To want to take down Christmas decorations on 31stDec

We’ve had tree and Christmas decorations up since early December. I’m so ready to take them down now and get the house back to normal, but DH says it’s way too early and how could I think that was usual. Out of interest, do you keep your tree etc until 6 January?

Down on 28th here. We have a birthday on 29th and preference is for it not to be Christmassy then. All fresh and spacious for bringing in the new year.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 31/12/2024 17:15

Mine came down yesterday and the living room has had a good clean today. I fully expect to get "twelfth night" flung at me but as far as I go Christmas and all that goes with it is for December, not January.

wastingtimeonhere · 31/12/2024 17:48

I don't get it. If those who love Christmas so much, the decorations go up Oct/Nov, surely they would want it to last. Yet I see on SM them coming down ASAP after the actual day, in some cases Boxing Day. We then get the inevitable 'number' of weekends on SM until the next one...
We put our up the weekend before Christmas and take down around the 4/5th of January.. January is bleak and dark enough. Surely we could do with it being the other way.

It is just back to normal though after tonight. I like to start the new year all fresh and clean. I don't want the faff of taking the decs down hanging over me. My decs go up weekend closest to the 1st. Never in October

We love Christmas (and decorations don’t go up until mid December) but it’s over now. Time to celebrate tonight and then look forward to the New Year.

Zanatdy · 31/12/2024 18:15

I am going to take mine down tomorrow I think. Need to do some cleaning so makes sense.

SharonEllis · 31/12/2024 18:16

Ours stay up to the 6th and don't go up till a week before Christmas.

Crunchymum · 31/12/2024 18:17

Ours stay up. It's always nice to have everything festive for NYE. I'll undress the trees / put all the candles and ornaments away from tomorrow onwards but the lights stay on the trees until DP isn't working as that's his job (as is disposing of the tree) We are usually all un-christmassd by the time the kids go back to school though - properly cleaned and decluttered.

Evenstar · 31/12/2024 18:22

Normally 5th or 6th for me, but we don’t put them up till about a week before Christmas. We are getting ours down on Saturday this year as we have decorators starting on the 6th.

cleanasawhistle · 31/12/2024 18:24

Our tree went up quite late and it was all taken down today at 5pm when our visitors left early.
So thats the end of Xmas,

Sunnnybunny72 · 31/12/2024 18:36

Mine are coming down tomorrow. The tree only will stay up for the darts final on Friday and then that's coming down on Saturday.

Sacredhandbag · 31/12/2024 18:44

Christmas is a December event for me. I don't like it in November or January.
Mine goes up the first weekend day in December, which this year happened to be 1st. It came down today and we had a big tidy up, clear out and organise of all our new Christmas presents. It doesn't need to be a sad event. We enjoyed getting ready for the year ahead and looking forward to the fresh start. All our decorations are special and hold memories and many of them are family heirlooms so we lovingly pack them away and thank them for the joy they've given us for yet another year. It's not just a case of ripping it down and hauling it into the loft.
Besides, my church keeps their tree up until Candlemas on 2nd February so I can still enjoy a little festivity for a little while longer if I really want to.

Letterasaurus · 31/12/2024 19:03

Always the 6th. Earlier would feel very odd. They're so lovely I want them up as long as possible, quite apart from observing the same tradition as when I was a child.

tinytemper66 · 31/12/2024 19:03

I am taking mine down tomorrow as we are going away for a few days. Don't want to come back and do it on Monday when I have finished work.

We do that too. The decorations have only been up for ten days, it’s hardly worth putting them up at all if they come down before the 6th.

DramaAlpaca · 31/12/2024 19:15

Our tree goes up about a week before Christmas and it'll come down on Sunday 5th January this year. I might leave a few fairy lights up for a bit longer.

socks1107 · 31/12/2024 19:17

Mine came down on Sunday. I usually wait till new year but I've worked all this Xmas and just wanted my house tidy again!

lavenderlou · 31/12/2024 21:01

Went for a NYE walk this evening and it was nice to see so many lights still up. The time between Christmas and New Year is my favourite.

Funkyslippers · 31/12/2024 22:10

Well dd is on call to her boyfriend & OH is doing something useful in the garage so I've taken down all the decs as there's bugger all on the TV. Earliest we've ever taken them down

MeinKraft · 31/12/2024 22:20

I was stressing myself out worrying about whether to take the tree down or not and eventually just took it down yesterday. i still have a few decorations up but i was glad to say goodbye to the tree. i don’t really care about the 12 days of Christmas and i don’t want to celebrate it for 12 days. It’s not 1724.

Sacredhandbag · 31/12/2024 23:45

Isn't it funny how some people are like "THERE ARE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS!! YOU MUST NOT TAKE YOUR TREE DOWN BEFORE 6TH JANUARY OR YOU ARE A MISERABLE OLD SCROOGE WHO HATES CHRISTMAS"

but they're not like "THERE ARE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS! THREE BANK HOLIDAYS ARE NOT ENOUGH! THEY SHOULD ALL BE BANK HOLIDAYS SO WE CAN ALL SPEND MORE TIME RESTING AND WITH OUR FAMILIES!!"

Come on people, if you're going to care that much about pretty much archaic Christmas traditions, at least care where it matters 😄

user2848502016 · 01/01/2025 00:13

Mine are going to be up until the 4th (busy 5th then back in work 6th)
I don't put them up until mid December.
Personally don't like the trend of putting them up super early then down straight after Christmas.

Everyone says this, that people only take them down early because they had them up early, but i put mine up in the middle of December and took it down yesterday 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah, it's mainly to do with that. I keep my tree and decorations up until the 6th but I work from home and can organise my schedule in a way that means I don't do a huge amount of work through school holidays. So it's genuinely still Christmas in my house. We still do small festive things each day, culminating in a lowkey but significant twelfthnight celebration. It feels right for my decorations to stay up until then.

But If I was back in work on Thursday, (which is a pretty good holiday most people don't get) or if I had already gone back to work on the 26th/27th, I'd be miserable with the decorations still up. And I'd have them back down a lot earlier.

NeedWineNow · 01/01/2025 02:20

We’ve just got back in from a New Year party and it’s nice to see our decorations and lights. We’ll probably start to take some down tomorrow and finish by the weekend. I’m ready to have a good clean up now.
