Should she replace it?

Langarg · 30/12/2024 16:57

My friend asked if she could borrow my Dyson airwrap for her wedding as money was tight and she couldn’t afford a hairdresser. It was a small wedding with only her, her DH and two witnesses. I reluctantly agreed (bit of a people pleaser).

The wedding was two weeks ago, we exchanged a few messages back and forth the day after her wedding. A few days later I asked if she could please return my airwrap and she didn’t reply. I messaged again saying I really need it back as I don’t have a hair dryer anymore and solely use this to dry/style my hair and she eventually replied saying she accidentally left it in the hotel however the hotel are claiming it wasn’t left there.

She was very apologetic however didn’t offer to replace it or give me the money for it. I raised this with her and explained that I shouldn’t be left without my airwrap or out of pocket for her mistake and she said that she couldn’t afford to replace or give me the money for it. She then sent me a link to a post on Facebook marketplace of someone selling an older model for £150 and said that if I buy that she can pay me back in 3 monthly instalments.

I don’t want to accept this because firstly why should I be out of pocket £150 and risk not being paid back and I don’t want an older model when I had the newer one which cost me nearly £500 less than a year ago.

I explained this to her and she said she is going to be forced to put a brand new one on her credit card which will put her in to debt. I feel awful but I really don’t know what to do?!

Please give me some advice…

YABU = buy the £150 older model and hope she pays the 3 monthly instalments
YANBU = accept her offer of her buying a replacement on her credit card

If she is used to taking advantage of you she probably liked it so much she just kept it, and assumed you’d be such a doormat and feel sorry for her you’d not ask her to replace it.

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

Gosh, so defensive… I really do think she has hung onto it for Christmas and NYE. She will be out, smashed, then hungover on the 1st (why she can’t “go to the hotel” until the 2nd) and then will return the air wrap on the 2nd.

I’d be tempted to turn up to her house unannounced with a box of chocolates, with the tone of - let’s not let an airwrap derail our friendship. Invite yourself in. When you get a chance go to the “loo” but go via her bedroom and have a look to see if you can see the airwrap.

I said this exact sane thing earlier in the thread! She should so do this!

Brightanddrywithsunnyspells · 31/12/2024 13:00

The friendship is over. Take her to the small claims court if she doesn't replace with a replica of your lost one.

OVienna · 31/12/2024 13:11

If she had really lost lost it, she'd have been going mad trying to figure out a solution.

Well, if she's a selfish CF maybe not.

But it's very shady that the hotel didn't know anything about it.

I too think it will magically reappear but I wouldn't hesitate to go down the small claims route if it doesn't.

Please OP take a screen shot of her messages though so you can prove she's acknowledged she had yours and lost it!

Of course theft happens in hotels, but if that had happened in this case, why wouldn't OP's so-called friend have been straight on to her to tell her what happened as soon as she got back from the hotel? Several days elapsed after the wedding and OP had to ask for her AirWrap back and then her "friend" started stone-walling her. Her appalling behaviour indicates no theft was involved.

And making a claim against the hotel too, if she thought it had been stolen.

This post has reminded me of The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant…

I read that story. Ouch.

Definitelynotagladiator · 31/12/2024 13:20

Go to her house and get it! It’s definitely there! And has PP said she’s holding onto it for New Years!

FizzyBisto · 31/12/2024 13:24

A lot of people seem to quite merrily blame hotel staff for thefts. Like with people in all jobs, I'm sure there must be some dishonest hotel workers; but it would be amazingly obvious that the finger of suspicion would fall on them, if they did steal something they found left in the room.

Livingtothefull · 31/12/2024 13:26

I am sure she kept it - or sold it. She probably hoped she could fob you off with a cheap version to retain her profit margin, and that you would be mug enough to accept this. I am so glad you aren't.

Make sure you retain any emails/texts from her in case you need them as evidence to make a compensation claim against her via the small claims court, if she fails either to return your property or reimburse the full value (which you absolutely should).

I do hope you end the friendship. People like these do not deserve to have decent and generous friends.

SockFluffInTheBath · 31/12/2024 13:27

Is her hair still looking airwrap-ed in her recent social media?

noidea69 · 31/12/2024 13:42

not sure if some else has said this, but the second you tell her to buy you a brand new one, she will miraculously get a call from the hotel saying they found the original one.

Omg yes! I'd love to read that thread now.

Does anyone remember what happened in the end with that thread? Did she get her glasses back?

Yes she did! She didn’t give much detail but another friend got them back I think.

Ohnobackagain · 31/12/2024 13:50

Her problem @Langarg she needs to replace woth a new one and suck up the management of the credit card payment. Such is life, unless she can claim off her travel insurance (doubtful).

Also, sounds like a pack of lies to me; even more reason to insist on a replacement.

Stirabout · 31/12/2024 13:53

Have you checked the hotels website.
Are the carpets exactly the same colour……I can’t believe I even take that comment seriously tbh OP 🤣🤣

Indeed. She is so lazy and lacking in respect for the OP that she couldn't even be bothered to come up with a convincing lie for why she failed to return the OP's property. I am quite sure she has kept it and thought the OP could be fobbed off with this story.

She needs to put it on her credit card if she is really as hard up as she claims. And if so the OP shouldn't be made to feel even the tiniest bit guilty.

jackstini · 31/12/2024 14:05

I'm dying to see if she posts NYE pics on social and her hair has obviously been airwrap styled..!

Schleep · 31/12/2024 14:09

This is totally irrelevant and absolutely not a diss on the airwrap but for all you folk who want one but can't drop £500 on it - get yourselves a Babyliss Flawless Volume Roller Dryer. They're £30 and an absolute game changer.
Genuinely as good as an airwrap in my experience <3

OP absolutely should be getting her airwrap replaced though!

Yes and take a large handbag with her. Sneak into the room, steal the Dyson back and walk out like nothing happened and say nothing 😂

The friend can hardly say 'you went into my room and stole my Dyson that I stole from you' haha.

'She won't be getting a £500 appliance replaced.'

If she is determined enough - through legal action if necessary - she probably will. The OP just needs to hang onto those email/text exchanges as evidence.
