To think dogs shouldn't be in pubs?

Orangesinthebag · 01/01/2025 09:47

Yesterday I went to the pub for an afternoon NY Eve drink and couldn't believe the number of people who brought their dog (sometimes two dogs!) with them.

Why is this such a thing now? Can't dogs be left alone any more?
A couple of the dogs were growling at each other and owners were having to drag them apart.
It happens all the time these days - pubs, cafes, restaurants, shops but only a few years ago it would have been so weird and only guide dogs were allowed into places, especially places serving food.

I love dogs but I know several people who are scared of them & find it difficult to have to encounter them everywhere these days.

Is it unreasonable to think dogs should be kept at home?

(Sorry could add a poll for some reason)

Had we gone to the pub last night would have had to take the dogs due to the fireworks at midnight.

I would far rather leave them at home but my younger one is terrified of them.

Kitkatfiend31 · 01/01/2025 16:11

YA definitely NBU!

Tara336 · 01/01/2025 16:15

@5431go thank you I haven't ever thought about taking my dog in the Dr's as I always have DH (or DD) for support. My dog is just with me on the times I go out for a coffee and have to walk alone to meet a friend which clearly is heinous crime according to Satsuma despite me repeating the same thing over and over again the whys and wherefore of me doing so. I shall be careful to wrap DDog in clingfilm prior to leaving the house in future that way anyone within a mile radius with extreme allergies won't drop down dead because I dared to leave the house for a coffee and catch up 🤣.

YeOldeGreyhound · 01/01/2025 16:58

YABU
Dogs have been in pubs since forever. It is not a new thing at all, and this "dogs are everywhere" hyperbole is ridiculous.
Believe it or not, badly behaved dogs are annoying, even to us dog owners.
My dog is the type to snooze under a table and not bother a soul. She comes on holiday with me, so she has to come into pubs with me.

What is annoying, is people moaning about dogs being in dog friendly places.

Agree. Piss off with them. We don’t all love the dog like you do. Last time I went to a pub I had to wipe up slobber from a water bowl before someone slipped in it. Just yuk

Nah, pubs allow them and always have plus most people are happy or don’t mind. Landlords love it as dog walkers are a reliable income stream. So why don’t you piss off and find somewhere else - we’re all happy and won’t miss you.

Which proves my point

What point might that be? That it’s goood for pub profits so landlords allow dogs? That it has always been so? That we’re not going to be out off by a few po-faced self entitled whingers?

Off you trot and find an alternative establishment that better suits your preferences since you so disapprove of the house policy.

I agree with you OP.

YANBU and I say this as a dog lover. Why are dogs EVERYWHERE these days? Seriously ridiculous entitled behaviour. I love dogs but have a young child who is scared of them. This fear was actually increased by an idiot owner taking their darling dog out shopping and it attempting to go for my then 2 year old daughter!

Peolle saying go somewhere that doesn't allow them/sit away from them need to realise you'd never leave the house if you avoided all dog accepting places. Also it's not easy to avoid sitting near them in restaurants etc. We've often had to put up with it as it's the only table left. Just leave the dog at home it is a DOG not a child FFS.

Why can't you get a babysitter? I did when mine were young or we accepted that we couldn't go out until summer came and we could sit in a beer garden. If a child is scared of dogs then its not acceptable to take them into that environment. It's also unreasonable and entitled to think that anyone should just accomodate your needs by giving up a right to their own wishes.. Pubs are not suutable places for children but well behaved dogs have always been welcome.

I agree heartily OP. I find the fact that people seem unwilling or unable to leave their dogs at home, ever, extremely irritating.

Dogs are not people and the absurd veneration of dogs as human - or for some, better or more important than humans - is absurd. Dogs should be treated as dogs, not people.

TeenLifeMum · 01/01/2025 19:26

All our local pubs are dog friendly and dogs are really well behaved ime. So much nicer than smoking in pubs, now that was antisocial.

Meltedwelly · 01/01/2025 19:26

Fucking stinky dogs in human areas. I blame lockdown.

What for decades? My dog went to the pub with my dad when I was young

My great aunt and uncle owned a pub their entire adult lives and always had a pub dog. So no. It's nothing to do with lockdown

A few country pubs always allowed it yes, then the rest of the pub population jumped on the bandwagon.

Support your local Spoons. No mutts allowed.

RM2013 · 01/01/2025 19:43

I wouldn’t take my dog to a shop or a busy restaurant. Mostly because he’s still young and easily excitable and I’m very aware many people are nervous of dogs or have allergies. We have taken him to a pub garden because we want to socialize him but we do leave him at home if going for a family meal for example. I might pop in to a local pub for a drink after a dog walk but we don’t take him everywhere with us

LakieLady · 01/01/2025 20:07

Banning dogs from pubs might not be popular in areas where they rely on holiday trade.

Most dog-friendly holiday cottages don't allow you to leave the dogs unaccompanied in the cottage, and you definitely can't leave them on their own in a tent, or in a car if the weather's warm. Holiday makers have to take them with them if they go out to eat, so they wouldn't go to pubs for meals and the pubs would lose a lot of business.

When I had dogs, we used to take them to pubs and they would mostly just lie under the table and snooze, and not bother anyone.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 01/01/2025 10:06

Perhaps I should start my own thread on this - but I think it's rather sad that you no longer seem to see pub cats. They used to be be fairly commonplace (great examples in Malvern and Oxford that I used to frequent), but I haven't seen a resident pub cat for years.

There is a pub with cats in Birmingham
Can't remember what it's called, proper traditional pub

Taking a dog into a pub is not "treating it as people"
Why is anything other than leaving a dog at home, seen as treating it as a person?
Like I said in a PP, if you are on holiday with your dog, you are not allowed to leave them in the accommodation. You have to take them to pubs etc. And in an area where there are lots of dog friendly holiday lets, there are lots of dog friendly pubs, shops etc. The canine pound counts for a lot.

Pubs absolutely stank then..... of farts. Smoke covered up a lot of sins.

Because animals dont really belong where people socialise, whether that be a shopping mall, supermarket, restaurant or pub. People can walk them outside or live with them, they dont need taking to public indoor areas.

Personally, I'd prefer a well-behaved dog over a badly behaved child.

I think most people will agree with you on that 🤣

So, are dogs just meant to stay at home, and never experience other places?
The dogs you see in pubs etc, are well behaved there because they were brought up going to those places, and are used to them.
Guide dogs also have to go to a variety of places so they are used to them.

YouMustBeTheWeasleys · 01/01/2025 21:21

@Ritasueandbobtoo9

Thank you! People like @Tara336 have the absolute audacity to think their right to comfort from their animal trumps another persons right to comfort from not being exposed to an allergen. Because of this they downplay the severity of pet allergies as something you can just get on with, with an antihistamine like hay fever. In reality if I spend an extended amount of time in a doggy space it can make me unwell for several days and the antihistamines don’t really touch the sides - fatigue, wheezing, breathlessness and a general “fug” feeling that can’t be explained any other way. For people with allergies the dogs create a a
literally suffocating atmosphere that cannot be fixed simply by hoovering up a bit of dog hair as it is the saliva and skin cells that cause a lot of the problems - it is also why the idea of a hypoallergenic dog is a nonsense.

What an absolutely disgusting attitude.

They can access the outdoors and do their business - the woods, the beach etc in line with local regs. They dont need to be inside publicly accessible places. They arent humans and shouldnt be treat as such.
