Starting the new thread ahead of hopefully having an update soon!

You have accused her of stealing it by saying "if you have genuinely left it" OP. She will definitely think you think she's stolen it now. I don't think that's helpful.

Errors · 02/01/2025 15:52

Invested

Paradisegained · 02/01/2025 15:52

As others have said record the call.

VesperLind · 02/01/2025 15:54

CF knows that OP knows it isn’t lost. I’m wondering now if she’s going to phone up, admit that the “it’s lost” story was a lie, and say she lied because she broke it and was too embarrassed to say. She will then start with a sob story about why she can’t/shouldn’t have to pay for a new one.

Langarg · 02/01/2025 15:57

Does anyone know how you record a call on an iPhone? If she doesn’t call me, I will call her

Gggglinda · 02/01/2025 15:58

Be very careful with option 2. She's already shown you what a CF she is, and it wouldn't surprise me if she got a fake cheap one, or something used off market place. If she goes with option 2 tell her you want a gift receipt incase you need the warranty in the future, so you can be sure it's new from a reputable retailer.

Have you already asked her the room number in the hotel? She's dragging her heels to get this sorted for you, you need to put some pressure on her. "Oh by the way, what's the room number so I can log it with the police as theft please. I had better get the ball rolling in reporting it if you're unable to go tomorrow"

Put her on loud speaker and use a different device to record

This. Otherwise she will know you're recording her.

How would she know? Never recorded anyone and don't plan to. Wouldn't even know how, just curious incase I ever needed to 😂

That’s the thing, if she’s a regular MN user as OP says then this has spanned two threads - no way is she not going to have seen it. She will have seen everybody’s theories, opinions and all of OP’s replies, so she will also have picked up pointers about how to construct her story. I wouldn’t rule out her saying she broke it now, just to try her luck one last time and try and get out of looking like a thief, although she will still have to pay, so maybe not!

This is the only way I know how to record a call too. If you don’t have a second phone there might be a voice memo app on your laptop maybe?

JHound · 02/01/2025 16:01

I just read the first one. Your mate is a b1tch. Sorry.
She owes you a new replacement and should have purchased it without you having to follow-up and ask.
If it was more I would be heading to small claims but got the small amount it was I would likely buy myself a new one and block the friend.

ETA - I was looking at the Facebook cost. A new replacement is £500. I would be tempted by small claims. I did that with a former housemate who refused to return my deposit. Got my money back plus costs straight from his wages.

Illinoise · 02/01/2025 16:03

If she’s saying the hotel stole it, definitely call the police! It may catalyse some action/honesty on her part,

thescandalwascontained · 02/01/2025 16:03

A true friend would have returned it or sent you the money for a new one long before now. £400 in the sales had she acted promptly.

She's looking to weasel her way out of replacing something she 'lost' (or kept or sold on) when she was responsible for it after begging you to lend it to her.

I would be absolutely not interested in any 'sob story' she's likely concocting at the moment. And why should any 'sob story' on her part trump your own financial issues? And how you went without other treats and niceties for a long time to save up for the Dyson in the first place?

She needs to produce it or buy you a new one. End of. And you need to make that clear to her.

2025HereICome · 02/01/2025 16:05

Placemarking to see how this call goes down... can't believe she text you after 3am on NY, guilty conscience I reckon...

menopausalfart · 02/01/2025 16:05

Bloody hell. The CF knows how to drag this out.

Edited

Pretty sure a notification comes on if you record a call, like if you record a zoom or teams call

surreygirl1987 · 02/01/2025 16:08

Hmmm. If she'd sorted it, I would have thought she would have just said that by text. Don't like the sound of the phone call. OP, I'd have a few 'lines' prepared it I were you. What do you want out of this phonecall, main questions, main points to make etc, and have them written down ready. And yes, I'd want to record this it I were you as well.

WoolySnail · 02/01/2025 16:10

God everyone is being so unfair to your friend...she has to read all these posts so she can keep constructing more elaborate lies that none of us have thought of her using 😂

thedogissnoringsoloud · 02/01/2025 16:11

Message her along the following lines:

"I obviously need to get his sorted asap. As you are unable to get to the hotel due to the weather, can you give me the names of the staff you have been dealing with there. I will then speak with them directly and explain that if they are unable to shed any light on who may have taken it, then I will need to get the police involved due to the high value"!

momtoboys · 02/01/2025 16:11

You can but it plays a message saying the call is recorded. The button is in the top corner of the screen when you make a call. Alternatively just record the call using another phone or tablet or laptop etc.
