Last Christmas I bought relative shower gel. Quite fancy but not amazingly so. This year I recieved the same shower gel back. Aibu to give it back to them for their birthday in April? I don't like it.

There are worse things to be given. I have relatives who give things as gifts that they have stolen from work and occasionally things they found on the street.

JMSA · 31/12/2024 20:03

Shower gel is a pretty shit gift. Unless it's a L'Occitane one or similar that they've specifically asked for.
I'd donate it to charity and be done with it. Giving it back is pure pettiness.

April???

bloody hell. I missed that. Depressing

RandomMess · 31/12/2024 20:04

@Needmorelego this was started in the 90s

It's a family joke with good humour.

Nothatgingerpirate · 31/12/2024 20:06

I don't know....
Don't bother with the relative.

My sisters-in-law have been exchanging a single bar of soap between each other for around 40 years!!

hobbledyhoy · 31/12/2024 20:10

As others have said, never discuss or allude to it in any way shape or form but keep gifting it back and forth across Xmas and birthdays just to see how long it continues.

Do it. Do it forever 😁

Don't do this. Don't follow any of the advice you have been given, except mine. Gift it back and forth forever and never mention anything to anyone or each other.

Hahaha

Thank the gifter for the gift and explain to the gifter that it made your skin itch. Don't put a pre-used item into a food bank.
Next year, perhaps make sure that each of you have a list of small gifts that you would like?

Who said it was used?

Maybe I missed that bit.

I don't think it's been used?

so you bought them a shower gel that they already had half used in their shower? was it a special brand?

It’s hard to pick which of your posts is the most bonkers, but I’ll go with this one for now.

Is it really that weird to buy someone a product you know they use? So she had a half-used bottle in the shower - surely that just means she’s halfway through that bottle, rather than being a sign she used half of it and then decided she hated it? Shower gel is something people tend to replace when they’ve run out. I can understand why you’d think it was weird to buy someone the same top or ornament they already had, but it’s pretty common to keep on buying shower gel again and again.

AvidBee · 31/12/2024 20:28

I'm another one for just endlessly giving it back and forth between you both.

Maybe they assumed you liked it?

It's like L'Occitane and I saw the brand in their shower - they had one of those stick things too.
