I am honestly gripped by this saga

bigkahunaburger · 02/01/2025 17:35

Me too!!!! i really must get out more

JimHalpertsWife · 02/01/2025 17:36

If she even dares mention it being overpriced (like when her dh said about hairdryers being cheap), it's obviously a very very good bit of kit if borrowing one has meant not having to fork out for an expensive wedding hair do. Her own (presumably reasonably priced) hairdryer wasn't good enough for her.

SharpWriter · 02/01/2025 17:37

Literally checking back every 5 minutes now to see if 'the call' has happened yet

bigkahunaburger · 02/01/2025 17:41

Same, same Sharpwriter

If she does the 'but its soooo expensive i shouldnt have to refund the price of it, Ill give you the price of a reasonable hairdryer' it will be like that Sex in the City episode with the shoes. Im sure she was well aware how expensive they are, hence why she wanted to borrow them, - not that that is even relevant anyway. Dont let her try that on. I just know her response is going to be sooo CF. Are you good at thinking on your feet OP? Id be rubbish, and have excellent response ideas ..once I got off the phone. :P

AngelicKaty · 02/01/2025 16:14

Yes, but that was back in 2002. @Pipsquiggle corrected me regarding his post-Brexit hypocrisy: "He actually moved Dyson head office to Singapore, after Singapore had just signed a trade deal with the EU. This means wherever his products are manufactured, he gets the benefits of the EU trade deal. Such a disingenuous shyster."

Ah, thanks - so I was right, but just very out of date!

Either way, he chose the path of greed rather than the (still extremely lucrative) path of integrity.

Lavenderfarmcottage · 02/01/2025 17:42

I love that mumsnet is divided over 10,000,000 pound of jewels stolen but one woman has a missing (albeit expensive) hairdryer and we are outraged. Having good hair goes a huge way to how you feel.

Sadly I have to go to bed as am overseas but I hope to wake up to happy news.

Heres hoping a staff member found it and you all live happily ever after.

ThisAvalanche · 02/01/2025 17:47

Of course. The CF 'needs to speak with you.' This is her final go at guilt-tripping you into letting her off the hook. Expect tears/half-arsed explanations/blame going elsewhere, and of course - more lies.

Ugh. She's truly appalling.

menopausalfart · 02/01/2025 17:47

@Lavenderfarmcottage I suppose because the average person find it difficult to empathise with the rich.

EmpressOfTheThread · 02/01/2025 16:17

Some years ago, a friend borrowed an expensive item of mine. When it was returned, it was a cheaper, inferior version. She was absolutely insistent that was what I'd lent her. Just a bare faced lie.
I hope that doesn't happen to you.

That's a common eBay scam - where people will buy a designer product and then say they want to return it, but then return a £5 knock-off version from the local market instead. Some of the more brazen ones even demand a refund on the basis that the designer item was supposedly a fake, when it wasn't; but then the one that they return instead obviously IS a fake.

But these scummy scammers are random anonymous people online, who don't know you and have no loyalty to you. It takes a very 'special' kind of 'friend' to pull a stunt like that. One who clearly values a one-off gain from scamming you far more than your continued friendship.

Come on Dyson UK give us all a happy ending

Are Dyson branching out in their product line?

Thanks! I saw that and was howling with laughter! Your quip was spectacular. 😘

Yep, my money's on no call today. Should we start a sweepstake, or a bingo card? I reckon when OP does get a response she'll try to guilt OP by claiming someone close to her is ill or has met with an accident, as though that changes anything.

MrsPositivity1 · 02/01/2025 17:53

Iwantamarshmallowman · 01/01/2025 01:38

If she doesn't come up with the goods, it might be worth looking up the process of taking it to small claims. You have to write a series of letters first. This could be helpful because even if you weren't going to take her to small claims, the letters might be enough to get her to give them back. It worked once for me when someone owed us money.

Good advice

Langarg · 02/01/2025 17:54

Well well well. The phone call took place. I’m shocked at the lies and the lengths she went to to cover up the lies to be honest!

Some previous posters were correct. She lent it to someone else and that person broke it. Can you believe it!!

She waffled on and on and made excuses for her behaviour at every turn. Essentially she admitted that following the wedding, her sister (one of the witnesses) asked if she could borrow it. Her sister apparently guilt tripped her in to letting her borrow it due to her sister paying for half of the small wedding.

She told me she regularly asked her sister to return it but didn’t hear anything from her (hence why she didn’t reply to me for a good few days). Her sister eventually came clean when she seen her on Christmas Day, admitting that she’d knocked a glass of wine over it and broke it. Her sister convinced her to come up with the cover story of leaving it in the hotel in order to buy some time to get money together to replace it.

I was not expecting what she said so was left a bit speechless if I’m honest. I told her that I wanted to digest the information but ultimately there’s no option other than to replace the airwrap for a new one as I don’t want to trust some random second hand one. She agreed and said that she was going to come clean to her husband tonight (he had no clue about any of this) and that she would be in touch no later than tomorrow morning with a resolution.

I honestly don’t know what to believe any more 🤣 did she sell it? Did she break it? Or did she genuinely lend it out?! Seems like CF’ery runs in the family though!

Does the winner get an air wrap?! 🤔 😁

BMW6 · 02/01/2025 17:55

Whatever happens the friendship surely must be over?

I couldn't ever forgive the dishonesty, manipulation, slyness and lack of morals.

Even if she genuinely did leave them at the Hotel (which I don't believe for a second), the fact that she didn't tell you immediately tells me everything I need to know about her character.

I hope karma finds her soon and pays her out.

dapsnotplimsolls · 02/01/2025 17:56

I think you should ring her sister to get her version!

Curtainqueen · 02/01/2025 17:57

Knocked a glass of wine over it my arse. She's either kept it or given it away and told them they could keep it. Do not let her off the hook. She owes you.

HootyMcBoobs · 02/01/2025 17:57

Sounds like crap.
How would getting something WET (that is designed to be in contact with WET HAIR) ruin it so badly that it is beyond repair?
Garbage.

menopausalfart · 02/01/2025 17:57

At least the pair of them can suck up the cost. CFs indeed.

Doesn't really matter what happened to it, she'll never tell the truth and you won't be able to believe her anyway! Brand new replacement and always remember how she's behaved. Personally I wouldn't be continuing the friendship x

I literally don't believe a word of it.

Don't get blown off course by her continued, relentless BS. Just get the money to replace it. I wouldn't trust her an INCH with buying one for you.

It's taken her days to come up with this crap. She obviously takes you for a gullible fool, OP.

Thehouseisatip · 02/01/2025 17:59

Whatever has or hasn't happened to it she needs to replace it.

Doesn't matter who did what to it at the end of the day you are a Dyson Airwrap
Down. And she needs to replace it with another one that is the same as the one you let her use!

CF!
