Don't believe a word of it either. I think she sold it to pay towards cost of the wedding, thinking that you'd buy the hotel story and write it off, and didn't dream for a second that you'd check with them. When she realised she couldn't get away with that, she's concocted the sister-and-the-spilled-wine scenario to buy some more time. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she blocks you tonight so you can't contact her.

HootyMcBoobs · 02/01/2025 18:07

AND let's not forget the fact that this horrid person also tried to implicate some poor unsuspecting cleaner / maid / hotel worker and potentially ruin the reputation of a hotel if the OP had decided to leave a Trustpilot review etc.

Do you really want to remain friends with someone like this?

None of her "story" even makes sense. I strongly suspect she is still lying to OP.

ThatsCute · 02/01/2025 18:07

Just remember OP, that your “contract” (for lack of a better word) is with the bride, not the sister. Regardless of what has happened, you loaned the BRIDE a Dyson, and the BRIDE must return one. Sounds like she’s lining you up to palm you off on the sis.

TheBluntTurtle · 02/01/2025 18:07

im just lolling that she made up that her newly married DH’s colourblindness meant that it blended in with the carpet so much so that they forgot it to cover up that she lent them to her sister and her sister spilt wine on them and broke them! It’s just bonkers!

Americano75 · 02/01/2025 18:08

Oh, no way did it get broken!

dapsnotplimsolls · 02/01/2025 18:08

I'll be honest, I've now moved over to team 'sold it'. She's now concocting a new story with DH.

BarryKentPoet · 02/01/2025 18:09

Wow, this is turning into quite the saga! I wonder what will happen next?

Thread 3?

No33 · 02/01/2025 18:10

You've just given her more time.

Tell.her there is no figuring out what to do next, what she does is gives you the money for a new Dyson.

Snowmanscarf · 02/01/2025 18:10

Thought she was planning to go to the hotel today to retrieve it, and now he doesn’t know about it!

Joelle84 · 02/01/2025 18:10

However she pays for it is her problem. Id want a brand new one with receipt in the next 48 hrs. If she gets her sister to pay half, thats her issue. cf lending it. £500 expensive mistake 🤦🏻‍♀️ taken the shine off her wedding indeed

ThisAvalanche · 02/01/2025 18:10

HamHand · 02/01/2025 18:04

I have loved following this thread. The problem here is how can you believe a single word she says? Just count up the lies she's already told. I'd not wait till tomorrow. I'd go to her house and actually watch her transfer the money to you. She seems the type to claim it's been sent then oops, it must have been the wrong account number and I can't get the money back. What a horror of a 'friend'

This, tbh. She'll go on lying through her teeth, OP. I would agree with supervising the transfer of funds - and tell her why - or get the cash.

"My sister spilled wine on it and forced me to lie" is pathetic beyond belief. It's right up there with 'my DH can't see objects on blue carpets.'

She is CHOOSING to lie to you over and over again. Do not trust her one single inch, OP.

Mrsbloggz · 02/01/2025 18:12

I think she sold it to pay towards cost of the wedding
I think this seems likely. She has woven not being able to afford the wedding into her lies about the airwrap, that was her riffing on the truth which is she sold it to offset the cost of the wedding.

angela1952 · 02/01/2025 18:12

I don't really believe CF, she's just trying to shift the blame and hopes that you will then take pity on her. Sadly I'm still expecting that you'll have to take this further to get the money or a new hairdryer as she obviously can't return it, for whatever reason. Small claims court does seem like a good bet - though I'm not sure whether this would work without some sort of contract or proof. Hopefully the threat would have the desired effect though.

Langarg · 02/01/2025 17:54

Well well well. The phone call took place. I’m shocked at the lies and the lengths she went to to cover up the lies to be honest!

Some previous posters were correct. She lent it to someone else and that person broke it. Can you believe it!!

She waffled on and on and made excuses for her behaviour at every turn. Essentially she admitted that following the wedding, her sister (one of the witnesses) asked if she could borrow it. Her sister apparently guilt tripped her in to letting her borrow it due to her sister paying for half of the small wedding.

She told me she regularly asked her sister to return it but didn’t hear anything from her (hence why she didn’t reply to me for a good few days). Her sister eventually came clean when she seen her on Christmas Day, admitting that she’d knocked a glass of wine over it and broke it. Her sister convinced her to come up with the cover story of leaving it in the hotel in order to buy some time to get money together to replace it.

I was not expecting what she said so was left a bit speechless if I’m honest. I told her that I wanted to digest the information but ultimately there’s no option other than to replace the airwrap for a new one as I don’t want to trust some random second hand one. She agreed and said that she was going to come clean to her husband tonight (he had no clue about any of this) and that she would be in touch no later than tomorrow morning with a resolution.

I honestly don’t know what to believe any more 🤣 did she sell it? Did she break it? Or did she genuinely lend it out?! Seems like CF’ery runs in the family though!

I said all along husband didn't know about it.
So trip to hotel to look for it was crap
Better for you she said the sister is involved so 2 of them can pay for a new one.

ThisAvalanche · 02/01/2025 18:12

Sorry...why does she need even more time? It takes seconds to purchase a new one or hand over the money. How she sorts out her life/family/money beyond that is not your problem.

God, you've got more patience than me, OP!

Anythingyousay · 02/01/2025 18:13

She's going to have to come clean to DH and admit that she tried to throw him under the bus first of all!

mumedu · 02/01/2025 18:13

Curtainqueen · 02/01/2025 17:57

Knocked a glass of wine over it my arse. She's either kept it or given it away and told them they could keep it. Do not let her off the hook. She owes you.

Yeah, who knocks wine on a hairdryer. This is odd.

SlightlyJaded · 02/01/2025 18:13

I don't think it matters what the truth is. Block out the noise and the facts are:

She owes you a brand new Airwrap and has admitted as much
She lied and was prepared to blame the hotel/fob you off with a second hand one

In your shoes, I would now put pressure for a deadline on the Airwrap - I'd be furious if my everyday hairdryer/styler was out of action for any reason. Not that you should have to, but why not invent an event with an associated date "I am going out next Sat 11th and NEED it replaced before then" type thing.

Then once it is replaced, you can decide if you want to continue the friendship. I might find a way to forgive the loan to the sister and subsequent panic, but I would struggle to get past stuff like her saying 'it's taking a shine off my wedding' etc - the emotional blackmail and attempts to fob you off will need a massive apology.

Mrsbloggz · 02/01/2025 18:13

she'll spin it out, plead poverty, offer to pay in installments which will dry up, etc. You wont get the money op

ThisAvalanche · 02/01/2025 18:13

The entire story is likely to be another stack of lies. It's completely implausible bollocks, frankly.

Pretty sure a notification comes on if you record a call, like if you record a zoom or teams call

Hmm... do you know anybody who can produce a window-shatteringly loud sneeze/cough/burp/fart to order - to be timed to coincide exactly with the voice that tells you it's being recorded?!

SummerHouse · 02/01/2025 18:14

I believed in the carpet. The sister and the wine? No. I have my limits. But as PPs have said, it doesn't really matter if Prince Andrew took it to Pizza Express, she just needs to replace it with a new one or reimburse you for that amount.

MildredSauce · 02/01/2025 18:14

WoolySnail · 02/01/2025 17:55

Does the winner get an air wrap?! 🤔 😁

I think I was one of the winners but I already have a AW - although it's broken!!! Overheats every 5 mins....

bigkahunaburger · 02/01/2025 18:15

OP there is just too much talk now. What happened is irrelevant and not your problem. Its hers. I dont like the fact it has been left that she will come back to you tomorrow morning with a resolution. What does that mean?? I think you are giving her the opportunity for more bollox tomorrow.

I would reply to her now, 'I have reflected on what you have said, and ultimately its irrelevant what happened. All that matters is I am down a Dyson airwrap and I want a new replacement. I require you to either transfer £400 to me, or to purchase this one from Boots with the receipt this evening (include link). There is no other resolution'.

Clear and simple. Otherwise she is going to tie you in knots and fanny about for days on end I reckon, and you will be no closer to getting an airwrap.
