Starting the new thread ahead of hopefully having an update soon!

I wonder how many Dyson products have been sold since this thread went up?
Even I had a look and I never bother with my hair.

Just to play devils advocate here, a few years ago I genuinely left my much loved Dyson hairdryer in a hotel - I had squirrelled it away into a cupboard and forgot about it when packing to go home. When I contacted the hotel despite me being able to tell them exactly where it was they were unable to find it, so it was clearly either stolen by staff or the next guests. I was gutted! But just to demonstrate that it is possibly to stupidly leave an extremely expensive item behind and for it to go missing.

(However, your friend should definitely replace your Airwrap with a full priced version - I would have done had my dyson hairdryer belonged to a friend)

Edited

See I think it's feasible that the airwrap was left behind, spotted and squirrelled away before anyone else noticed. The Dyson Airwrap has been a popular luxury purchase I gather. It's a notable item. Someone may well have taken it.

But that doesn't excuse the lame offer of second hand in installments (what? fuck off) and/or the emotional manipulation used to avoid replacing it.
In the friend's position I'd be sick at £400+ to put it right...but I'd still do it. With apologies.

She pointed out that in order to buy new she would have to go into debt. She's already in debt...to the OP. Whether she likes it or not, she has to honour it.

Mrswhatsit40 · 01/01/2025 16:35

I would be demanding to see the wedding certificate lol!

What a cheeky, selfish cow. I can never understand people like this - literally don’t know one person in my whole family/friendship group who would act like this. Even my most penniless friend would be mortified and go into debt to buy a new one.

I don’t think you’ll get it back unfortunately op - she sounds shameless.

Morning all

I received an incoherent text message from my friend at about 3.15am (clearly drunk) rambling on about how she valued our friendship so much but couldn’t help but feel this whole situation had taken the shine off her wedding! The absolute cheek of it! She went on to say she will sort this out and hopes it can be ‘left in 2024’

I have a feeling she’s read here and is trying to make me feel guilty. Why else would she say it’s taken the shine off the wedding other than to try and make me feel bad?! Or have I become cynical?

If she’s reading here she knows she’s a rumbled CF and needs to replace it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/01/2025 16:40

There are some excellent messages suggested on here. I hope you get a satisfactory solution, @Langarg - but I’m not holding my breath.

pictoosh · 01/01/2025 16:41

Must admit I ended up googling the airwrap and reading up the reviews and whatnot...idle curiosity.
I don't want one...I'm dead lazy on the beauty front and wouldn't bother with it. However, it is the OP's loved item and cost a lot. It's a slap in the dish to have it weeched away in this manner.
I liken it to lending someone one of my tents which I never would and being told I spoiled someone's holiday by asking for it back.

She took the gloves off first.

Was it the Dyson Airwrap she married?
To have and to hold from this day forth?

DuckDuckG00se · 01/01/2025 15:16

While the 'friend' is clearly out of order, I'm surprised the number of people who think she's stolen it. Not noticing a blue item on a blue carpet and walking off without it, then not realising for a while is exactly the sort of thing I would do.

How she's dealt with it is another matter!

It's because of how she's reacted. Yes anyone can forget/lose something, but a normal, honest person would be mortified and make arrangements to replace it.

Because she hasn't done this, she's not someone with good character.

You said you think she's on MN and your other thread was in the email of top stories, so she might well have read it.

Ready for tomorrow's update.....

healthybychristmas · 01/01/2025 16:47

She's the one who took the shine off her own wedding with her skanky behaviour.

AngelicKaty · 01/01/2025 16:52

chickenlettuceunderbacon · 01/01/2025 16:17

I don't understand why some are suggesting a shopping trip to replace the item where the OP takes the friend out for lunch as a thank you. OP owes the friend nothing, she's not the one who has stolen something, abused and disrespected the friendship.

Absolutely. How anyone can think buying lunch for the cheeky fuckwit as a "thank you" for FINALLY doing the right thing (assuming CF ever does replace the lost AW) beggars belief! It seems their moral compass is as damaged as the CF's. 🙄

BIossomtoes · 01/01/2025 16:56

It seems their moral compass is as damaged as the CF's.

Or maybe they’re just pragmatic and see it as the means to an end. I certainly would, it would give me huge pleasure to pay for her sandwich and tell her it was a parting gift and she was never going to see me again.

Scirocco · 01/01/2025 17:00

Bambooozle · 01/01/2025 16:11

I think this sounds like a nice resolution.

It's a difficult one as I wouldn't want to put a friend into credit card debt for such an unnecessarily expensive item, but then again I would be ultra careful borrowing something like that. Or not do it. Usually though, with something so high value it would be more a case of an insurance claim and paying a small excess than finding £500 right after Christmas.

It's not 'unnecessarily expensive'. It's a really good quality hair drying and styling tool, that was within the OP's price bracket as a nice thing that brings her some enjoyment to use. If the 'friend' couldn't afford to replace it in the event of loss, she should have either not borrowed it at all or taken exceptional care of it. Given the circumstances here, the likeliest explanation is that the 'friend' has stolen it and is lying to the OP.

Agree And also what the fuck has the price or the item got to do with anything! OP is free to spend her money on whatever she wants.

It could have been a £1000 hairclip and the fact of the matter is she borrowed/stole an item that didn't belong to her and she has to replace it.

It's not what happend it's the attitude. Amazes me.

CoraPirbright · 01/01/2025 17:11

I don’t thing the CF has taken it maliciously in order to sell it on - she doesn’t sound organised enough for that!

I knew someone once like this - lent her an item, she then lent it to her friend! After chasing a hell of a long time, I finally got it back, broken and unusable and the original borrower was non-plussed that I was so fucked off. Some people are like this - they dont really grasp that other people put value in things and are too flakey, stupid and entitled to really care that they will upset other people by their misuse and don’t-care attitude.

Equally, some hotels are utter shite at lost property. Last year I left my toothbrush behind in a hotel (one of those smart ones, £150 with Boots points) and I had to give up in the end. First receptionist I managed to get hold of said they would look, second one said they knew nothing about it, third one said they had found it and would post it. Then the voicemail was full and not accepting new messages. I couldnt get thorough anymore, frankly I lost the will to live and gave up.

In the manner of the missing glasses thread, I think you should get some mutual friends to stage an ambush and go in and find your air-wrap. I bet you a pound to a penny that they will find it in her bedroom!!

thinktwice36 · 01/01/2025 17:24

JimHalpertsWife · 01/01/2025 09:50

Maybe just reply "I expect this will all be resolved by the end of the day tomorrow- either the hotel has it or you send me rhe funds to replace it, so thankfully it's not dragging into 2025 too much. Speak tomorrow"

Then I'd probs turn up at her house tomorrow after she "gets back" from the hotel.

Yep,👏

givemesteel · 01/01/2025 17:31

Maybe the friend has seen the thread and thinks Dyson will donate her one or that mumsnet will crowdfund one for OP?

FunkyMonks · 01/01/2025 17:32

Ahh op she's not a friend no true friend would ever do that, I certainly wouldn't have the neck to ask to borrow a friends Dyson airwrap that's £400-£500 and then not return it back immediately with a bunch of flowers and chocs as a thank you.

I agree with other pp she's either hoped to keep it and thought you wouldn't notice or she's broken it and trying to cover her tracks.

Be careful she doesn't buy you a fake one off eBay or some other site selling fakes.

It's also bloody cheeky her offering to buy £150
One that is older model than one she's lost she should be replacing it like for like.

I hope you manage to get it replaced soon Op, I've just bought myself one from Dyson not brand new a refurb one as I didn't want to invest too much in case I don't get on with it, hoping I do though.

Give original AW back
Keep original AW and buy op a new one.

Maybe she shouldn't have tried scamming a £500 hair dryer off you then?

LAMPS1 · 01/01/2025 17:46

Your bonus has paid for her marriage ceremony and admin etc. and a nice meal perhaps.
Or maybe she can’t face the fact that her husband is dishonest.

Tell her you want the equivalent in cash for a brand new one. Don’t trust her to buy it for you. It will never arrive.
Her instruction for you to buy a second hand, lower grade one as a replacement, is an insult and tells you everything you need to know about her.

Let her know asap that you aren’t interested in her nonsensical, spun-out stories of visiting the hotel tomorrow.
Tell her you want the cash or a bank transfer by Friday or you will take her to court.
She has no shame.
