Last Christmas I bought relative shower gel. Quite fancy but not amazingly so. This year I recieved the same shower gel back. Aibu to give it back to them for their birthday in April? I don't like it.

Ooh was it Molton Brown @solopanda? Tempting to give it back to the same person but maybe you should just stop gifting with that person from now on. I brought a load of unused toiletries to the Foodbank collection trolley at Tesco the other day and it does feel really good just to have it all gone!

No it was Rituals

Foaming shower gel? Must be a Rituals one?
They are all nice!

Yeah that's the stuff.

This relative…. any backstory between two of you? You’re not… close , are you?

We're close! No backstory other than the many many years of our life lived together!!!!

You really don’t want to answer this do you?!

Which is the answer in itself 😆

ah ok

so why on earth are you thinking about doing this not in a jokey way but as a barbed pass aggressive kind of present?

I wasn't thinking of doing it as a barbed passive aggressive thing!

returning the gift back to her is surely either a funny injoke or passive aggressive

what else could it be?

Inbetweenie993 · 01/01/2025 17:37

Not just unreasonable but unnecessarily mean. There's enough trouble out there without petty unkindness over a flipping shower gel. Get her something she might like. Be the bigger person!

Sennelier1 · 01/01/2025 17:47

I could be a silly coïncidence. I think regifting it would be a bit childish, no? Just donate the shower-gel and buy something completely different next time.

Do it. Do it forever 😁

Mmm-hmm. Do this.

Gameofmoans81 · 01/01/2025 17:59

I can’t believe someone would keep a bottle of shower gel for a year to give it back! How bad could it be?? I’d just be using it regardless even it wasn’t my favourite smell

Violetparis · 01/01/2025 18:03

Don't be petty, agree to stop buying each other gifts instead.

HappyMe6 · 01/01/2025 18:09

Omg🤣🤣🤣🤣

When my BIL got married the first time, we gave him and his wife a sensible, requested gift. But we also left a couple of really naff presents on the table, with random names on the gift tag. One of the gifts was an electric tie rack. It was genuinely crap.

We were aware that BIL had asked his parents if they knew a "Archie and Ethel" so they were obviously trying to work out who these gifts were from. BIL eventually worked out it was from DH and the electric tie rack was passed back and forth between them for a number of years, but not always as a gift. It might just reappear at the back of a kitchen cupboard or under a table after they had visited one another. As they didn't see each other that often, it went on for a number of years. Either one of them go bored and didn't pass it back again or it's lurking somewhere in a dusty corner, never found.

TheTavern · 01/01/2025 18:50

I suspect that a lot of toiletries are re-gifted. I don’t know why someone would give toiletries unless the recipient has said they particularly liked a certain brand like ‘Cowshed’, for example. I think the shelf life is 2-3 years but I wouldn’t return it. You have to rise above her meanness (if that is what it was).

I knew it was rituals , I don't know why they wouldn't like it unless the scent was one they don't use . I love their shower gels .

If she likes it and it's a new one then she will obviously like the smell

Exactly the same bottle?
They obviously didn't like it either.
Give it to a food bank.

C'mon - they've just GOT to keep regifting it to see how many hits they can get before anyone else notices......

Fuck a duck.

April is 4 months away and you're sitting there wondering if you should give them shower gel?

I know the TV's shite but come on! 🤣🤣

We should all be more like this, but if you want to give them it back it should just be a joke, so with another present as well.

Don't do this. Don't follow any of the advice you have been given, except mine. Gift it back and forth forever and never mention anything to anyone or each other.

My brothers did this with a boardgame. They also gifted it back and forth at birthdays.

Saw one from that brand in their bathroom and a reed diffuser

Edited

Perhaps it had been languishing in the shower unused for months

Groundhog Day for shower gel.

See who breaks first.

Panfish · 16/04/2025 07:49

OP!!! Did you regift the shower gel to your friend that you have spent 4 months stewing about?! 😂
