the problem is, what is driving to the hotel 2 hours away going to accomplish? It's just so weird to say they are going to do that?

If she IS genuine (big if), then she should have called the police or threatened to call the police while on the phone to the hotel, not accept their answer then weeks later decide to drive there, what was she planning to do, look in the room? Maybe she thinks it was so camouflaged in the carpet that it is still there?!

If she hasn't been so brazen to keep it for herself (plausible), then I think it is more likely that she had help bringing things in and out of their room, or people have been in and out of the room on the day of the wedding and someone involved in the wedding has stolen it from wherever she left it unattended, she would not want to admit to that, so would make up a bullshit story to cover.

It will be interesting to know what she comes back with, I'd be pushing for the money now or sticking with the police involvement with regards to the hotel.

The hotel would have definitely looked into it. They take pride on this stuff.

Any reputable hotel hosting weddings (if they did host it not sure) would be mortified and do all they can to help.

I just massively doubt they would say not here okay bye!

Sorry, I was talking about police, but I agree the hotel should be at least seen to be taking it very seriously. Especially when review sites like Tripadvisor could tell ppl expensive stuff goes missing there. Not a good look.

If it helps, at some point in the coming messages you could give her an out by saying "have you looked everywhere in the car? It probably slid under a seat"...

So she can "find" it and hand it over. As per my last suggestion, I'd still block her after!

Good idea.

Not necessarily. I left a beautiful full length cloak in a room in a posh and expensive hotel.
I realised as soon as I got home, called the hotel and they denied all knowledge

Shocking! I hope you left a review

I did, and they left a very unprofessional response, which I doubt did them any favours.

It allows her to maintain her cover story which will no doubt involve "travelling to the hotel" and miraculously locating the hairdryer in their lost property cupboard which hadn't been properly checked before.

And made a complaint and reported the theft, likely by hotel staff. Housekeeping should be checking wardrobes as part of a room turnover. No reputable hotel has an approach to items left in rooms, that if housekeeping find it the hotel will turn a blind eye if they take it. They should require any items to be handed in to lost property and notify the guest. It’s basic good practice.

SummerHouse · 02/01/2025 12:05

Could it still be in the room so similar to the carpet as it is, just quietly blending in, unaware that it has gone viral and inspired purchases across the world. (Sold out on the Dyson website!)

Strictlymad · 02/01/2025 12:07

Possibly a bit late for this but could you pretend to be on her side and all guns blazing against the hotel, ask who she spoke to, say you will make a formal complaint, mention police, review on google/trip advisor etc? Would this flush her out on any lies?

Yet she’s no longer travelling to the hotel because of bad weather, so I do wonder what all that was about …

Tricho · 02/01/2025 12:09

I'd be tempted to leave a TripAdvisor review for the hotel - then when they inevitably get in touch to resolve you'll get to the bottom of it

It wasn’t even in a wardrobe. I left it on a chair (no idea how).
I spoke to the manager, he just did not care

Yes you're right, it's weird. Why string it out, so maybe my hunch is all wrong.
Arrgh, I'm so over invested!

Great idea. Gives her a way out if she has taken it.

Needanewname42 · 02/01/2025 12:25

Yip asking her to double check luggage and the car isn't a bad idea.

It might be worth asking does she want to claim it from her insurance.
And remind her the insurance company will probably want a crime ref number so she can claim it.

MildredSauce · 02/01/2025 12:41

Place marking because I'm invested in this now and it's probably been asked before @Langarg but any chance she's lent it out and is awaiting it to come back?

Andikoi · 02/01/2025 12:44

happy new year all,if she left in hotel room and was taken after she left, then they have a duty to investigate and report to police themselves,so she probably didnt.
my theory it was so good she kept it and thinks your such a people pleaser as she's lost/forgot things before, that you would just say "oh dear oh no,dont worry about it".
your response including the hotel phone call has thrown her and she is now struggling find a solution that doesnt cost her £500 ( £449 on amazon and she could pay monthly no interest with paypal lol).
do not let her get away with it,tell her you need to either have a replacement bought or you will have to contact police for a crime reference number for insurance and give them all her details so they can contact her, sorry if this has dropped the shine from your wedding, my hair has also lost its shine.
by the way if they drove to this hotel they can claim for personal belongings on car insurance,i have this on my policy.

I don't know any women who don't love spa days! Except me. My idea of pampering looks more like a fabulous restaurant than a beauty clinic.

I hate spa days. I always turn them down.

Posting simply to find out what happens lol I've never even heard of an airwrap so I'm off to Google......

It's a ridiculously overpriced hair styling device made by Brexit supporter who then moved his business abroad Jeremy Dyson.

jenny38 · 02/01/2025 12:48

I honestly doubt a friend would steal a hairdryer, and create such drama. Call the hotel again, you may speak to a different member of staff, say you are going to report it to the police in 24 hours, but are giving them a chance to have a last look for it. Sometimes things turn up. I recently left my kindle at a hotel. Reception had no knowledge, but I rang back, asked to be put through to housekeeping, and it was found.
Failing all of this, your friend should replace it. Quickly.

JapanOneDay · 02/01/2025 12:49

I wish you and a mutual friend could pop over to hers. The friend keeps her chatting whilst you go up and have a quick snoop. Then march down brandishing the airwrap and leave with a look of contempt and a flourish.

Ladylushka · 02/01/2025 12:50

If it is at all possible (which I doubt) that the air wrap box did vanish into the unknown blue carpet in a chameleon-like fashion, what if another guest picked it up? I’m just speculating if this could be the next excuse if the air wrap is not “found” at the hotel by the OP’s friend during her return trip there.
If the friend buys a new air wrap, she needs to provide a valid receipt for it so the OP can verify it is a new set rather than a second hand set.
I am now being very tempted by an air wrap from Currys, they sound fantastic.
