Not that it makes a lot of difference for the principle, but didn't he up sticks from his factory in Malmesbury and move all manufacturing to Malaysia?

Yes, but that was back in 2002. @Pipsquiggle corrected me regarding his post-Brexit hypocrisy: "He actually moved Dyson head office to Singapore, after Singapore had just signed a trade deal with the EU. This means wherever his products are manufactured, he gets the benefits of the EU trade deal. Such a disingenuous shyster."

RobinStrike · 02/01/2025 16:15

Phone call is avoiding anything in writing. Definitely dodgy.

EmpressOfTheThread · 02/01/2025 16:17

Some years ago, a friend borrowed an expensive item of mine. When it was returned, it was a cheaper, inferior version. She was absolutely insistent that was what I'd lent her. Just a bare faced lie.
I hope that doesn't happen to you.

RobinStrike · 02/01/2025 16:17

The new airwrap also needs to be sent to you to register with Dyson for the warranty.

JustWalkingTheDogs · 02/01/2025 16:18

Yes you can record a phone call on an iPhone. There's a button on the top left, I think, that you can press which records the convo.

Thisismynewname23 · 02/01/2025 16:20

I’m so invested in this 😭😆

It's illegal to record a phone convo without the owner's permission and I'm 99.9% certain your phone wouldn't let you do it

Wow that's awful.

I assume you're not longer friends?

Pickledhen · 02/01/2025 16:23

I would insist on the money to replace what she has lost. If she is left to buy it she may buy something similar but not exactly what you had or want. Also she may be procrastinating hoping ro find one on vinted /ebay post christmas for less money.

I hope you mean ex friend?x

Lavenderfarmcottage · 02/01/2025 16:23

Friend if you’re reading this, you’re not a bad person but you’ve done a wrong thing and a mean thing. Just return it with a bunch of flowers and an excuse. You must surely be wetting your pants over it being in the DM & police resources over a fake stolen item

If you didn’t steal it then I apologise for thinking you did .

AngelicKaty · 02/01/2025 16:23

@Langarg "She has replied a few minutes ago saying that she will call me later." WTAF?! How much longer is she going to take the piss? The only thing she needs to do now is turn up on your doorstep with a brand-new, like-for-like AirWrap, tied up in an enormous blue bow (to match the hotel carpet!) and hand it to you from a kneeling position whilst begging for your forgiveness! Cheeky, CHEEKY F*cker! 😡
Honestly OP, I really admire your forbearance. 😇

Correct!

Pickledhen · 02/01/2025 16:24

....alternatively insist on the insurance claim...ie Hotel, possibly police,...that will spur her into action.

I do! She was, however, a good friend at the time. I've learned to stop being a people pleaser.

rainbowstardrops · 02/01/2025 16:26

I still reckon it's going to miraculously appear!
Not the point but are the Air Wraps worth the money? I've thought about buying one but they're crazy expensive!

saraclara · 02/01/2025 16:27

I'd definitely look into small claims court. Even if it just gives you something to threaten her with.

WorldKeepsSpinningRound · 02/01/2025 16:28

I’m aghast that the OP has had to navigate Christmas and NY with no hairdryer!

Jolenekeephim · 02/01/2025 16:28

Does anyone else think that the friend is now well aware of this thread and will be phoning later to have it out with OP? All of her counter arguments will be based on what she’s seen on here…

If that does happen - OP please remember that this is all entirely anonymous so you have done nothing wrong. In fact you’ve been kinder by asking for opinions without having to reveal this issue to friends/people that know those involved.

Also - and apologies if this has already been suggested - but might your friend have taken out wedding insurance? If so, could you suggest that she gets a crime number and claims from that (or even from her home insurance?)

AngelicKaty · 02/01/2025 16:31

usernamealreadytaken · 02/01/2025 15:45

Not sure you understand the meaning of hypocrisy. Hypocrisy would have been moving manufacturing to an EU country. Dyson is still registered for tax in the UK, and is one of the top 50 UK tax contributors.

Part of the point of Brexit was for the UK to become more global, rather than being restricted by/to the EU. Manufacturing in Singapore, while maintaining R&D, massive training facilities, and keeping headquartered in the UK shows commitment and continued investment in the UK, while reducing costs to the consumer and making global distribution easier and more profitable.

Well, how very patronising of you. 🙄I know exactly what hypocrisy means. RTFT to see the discussion.

It's not illegal to record the conversation - although the recording would be inadmissible in court and it would be illegal to share the recording with anyone else

Assuming OP is only recording to listen back herself and go over/think about what was said though it's fine

MrsPeregrine · 02/01/2025 16:32

If you want to record the call could you have your phone on loud speaker and get someone else to record on their phone?

Izzy54321 · 02/01/2025 16:33

Hi Op I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned it but is it possible she has given it to someone for Christmas? I’m presuming the wedding was before Christmas. I would be checking all her female relatives Facebook to see if anyone had one for Christmas. Just a thought OP. I really really hope she is calling you to arrange a new one 🙏

You can record conversations you are party to and can use a transcript in court.

Not suggesting the OP would get in trouble for doing so! Just phones tend to make it impossible to do this - but google now says you can do it with an iPhone, so it's obviously changed and so long as OP doesn't take her friend to court on the back of what is said then all is good!
