Must admit I ended up googling the airwrap and reading up the reviews and whatnot...idle curiosity.
I don't want one...I'm dead lazy on the beauty front and wouldn't bother with it. However, it is the OP's loved item and cost a lot. It's a slap in the dish to have it weeched away in this manner.
I liken it to lending someone one of my tents which I never would and being told I spoiled someone's holiday by asking for it back.

She took the gloves off first.

Edited

exactly. we all have something we would justify as a treat that other people would think was crazy money.
I've got fine, straight hair, so a towel does the job for my hair. wrap it for a bit, give it a rub, then air dry. bingo. I never use hairdryers, let alone fancy ones.

but I have a guitar I saved up for for several years, it was over a grand, back in the early 00s. I'm sure there's lots of people that would think that was a waste of money too.

the point isn't what she spent her money on. to her it was worth it, and there's no reason not to return or replace it.

Morning all

I received an incoherent text message from my friend at about 3.15am (clearly drunk) rambling on about how she valued our friendship so much but couldn’t help but feel this whole situation had taken the shine off her wedding! The absolute cheek of it! She went on to say she will sort this out and hopes it can be ‘left in 2024’

I have a feeling she’s read here and is trying to make me feel guilty. Why else would she say it’s taken the shine off the wedding other than to try and make me feel bad?! Or have I become cynical?

Yup, she is trying to get you to say “forget about it”

Hold your ground. She must return it or replace.

Joelle84 · 01/01/2025 19:41

Its taken the shine off her wedding? The cheeky begger. She made a mistake by leaving it. Does she want you to just say - yeah not to worry ill buy another. To ring you at 3am means shes clearly thinking about it. Good. She needs to purchase a new one asap on her credit card. If she had just paid for a hairdresser, it would’ve cost less!

PeloMom · 01/01/2025 19:44

Was / is she expecting for you to let it go as a ‘wedding’ gift? I don’t understand what is she trying to achieve here

Teanbiscuits33 · 01/01/2025 19:46

I wouldn’t be surprised, given her barefaced cheek and bullheaded victim mentality, if she blocks you soon or just stops communicating completely and you never see her or your airwrap again. I’ve had similar from someone who I thought was a good friend before, and I think it’s even more likely given that you didn’t appear to be that close to this thieving bitch in the first place.

"It's taken the shine off our friendship as well"

Dyson hair tools are like the Crown Jewels 😂
I like it!
"Taken the shine off the wedding", there was no wedding really, weren't they just married with 2 witnesses?

Oh behave, I got married with 2 witnesses. Was still very much a wedding.

VanillaVein · 01/01/2025 19:52

I still wish her nothing but shitty hair. Hope she's caught in a strong gust of wind, her hair tangles into a massive knot that can't ever be brushed out. The thieving cow.

Don't back down OP.

Roryno · 01/01/2025 19:56

Did you reply? What a cheeky cow! She really has no manners. I bet your friendship is important to her- I bet she hasn’t many friends that she can treat so badly!

Does she still profess to be going to the hotel to try and find it tomorrow?

Laszlomydarling · 01/01/2025 20:03

Placemarkimg for the update, I really hope you get it back, and not the marketplace one!

Sirmagoo · 01/01/2025 20:03

Reply back- "It's taken the shine off my hair too."

LeBonBon · 01/01/2025 20:08

I don't think she's nicked it, she's clearly got form for losing stuff and it may have been taken by someone at the hotel (unfortunate but what can you do).

She's now blaming you for wrecking her wedding by having the cheek to ask for a proper replacement. How CF of you! (Joking)

If I ever damaged or lost something of a friend's, I would pay for a new one immediately, no question.

She obviously doesn't want to do this but tough doodoo.

You're only "taking the shine off" her wedding because she was deliberately doing everything on the cheap and she's messed up and now has to spend more on the airwrap than she would have spent on a hairdresser. Get out the tiny violins!

Wingingit247 · 01/01/2025 20:25

I just cannot believe the gall, she’s trying to shift the blame for HER losing your very expensive and treasured possession ?!? Honestly, this is nuts, she’s already lied so is obviously covering up something dodgy. If she’d genuinely left it she would have called the hotel, clearly nicked it. Now trying to “leave it in 2024” to try to get you to forget about it???? Christ on a bike.

Onekidnoclue · 01/01/2025 20:48

I’m so into this. You’re doing brilliantly OP. Your “friend” is now on the back foot. Good luck.

WishinAndHopin · 01/01/2025 20:48

Sceptical123 · 01/01/2025 14:55

Not aimed specifically at this poster as I’ve seen others warn she may keep it if she drops OP as a friend - but I don’t get why it’s a seemingly accepted response that if a friendship ends the borrower gets to KEEP the item belonging to the lender 🤷🏼‍♀️ it wasn’t a gift, it was borrowed for her wedding - a finite loan that had a clear start and end date, it wasn’t to borrow it until she could buy something herself which could drift on and on. If this was a romantic relationship I get how ppl would be on the fence over the returning of an engagement ring or birthday handbag etc - I don’t understand why anyone could possibly imagine just bc a friendship ends they get to keep a high end item like this that was never actually given to them. It is THEFT.

Nobody is saying this is right, but if the OP is no longer around to ask for her air wrap back, then she won’t get it back. Simple.

Petty thieves and scammers don’t function on logic or morals. The CF’s logic is probably something like this:

In the mind of the thieving bride, money is something that just “happens” to people (poor cause and effect reasoning). OP is privileged and selfish for being able to have such an item in the first place. The bride is just as worthy - but she will never be able to get her mitts on a £500 gadget like that because money doesn’t “happen” to her.

OP is just being selfish and precious - and if she’ll throw away the friendship over something as petty as an object and as abstract as money, then she was never a worthy friend in the first place. She doesn’t care about the bride, who is the underdog and the real victim here. OP is causing the bride so much stress and ruining her newlywed period. And so she doesn’t deserve the air wrap back anyway.

The CF has probably logicked multiple scams like this, and may have sold the air wrap to fire-fight a previous scam on someone else. Just kicking the can down the road and robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Langarg · 01/01/2025 21:17

I’m sorry I haven’t posted an update for a while, I’ve had a busy day visiting family.

I haven’t managed to read all the updates but will have a better chance to read them tomorrow. I’ve had a good laugh at some of the comments, also can’t believe the CF who borrowed the hat for the wedding!!! and also that someone genuinely did leave their airwrap in a hotel for it never to be seen again.

It looks like I’ve stirred up quite an interest for airwraps! I did get a bit excited when I seen I had received a private message… I wondered if it could possibly be Dyson themselves reaching out to offer me a new one. Alas, it was a pervert who suggested I need to ‘put my friend over my knee and smack her bottom’!

I didn’t send much of a response to her text message, other than wishing her a happy new year and asking what time her and DH were planning on going to the hotel tomorrow. Will see if she replies!

Good luck 🤞 OP, I hope you have a successful outcome.

"Dear them rozzers, I just wanted to let you know that your decision to arrest me when I was robbing the corner shop last Saturday really took the shine off my weekend.

If you have any sense of kindness or decency, can we please just drop the case, let bygones be bygones and I'll just keep all the stuff what I nicked and we'll leave it there.

It's 2025 now, so I'm sure we can all agree that any naughty deeds that was done in 2024 can now just be safely forgotten and ignored. Otherwise, I'll be sad and I might cry - and it'll all be your nasty horrible fault, you big bullies.

Yours, Trevor the Tea-Leaf"

daisychain01 · 01/01/2025 21:24

I'm not so sure CFs like the "friend" bothers going through the mental gymnastics of justifying their actions to themselves.

more like "mmm I like this airwrap, so it's mine now" - possession being 9 / 10ths of the law and all that!

Ellie56 · 01/01/2025 21:29

There's no way she's going on a 4 hour round trip to the hotel tomorrow...

Joelle84 · 01/01/2025 21:32

Oh yes the journey back to the hotel is tomorrow isnt it. Keep us updated!

daisychain01 · 01/01/2025 21:33

No way, she'll text the OP to say they've had a breakdown and they didn't make it in the end.

Nice grey-rocking in your response!

Definitely contact the hotel first thing tomorrow to check their lost property policy, so she can’t claim they’ve chucked it.

Also the tip to contact police and let them know there was theft at the hotel could scare her into giving it back as there will be CCTV etc. The hotel won’t want to be blamed.
