/2025 09:47

Yesterday I went to the pub for an afternoon NY Eve drink and couldn't believe the number of people who brought their dog (sometimes two dogs!) with them.

Why is this such a thing now? Can't dogs be left alone any more?
A couple of the dogs were growling at each other and owners were having to drag them apart.
It happens all the time these days - pubs, cafes, restaurants, shops but only a few years ago it would have been so weird and only guide dogs were allowed into places, especially places serving food.

I love dogs but I know several people who are scared of them & find it difficult to have to encounter them everywhere these days.

Is it unreasonable to think dogs should be kept at home?

(Sorry could add a poll for some reason)

They can access the outdoors and do their business - the woods, the beach etc in line with local regs. They dont need to be inside publicly accessible places. They arent humans and shouldnt be treat as such.

Being in a cafe is not treating a dog as a human. Why do you think it is?
If an establishment allows dogs, then an owner is doing nothing wrong by taking their dog there. No amount of foot stomping on MN will change that.

loveawineloveacrisp · 01/01/2025 21:28

Loads of people love seeing my dog in the pub and pay him loads of attention. Those who don't want to just don't come near. Simples.

Just because an establishment allows dogs, it doesn’t follow that an owner is doing nothing wrong by taking their dog there. A very crowded noisy pub won’t necessarily be a good place for a responsible owner to take their dog, even if the establishment allows it.

Sadly a lot of dog owners don’t really care about their pet’s comfort as much as they claim. Every summer dog owners have to be reminded not to walk their dogs on hot pavements, or leave them inside cars.

Because cafes are for humans to sit at a table and eat and drink. Yes you can throw a bowl on the floor for Fido but that's not their purpose. It'll last as long as it lasts.

So, where do you think dogs should be?
Just at home? In a kennel?

blubberball · 01/01/2025 21:40

I go to a pub where you are allowed to sit with your dog in one area, and another area where dogs aren't allowed. Keeps everyone happy that way

Home, garden, walked and exercised outdoors. Wherever they have been for the past 2000 years. It's not as complex as you make out.

They dont belong in public indoor areas.

Yeah, I’ll carry on taking my dog to dog friendly pubs. We got for half an hour or so after a walk. If this offends then so be it.

Prefer dogs to the majority of idiotic people and their brats. I'd much prefer it if kids weren't allowed in pubs.

My dog would disagree with people who say that dogs hate shopping!
There are some occasions when I need to visit our city centre, and as my dog is with me most of the time anyway, she will tag along. She has the following as her favourite shops:

Body Shop
Lush
Fat Face
Waterstones
Tiger
Blue Banana
Mountain Warehouse.

But this is because she knows that she will get spoilt rotten by the shop assistants, and she will come away with a belly full of treats 😆

I would not take her clothes shopping though, as she is mainly white, and I wouldn't want her brushing up against clothes and leaving hair everywhere. And I think taking a dog in a supermarket is very inappropriate.

Can you even take a dog in a supermarket, what supermarkets permit that? Before Christmas a woman at my local Marks food hall was walking her dog around on am extendable lead, she was asked to leave. I'm allergic to dogs so certainly wouldn't want to go to a supermarket that allows them to wonder around so it would be helpful to know which ones?

My local pub allows dogs, but bans kids. It is great.

I went to a country pub the other week and a bloke came in on a horse and locals hardly battered an eyelid!

😂
Reminds me of dh’s cousin, whose kids had a pony that used to come in the kitchen and help itself to apples from the fruit bowl. 😂

A few country pubs always allowed it yes, then the rest of the pub population jumped on the bandwagon.

Support your local Spoons. No mutts allowed.

Never lived in the country. So you're so very wrong

Our local spoons constantly has the police in attendance and is full of drunk dicks. Dogs would probably be an improvement on their usual clientele.

Personally, I'd prefer a well-behaved dog over a badly behaved child.

Every time 😁

OP sounds like they’d be fun at parties 😳

MotherofPearl · 01/01/2025 19:24

I agree heartily OP. I find the fact that people seem unwilling or unable to leave their dogs at home, ever, extremely irritating.

Dogs are not people and the absurd veneration of dogs as human - or for some, better or more important than humans - is absurd. Dogs should be treated as dogs, not people.

And that's why my dog is asleep on the floor by my feet when I go to the pub, not standing at the bar chatting about football while downing a pint

It is annoying. I have stopped going to pubs were dogs are welcome.

JHound · 02/01/2025 02:47

Now cats should be barred from pubs and restaurants. I went to one and the owner had a cat and it kept jumping up on tables trying to eat food from customers plates.

It was gross.

Maskrosen · 02/01/2025 05:53

Pub owners want any customer they can get and don’t want to lose custom from owners with dogs. They know the large section of the population with dogs will choose dog friendly establishments over a no dogs one. All have a well behaved dog policy( sadly not a well behaved child policy)and I have never seen dogs not behaving inside pubs and restaurants. Hard to misbehave on a lead which children generally aren’t attached to.I love seeing dogs in pubs chilling and bizarrely those that allow them are normally the ones you really want to be in with a great atmosphere, good food and nice staff.

We went to a restaurant recently that was dog friendly. Had driven further so couldn’t leave dog at home, chose said place over alternatives because it was dog friendly and spent £150. It’s a no brainer! The hospitality sector is struggling, this isn’t going to change so best make the best of it in the same way the general population has to as regards children in pubs, cafes and restaurants. Dogs don’t sit at tablets with tablets at volume, push chairs into you, run around, engage in loud parenting, throw food, scream, cry…. I’d take dogs over children in pubs any day.

YourZanyNewt · 01/01/2025 10:10

Well behaved dogs should be allowed in shops and pubs etc.. Like people it’s the odd few grumpy dogs that tarnish and spoil it for everyone… Our dog has seizures, so can’t be left, but has always been in cafes/ pubs since he was a puppy. He’ll just sit by the table and ‘smile’ at strangers- always gets 100% positive attention from strangers. Would much prefer a well behaved pooch to share a meal with rather than a feral toddler 😂

What about a “feral” dog? There’s a lot of them about too.
