Double ear piercing - fine at 13?

YouBelongWithMe · 30/12/2024 11:24

Our youngest wants to get second piercings in her lobes. She's paying for it herself and she knows from the first lot what the aftercare involves. It's at a very reputable piercing establishment which uses needles not guns.

My mum says it's grossly irresponsible to let a 13yr old double pierce her ears. I'm of the opinion that it's not such a big deal, many have them, they can close up if she changes her mind.

AIBU to be so casual about second ear piercings?

Our 13 yo has double piercing and a helix.

I wasn’t a fan, but she would have done it herself (I did my 4ths when I was 14).

As long as she’s not going to get into trouble at school (ie 1sts are healed long enough so she can just wear the 2nds) I can’t see the harm.

DogOfFido · 30/12/2024 11:26

I agree with you. My DD had them done at 13 and looked after them perfectly well and it isn’t really a big deal in the scheme of things. She is only allowed to wear one set to school and she follows that rule happily.

SemperIdem · 30/12/2024 11:29

It’s fine, it’s just ear piercings. Ear “stacks” have been popular for a while now.

More to the point, teens with multiple ear piercings has been pretty commonplace for well over 20 years!

longestlurkerever · 30/12/2024 11:30

I can't really think of a reason to allow a first and object to a second

BobbyBiscuits · 30/12/2024 11:31

I'm pretty sure a had several in each ear at 13.id say it's fine. Looks cute too x

InkHeart2024 · 30/12/2024 11:33

I can't imagine why this would be a problem for anyone.

AuntieStella · 30/12/2024 11:34

I think two holes per lobe is very ordinary for a teen, and would allow it.

But what are her schools rules on earrings and PE?

DD was 14 when she got her second set, and I made her wait until after her last PE lesson before the summer holidays so she didn't have to disturb them at all for 6+ weeks

Mrburnshound · 30/12/2024 11:34

Double piercing is no different from single piercing, back in the 90s a stud in one and small hoop in the other was very fashionable

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/12/2024 11:35

Can’t abide earrings on babies and toddlers because they have no choice.
13 year olds know their own mind
Is your mum ok with the single piercings? If so, what difference do two more make?

HoppingPavlova · 30/12/2024 11:40

Why not?

oakleaffy · 30/12/2024 11:40

Multiple ear piercings have been around since late 1980’s./1990’s
I don’t wear earrings any more, the holes are tiny.

edwinbear · 30/12/2024 11:41

My 13 year old has two. I wasn’t thrilled about the second set but many of her friends have more than that so I let it slide. She looked after them well and no problems with infections etc. I’ve told her that’s the last piercings she’s having until she’s much older - and absolutely, categorically not having her tummy button pieced which she’s been nagging about over Christmas!

TimeForTeaAndG · 30/12/2024 11:41

It's not up to your mum, though.

Zae134 · 30/12/2024 11:43

My DD11 has her firsts done, I've said she can have her seconds this summer (so she'll hopefully healed for September). She's looked after them well and she knows what she wants, so I think it's fine.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 30/12/2024 11:45

Dts had their seconds done at 12, really can't see the big deal.

MonopolyQueen · 30/12/2024 11:45

Sure, why not? It’s hardly unusual and if she changes her mind later she can just ignore the hole.

Old people are supposed to object to things like this so ignore your dm

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 30/12/2024 11:46

DD got her first set at 10, her second at 12.

Tinytigertail · 30/12/2024 11:47

It's absolutely fine, she can always take them out later if she changes her mind.

Rosecoffeecup · 30/12/2024 11:47

I'm in my mid 30s and we all had our second done when we are 13 or 14. Totally not a big deal.

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 30/12/2024 12:03

I was 10 when I had mine done, my Nan took me and got hers done as well! It's not like she wants her nipples pierced

Whattochoose1 · 30/12/2024 12:03

I remember my Mother having a fit when she realised I'd had a second hole put in my ears...
Until I politely explained it was actually a third one and I'd had the others done a couple of years earlier when I was 13, she'd just not noticed 😂

Chillilounger · 30/12/2024 12:11

I would be visiting comfortable with this if she looks after the first holes fine. My DD wants two but has said she wants to wait until she's finished school for the second which is entirely her choice.

LostTheMarble · 30/12/2024 12:18

She is old enough to decide, is paying herself and is being extremely sensible (more than many parents with babies/toddlers) in going to professionals and not some teen with a stapler. Cannot see one reason why she shouldn’t.

liveforsummer · 30/12/2024 13:21

No idea why she'd be ok with the first but not the second. No difference really!

Shoes232 · 30/12/2024 13:33

Not an issue, I got my belly button pierced at 13 but my mum wouldn’t let me get a second ear lobe piercing 😂
