Here you go ! Quite right to be prepared

Should she replace it? Part 2
periodiclabel · 02/01/2025 16:37

Subsequentt to which, after experimenting I've discovered yes you can do it an iPhone, Yay! Very useful to know. What a handy thread :)

And to whoever asked about Dyson Airwraps, mine is my most treasured possession and worth every penny (though I did buy a refurbished one so it didn't cost anything like £500). I hate it when I travel to a country where the voltage is incompatible and I can't use it. I would been very reluctant to lend one to a friend as I couldn't have coped a day without mine.

WorldKeepsSpinningRound · 02/01/2025 16:38

I wonder if the OP has checked local FB marketplace posts/ebay etc just incase her “friend” has recently sold an airwrap.

Does anyone know how you record a call on an iPhone? If she doesn’t call me, I will call her

According to Google:

To record a voice call on an iPhone, you can:

  • Open the Phone app and make a call
  • Tap the Start Call Recording button in the top left corner of the screen
  • Both parties will hear a notice that the call is being recorded*
  • To stop recording, tap the Stop button or end the call
  • Saved recordings are stored in the Notes app under the Call Recordings folder
  • To view, open the Notes app and select View Saved Call
  • To view the text version of the call, open a recording in the Call Recordings folder, and select Transcript.

*However, this makes it clear she will know you're recording the call (assuming the "notice" is clear).

Doxiedolittle · 02/01/2025 16:48

Ooh don’t they’re a genuine waste of money. Curls drop within hours and the Airwrap will start making a loud noise after a few months and Dyson customer service is dreadful - BBC Watchdog confirmed - buyer beware.

Hope Ops friend comes good and returns hers though.

cakewench · 02/01/2025 16:52

Put her on speaker and record it with another phone, imo.

My hair never holds a curl with or without my AirWrap so there's no difference there.

I was looking earlier today at some photos from a few years back (aka the "pre-AirWrap era") and the difference in my hair is staggering. I use the smoothing brush to just brush dry my hair and it looks so, so good now compared to before when it was always just a bit frizzy all the time, even with a professional grade hair dryer.

When my hairdresser does my hair now, I get her to leave it wet and I dry it myself as I much prefer it.

There's definitely more to the AirWrap than just the curling tools and I'd replace mine in a heartbeat if/when it breaks. So far we're four years into mine and it's still going well (touching all the wood I can find!).

TheoTurkey · 02/01/2025 16:54

Just to confirm what others have said, you can record, but a loud message will alert the other person. My daughter just got a new phone and was talking to me while fiddling about with it, when suddenly, loudly, over the top of her talking it said ‘this call is being recorded’. Genuinely don’t think she was trying to trap me as we were talking about fabric conditioner. Boring I know, but she’s just had a baby so there’s endless laundry chat

AngelicKaty · 02/01/2025 16:54

periodiclabel · 02/01/2025 16:20

It's illegal to record a phone convo without the owner's permission and I'm 99.9% certain your phone wouldn't let you do it

Not true. It is legal to record a phone call in the UK without the other person's consent if the recording is for your own personal use, but you can't share the recording with a third party without their consent. And it is possible to record a call on an iPhone, but a notice is declared to both parties on the call so OP's CF friend would know the call was being recorded.

menopausalfart · 02/01/2025 17:00

We''ll soon need a thread 3 if the CF makes up any more excuses. Wouldn't surprise me if this thread continued into 2026.

A voice message on whatsapp could work, although she may not do one in return.

Record on a separate device I would tell her you are recording it as well before you start

Langarg · 02/01/2025 17:15

Thanks for the info re recording the phone call. Will record from another phone with mine on loudspeaker. No phone call yet but I asked if she could call me asap

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 02/01/2025 17:15

Download a voice recording app, then put it on speakerphone and use the app.

It is not illegal to record a personal call.
It may be inadmissible in court, but it is not in itself a crime.

Be aware though that if she is as you say an avid mumsnet reader she may well have come across this thread so you should assume she has and act accordingly.

Tell her ll you want is either your item or a replacement item. Her losing it (or not) is not your problem. She needs to make you whole. How she does that is up to her.

And don't get distracted by tales of woe. Her problems are exactly that. Her problems and don't change the fact that you loaned her something and have the right to get it back.

JimHalpertsWife · 02/01/2025 17:17

Also, so what if she's found this thread and is cross about it? It's all borne from the fact she lost/broke/stole something she loaned off a friend and has failed to replace it.

AcrossthePond55 · 02/01/2025 17:20

@Langarg

Careful. When a CF says they want to speak to you it's because they think you'll be more susceptible to their 'verbal' tears and pleas or that they think they can steamroll over your objections/requests and make you the 'bad guy'. Chances are she wants to make her 'poverty pleas' by phone thinking she can make you back down.

iPhone now has a one button 'record call' function. Just be aware that there is an audible tone on both ends. And be aware that she may also record the call to catch you out being 'mean' to her.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 02/01/2025 17:20

You can record it by doing a screen recording I believe.

dublino · 02/01/2025 17:21

Here to see the outcome of this call. Gripped

JimHalpertsWife · 02/01/2025 17:22

Don't be afraid of leaving silence in the call. Sitting patiently and waiting for her to keep digging a hole or manipulate you into forgiveness is a good tactic.

dapsnotplimsolls · 02/01/2025 17:27

Have you got a screenshot of all her messages yet? I suspect you might need them for the small claims court. I reckon there'll be some kind of emergency that prevents her from calling you. Dead budgie? Burnt hair? Overloaded with people messaging her with a link to the DM article/these threads saying 'Is this about you? Where's the ... you borrowed from me?'

Lavenderfarmcottage · 02/01/2025 17:27

Hmmmm remember the Prince Andrew BBC interview. First establish the basic facts. The name of the hotel, where it was left when she called the hotel. It doesn’t hurt to go over these basics a second time. After you’ve established the basics then build on this.

tygertygers · 02/01/2025 17:28

The latest iPhone update allows you to record calls. It does say "this call is being recorded" so she will know.

Good luck!

ChimneyRock · 02/01/2025 17:32

Don't allow her to derail the issue by getting into a debate about the rights and wrongs of posting on here.
If she gets into "how could you?" territory, bring her back to the actual point.

FestiveFruitloop · 02/01/2025 17:34

Definitely this, OP, and don't let her try to manipulate you with tears or hard-luck stories. CF has made an expensive mistake and it needs putting right, regardless if it causes problems for her.

I'm still gobsmacked she is being quite so CF-y about what's happened, tbh. If I was her (setting aside the fact that I don't think I would ask to borrow such an expensive item in the first place), I'd be awash with guilt and would have resolved this for OP as soon as it occurred, as I think most decent human beings would.
