I wonder if she even needed to borrow the air wrap in the first place or was this all
pre meditated to cover the hotel costs.

i need to go to bed this is literally keeping me awake gob smacked

BambinaCucina · 02/01/2025 18:43

I can't keep up with all the posts! 🤣

She can come up with all the (albeit blatantly transparent) stories she wants - in fact, there's a way to pay back the credit bill quicker!

The fact remains that you loaned an expensive item to HER and her alone. The responsibility remains with HER to rectify the situation. I'm afraid you might end up in small claims court with this one though.

And I can't see any way past this for the friendship (small claims or not). She's shown you that she's a liar and doesn't care about you, or anyone else that she's tried to throw under the bus.

Don't believe a word of it honestly

Neither do I, it has all been bullshit and so it continues!

Well well well. The phone call took place. I’m shocked at the lies and the lengths she went to to cover up the lies to be honest!

Some previous posters were correct. She lent it to someone else and that person broke it. Can you believe it!!

She waffled on and on and made excuses for her behaviour at every turn. Essentially she admitted that following the wedding, her sister (one of the witnesses) asked if she could borrow it. Her sister apparently guilt tripped her in to letting her borrow it due to her sister paying for half of the small wedding.

She told me she regularly asked her sister to return it but didn’t hear anything from her (hence why she didn’t reply to me for a good few days). Her sister eventually came clean when she seen her on Christmas Day, admitting that she’d knocked a glass of wine over it and broke it. Her sister convinced her to come up with the cover story of leaving it in the hotel in order to buy some time to get money together to replace it.

I was not expecting what she said so was left a bit speechless if I’m honest. I told her that I wanted to digest the information but ultimately there’s no option other than to replace the airwrap for a new one as I don’t want to trust some random second hand one. She agreed and said that she was going to come clean to her husband tonight (he had no clue about any of this) and that she would be in touch no later than tomorrow morning with a resolution.

I honestly don’t know what to believe any more 🤣 did she sell it? Did she break it? Or did she genuinely lend it out?! Seems like CF’ery runs in the family though!

She spilt the wine - she’s thrown her sister under the bus IMO

Next drama will be her husband refusing to let any of their finances go towards buying a new one, which he’ll no doubt say is a ridiculous waste of money etc 🙄

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 02/01/2025 18:45

Netflix True Crime Special incoming:

The Blow Job - unwrap the Airwrap heist, one lie at at a time.

That actress from Inventing Anna can play the lead CF. The real Anna can play her sister.

’What are we wearing for the Small Claims Court? Who can we borrow from? Is there anyone left?’

’What about the girl who had the fake Blue Birkin?’

’Oh yes. Another victim to the hotel carpet?’

’Don’t you know blue is my favourite colour!’

I will write the script. For free. As long as everyone on the thread can be an extra, standing outside the court. Rotten tomatoes at the ready!

EmpressOfTheThread · 02/01/2025 18:46

I suspect that you won't get the money or the hairdryer. There will be some sort of victim situation for her to make you give up. Either her sister won't pay up, or her husband is being mean, or she's in terrible debt, or she's discovered she's pregnant and it's high risk.
I may put money on the last one....

SanctusInDistress · 02/01/2025 18:06

’dog ate my homework’ comes to
mind. Bye bye ‘friend’.

she’s going to stall and delay. You’ll never get it back or a new one. You are going to have to buy a new one yourself and learn the lesson never to lend stuff again.

Sorry to read all this but this quote is how it will go. Glad you got the truth OP and those 2 should split the cost and give you a new one. Still on the original borrower. Now you know what this person is like. No more subbing her if you stay friends. Split the bill or take cash. This one has more front than Blackpool.

Seelybee · 02/01/2025 18:47

Obviously your former friend needs to replace your Airwrap with no further procrastination aka lies. But from experience Dyson are very good for repairs going to them directly. They will probably charge £100 to collect, fix and return (you will need the original proof of purchase) but might be worth considering rather than write off an expensive item completely. Whoever pays upfront for the repair could keep it?

Bobbing46 · 02/01/2025 18:47

@Langarg Don't let her direct you to her sister. You didn't lend it to her sister. You left it to her. She needs to replace it and if she wants to get the money of her sister that's her business.

That French designer hat needs to be in there somewhere.

pimplebum · 02/01/2025 18:48

just for me , because I am a really really nosey nosey person
can you ring the hotel and casually in conversation ask how big the wedding was
I have an overwhelming feeling there were more people at this wedding than you were led to believe and you’ve Been mugged off twice
you were a good enough friend to lend a £400 device but not good enough to make the wedding party
go on please …
horrified that the daily mail journalists hang out here like leaches , that rag really is scum

She’s bullshitting you OP. My money’s still on her selling it.
She must think you were born yesterday 🙄😵‍💫

Iamnotalemming · 02/01/2025 18:49

Wowsers. Well if it's true, then in MN words, she has a DSis problem, but it's definitely not a you problem. She just needs to replace it and then have it out with her sister. Hopefully she'll just do that now. But I am agog at the complex lies she trotted out rather than just tell you she lent it to her sister. If she does stay in your life then you know you can't really trust her anymore.

dapsnotplimsolls · 02/01/2025 18:50

I'm holding out for a dog-related excuse - 'Dysonnie ate a vital part and we're just waiting for it to re-appear'

80smonster · 02/01/2025 18:52

Don’t care who broke or lost it, your sister should get you a new one. An expensive mistake. You shouldn’t lend the new one to anyone.

peachystormy · 02/01/2025 18:52

I don't really see why she's got to talk to her husband about it and 'come clean' more lies and stalking I bet.

I would just message her and say can you transfer the cost to me by the morning

Wow! That's some convoluted story 😲
To be honest it's so bad, I think I'd believe her.
Two things....

  1. there's no resolution other than her and/or her sister buying you a NEW airwrap
  2. I would never trust her again, and (after she has replaced it) I would tell her that - because of all her lies were.
XWKD · 02/01/2025 18:53

I wonder how big the wedding really was. Could she have had loads of people and just made an excuse not to invite you?

lovemetomybones · 02/01/2025 18:54

Dyson have a service where if you ring with the issue they try to repair it over the phone if they can't for £99 they take it in for repair and if they can't repair it they give you a refurbished one.

I did it with my straighteners. Maybe that could be the solution

Needanewname42 · 02/01/2025 18:54

The sister story doesn't make much sense, why wasnt it returned before Christmas?
However I would suggest one of them claim it on their house insurance.

The insurance company might want to see it which is an issue if she no longer has it.

Well that's great news OP! Now she can share the pain of buying a new one (currently £399 at Boots and other retailers) for you with her sister - £200 each - it's getting cheaper for her by the day! 😂
Seriously though, what on earth are their parents like that they brought up TWO daughters with no moral compass? They should all be ashamed of themselves.
I really don't think you should be waiting on yet another phone call from CF in the morning. I would text her now to say you're really not interested in the circumstances in which your treasured (and ruddy expensive!) item has not been returned to you - you simply want each of them to BACS transfer £200 to you NOW so you can order a new one tonight (before they sell out!).

ThisAvalanche · 02/01/2025 18:54

I bet she hasn't even got a sister Grin

OP, how about:

"None of your various explanations sound plausible to be honest. In any event, it doesn't change the solution, which is for you to pay me £400 for a new AirWrap. Can you now do so without any further delay. Whatever arrangement you reach with your sister is nothing to do with me. If you do not give me the money in cash by midday tomorrow, or by bank transfer this evening, I will raise a small claim to deal with the matter. I have been patient, but my patience with you is now irrevocably exhausted."

NeddieSeagoonsSteamPoweredTelephone · 02/01/2025 18:54

I would insist on her handing back the broken one, as well as a new replacement. After all, it’s no good to her now, is it?

dapsnotplimsolls · 02/01/2025 18:54

Was there even a wedding? Has the OP seen photos? Maybe they just borrowed loads of stuff which they then sold?!
